I have this two young Brahea sp that were planted a year ago on the lowest and coldest part of the garden. One of them ( labeled Brahea aculeata) has some damaged leaflets with the light frosts we had here. According the nearby weather station ( +- 1 km from here) it was + 0.58 at 6:00 h and reached -0.48⁰ at 8:00 h. I was surprised by the differences in leaf hardiness of both species. The palm labeled Brahea elegans was intact.

Young Needle Palm Hardiness 1 2

I planted 5 young needle palms along the west side of my driveway, which faces north. While I understand that an open spot for the Northwest winds to blow is bad for palms, I figured that Rhapidophyllum hystrix is the hardiest palm and it should be able to handle it. The only problem is that my needles are young; they are about a foot tall and only two of them are producing mature fan-shaped leaves. I live on Long Island, NY which is USDA Zone 7a. Although the 2016 winter was rather mild it did get down to 0° F once in February. How hardy are needle palms while they are young and how much should I protect them come next winter?

Young Sabal Mexicana

Hi everyone, Today I've planted a texas sabal mexicana in the front yard. According to the internet they're very slow growing . Since this little fellow isn't growing in the wild would the growth rate be faster? Don't really want to wait 10 to 15 years for the trunk to be visible but if that's the case I'll planted it in the wild.

Young Sabal palmetto - Central VA

Here is my young Sabal palmetto in central Virginia, I germinated this in 2019/2020 from seed I collected in Virginia Beach and planted it last spring. It’s doing pretty well and survived the winter with some damage, I did not protect it. I put it against the house to try to give it some more winter heat.

So I am going to be planting a young Sabal Palmetto at a place in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b. Some of you may have seen it in other posts but it is quite small. I dug it up from the woods, so I will be planting it if it survives. I will be adding little to no protection to it. What do you think?

Have a quick question on a newly planted Waggie Palm. Three weeks ago planted a field grown, 7' , b&b Waggie. It had some minor scale that I have treated with oil and a systemic and looks to be recovering nicely. It was watered daily for the first week and now I'm watering 2x per week. The bottom row of fronds is looking a bit yellow, but I was warned that this might be shock from digging, transporting and planting. My question is should I start fertilizing now or wait? On my Windmill and Pindo I use Jobes Organics. Is this a good product? Many thanks for your help.

Your favorite palm of 2021 1 2

That you own, of course. And add a pic! It's January so we can still do these yearly reviews. My favorite pam for 2021 was the Phoenix Canariensis. What determined favorability in 2021 was strongly influenced by how Palms recovered during our winter event (aka Palmageddon) here in Central Texas. This palm was completely defoliated (I cut it to a single spear) and protected by several layers of fleece blankets and frost cloth. What you see in the picture is a full blown recovery explosion. I got the palm in Jan/Feb of 2020 from one of those Houston Garden Centers along the highway for a discounted price. It was in a 5 Gallon pot with a trunk diameter of 5 inches.…

Just to offer a little encouragement to any newer Zone 7 cold hardy palm enthusiasts…there is hope for a bit of variety in our zone… First…Needle Palm…planted in 2014…protection free in my yard anyway, little to no winter damage. The trunk is about 13” (16 oz. can for scale) cleaned it up for this post and was surprised myself at the trunk. Can’t recommend this palm enough. It has several trunks but this one presents itself right off the deck which makes it good…so is the beer: Next up…the Brazoria…little protection if any…have patience and you can get good results…the trunk is about 12” and it gets fatter every year. It’s a rough looking trunk but any tru…

Z6 Sabal minors and Needle palm

Hey All, Wanted to provide an update on where mine landed. Our low last winter was 9F and the last true Z6 winters were 2014/15. I looked at some 10 year data and it does seem we get at least 1-2 weeks a year below freezing. I protected the Yucca rostrata the first year and it flew through. Thinking I should do the same with these? I did burlap wrapped around yard stakes with a clear painters tarp on top (thinking it would get some mild greenhouse effect that way but still be breathable). The minors all get full sun and the needle gets maybe 2 hours of evening sun (north facing). Please share any tips you have or opinions on care this summer and protect…

Good Evening all, Im new here and just would like some feedback on everyones experiences with this species. I have 3 specimens, all purchased from LOWES in the blue pots (you know the ones). 1 is about 2 yrs old (meaning I've had it for 2 years). Last winter I kept it inside in a roughly 10 gallon pot. Over the last year it has grown well, albeit slowly. The other two I purchased around april this year and are smaller. After relandscaping my entire property I decided to plant all of these in select locations. I am in Calera, Alabama, zone 8a I believe. They are all planted in a south facing back yard, and get 8+ hrs o…

Some recoveries some failures, too many to mention. But here are some pictures. Austin had 25 earlier this month. A fair amount of damage. 10 maybe 12F last February. Very warm spot south of the Skyline of Austin. I have grown to love their hardy cycad collection.

Zone 3b

ok so not this summer, but next summer I am going to be preparing both a bulgarian Trachy and R.Hystrix. Extensively researching, I found a testimony from someone in North Dakota (zone 4 with sometimes 3b weather) who successfully winters his R.Hystrix, albeit with many many steps and layers of protection for both the trunk and the surrounding ground (which freezes here in Saskatchewan very very deep). His palm is now 6 years old and had some good warmer winters to harden itself, which was lucky for him. We rarely see that winter on the warmer side up here in 3b. This may be completely futile, but I wanted the challenge, which is why i will only be doing one of ea…

Zone 5 unboxing

Zone 5 south of Montreal, finally temps are mild enough to unbox the needle/minor. Windmill will wait until next weekend. The needle palm was unphased by cold temps, even the offsets are green and flawless. Sabal minor first winter, two fronds are shrivelled....that thing is a trooper. Random pictures, spear pull on the tiny saw palmetto, I was sorta expecting it....

Zone 6b advice needed

Hello all. I am new to the forums here and I am glad to find a community of other palm enthusiasts;) I live outside Wichita, Kansas, in zone 6B, but very close to the line with zone 7A. I bought a Trachy that is about four feet tall (pictured below, currently awaiting planting). I am also wanting to experiment with some Sabal minor and maybe a Pindo. I am wondering if anybody could give me some tips on keeping the Trachy alive. My house is in the northeast corner of a field, with a windbreak of trees on the north and a wooded area to the east. There is about 100 feet between the house and these trees on the north and east. Winters in our area are often cold, and it i…

My garden is outside of city heat island, about 30 km to the east from Zagreb at weekend house in rural area and the garden is one or two degrees Celsius colder than the city. There are not many palm species but few thrive and some strugle from year to year. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=waO7VjkjvN8 Trachycarpus princeps, geminisectus, ukhrulensis, princeps hybrid/new form, ‘Nova’ and all Chamaerops are pasive protected with heavy mulching with pine straws and for some species with some cover against snow and rain during winter. Same garden under snow two winters ago https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WCB5NSxBpLo Here are included pictures from previus win…

Zone 7 Update

Good morning! Don’t want to be boring on such a beautiful day but wanted to update on my zone 7 palms here in Northern Virginia. So far, no long, oppressive stretches of heat, somewhat cool nights, beneficial rains…not your typical NOVA experience… Named it Sasquatch…it’s trunk is about 9 feet tall now and that furry top 2 feet reminds me of a Sasquatch head. I do think it’s genetically engineered for the winter cold. It’s been a great palm. Sunny, wetter Needle… Shady, drier Needle… Brazoria really busting out and I’ll have seeds for the first time in 8 years or so…will definitely sprout some and share some if the damn sq…

First time I've ever seen these in at Home Depot in East Tennessee. One says a Wodyetia Foxtail. The other pic I took was not labeled. I honestly have no idea. I just guessed perhaps a mule palm. They also had lots of Pygmy Date Palms.

Zone 7a needle spear pull
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

I live in zone 7a (near Olney MD). Last November I had one of two pups in a 15 gallon needle palm, which was planted in April, experience spear pull in November. I did not catch it in time and the pup died. This week I had a 3 gallon needle, still in the pot, experience spear pull. This needle had been moved into an unheated garage whenever the temp dropped below 25F at night. I have treated it with copper fungicide. A couple of squirts into the crown. So am i having just some bad luck, or is spear pull kind of common for needles in colder damp periods of the year? (even though these are clearly the most cold hardy palms). If the latter, is there a course of treat…

Would love to get some insight on confirmed specimens of windmill palms as well as sabal minors and needles in a wet/cold 7b. I have seen some nice examples of protected ones in the area. I believe from pics around here there’s 1 windmill in the Bronx near a house, and 1 in lower manhattan somewhere alongside bamboo that don’t receive protection. Would love to purchase some cold hardy windmill seeds to experiment with from a mature plant in an a colder winter area. Haven’t been able to find any for sale closer sourced than Raleigh, NC.
