What has grown faster than you expected?

What palms have you grown that have proved after than conventional wisdom would have assumed? Probably my most surprising grower has been my little nannorrhops. When I got it in late May, it sat in a hot mailbox too long. So its only two little strap leaves shriveled and died. It quickly started sending out new growth though. It has grown six new leaves in 4 months. That's not crazy, but it is faster than most young palms grow in my experience. End of May: Today:

Hello, I always wanted to live somewhere south, with palm trees. But I ended up in NJ, USA, in zone 6a Anyway, I don't want my location to stop me from having a palm tree. What if I don't plant my palm trees, but keep them in large pots so that I could put them in my 9' garage during cold days/months? This is a list of palms that I'm considering: Common Name Scientific name Dwarf Palmetto Tree Sabal minor Pindo Palm Tree Butia Capitata Windmill Palm Tree Trachycarpus fortunei Needle Palm Tree …

....just curious to know the definition of such a term when all my palms seem to be "cold hardy", but not 'frost hardy"... I zone push alot of z10 palms under oak canopy, so frost doesn't have contact with the palm foliage... Should I start pushin' the envelope with 10b palms? ...carpoxylon. Ken, you wanna donate one fer science? ....or is that just plain ol stuuuupid? - Ray.

What is causing this to happen to Sabal minor

This is a Sabal minor I planted in june. It gets water every day and full sun for 7 hours. I noticed the tips of the fronds were burning up, even on the new growth. Is this overwatering? It gets about 2 gallons a day. Sometimes I skip if there is rain or if I’m not home all day.

What is recommended to ensure cutting tools are sanitized between use on different Palms (especially new arrivals to the garden)? Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol? Hydrogen Peroxide? Diluted Bleach & Water Solution? I currently have a Felco F-2 Classic Manual Hand Pruner for trimming old brown fronds off, if something bigger is needed I have a Corona 10” RazorTooth Folding Pruning Saw and a Fiskers 12’ Pole Saw for my big Washy. edit: I also use a Victorinox 6.7631 3 1/4” Serrated Paring Knife w/ Large Red Handle to cut suckering trunks from smaller and Dwarf Palms with “scalpel-like” precision. Thanks

What is the cold hardiness of Sabal Etonia?
by Dwarf Fan- 8 replies

Every other Palm I have looked up usually brings up a cold hardiness temperature and/or temperature range referenced by multiple Palm related websites, however, the Sabal Etonia seems to not have much cold tolerance info online. What has been the experience of the members here that grow Sabal Etonia?

What is the coldest temp your Trachy's have been able to handle?
by trachycarpus fortunei- 1 follower

This is my first post, however I have been viewing these forums since 2021. What is the coldest temp your Trachy's have been able to handle with minimal protection? I planted 3 Trachycarpus Fortuneis back in March, 2023. Two were a little over a foot tall (Including leaves) and one was about eight inches tall. Their second winter just passed, and they were hit with -3 degrees for about an hour and a few nights that didn't go above freezing (According to my weather app, I did not have a thermometer outside at the time). The palms were only protected with a burlap sack around them, and a few weeks after the cold hit, it wasn't looking to good. One of the palms spear pulled …

Tell us the coldest temperature your Windmill Palm has sustained this winter. How did it react? What kind of winter protection, if any, are you using? Is your Trachy in a sub-group which might be more cold hardy than regular ones?

What is the hardiest palm tree there is?
by ChicagoPalma- 1 follower

In my opinion, I think one of the hardiest palms in this world are Trachycarpus Fortunei, when they get mature, but I'd like to hear some opinions from others, since from what I heard the Filibustas survived the texas freeze of 2021, It they are that hardy, it would survive Chicago winters like it was northern Florida, we only get colder temps in the negatives for a week or two (lowest we got was record breaking -30 F couple years ago) Worst could be around -19 in a normal winter. So I'd like to hear from everyone!

What is the lowest Temperature a Mature Mule Palm Has Survived

Hello, after the February 2021, freeze, there should be enough data out here to determine bxs ultimate hardiness. Mine have all be trunk cut and show no signs of movement after an official low of 5*. I have not given up hope yet. Even Butia that may have lived ( very few) in the area are not moving much of any either last I noticed. But I will check on those after a few more days.

Until recently (the last few years or so), I've decided to try various species that aren't hardy to my zone, or in some cases, select species where there's very limited information on its hardiness. I've had many failures, but a success or two in Laccospadix Australasica and Washingtonia Robusta (so far in 8B and 9A winters). I've now decided to try out the Coccothrinax genus. I've read that the vast majority of them are 9B and up, but I tried to find some that will stay relatively short in stature (just in case I want to protect it during a really bad winter) and one that is a noted 9B hardiness zone rating. This years pick for my experiment is Coccothrinax Hiorami.…

What is the shortest "trunking" Sabal

Can anyone tell me what is the shortest "trunking" Sabal Palm that I can use in zone 8b/9a? I have sabal minor, serenoa repens, etc but I'm looking for a quicker trunking Sabal that stays short. Sabal Bermudana, Palmetto, Riverside, or whatever? A Sabal that will trunk but not grow to skyscraper heights. Thanks.

What is this issue with my Washy .
by WSimpson- 12 replies

It hasn't been below 16F in 3 years , since that 2018 terrible winter here . I lost 2 established Palmettos during that 2018 cold snap , but my protection kept this Washy healthy except for possibly the cracks you see . Are those cracks normal ? I don't think it was cold under my protection but maybe I had some colder spots ? Should I stuff anything inside those cracks like wood putty or something that would seal the cracks ? Thanks , Will I just read this article : https://gardenersyards.com/cracks-in-my-palm-tree-trunk/ I just found this . Zoom in and check out where I restricted that area of the trunk for the better part …

What is this palm's survival chance?

So, a nearby nursery has this Phoenix sylvestris and I was wondering what the chance of survival of this rough looking palm is. The palm has a nice trunk, though a bit crooked. There is a lot of green in the middle of the palm. I personally think that it has potential. I think that if someone took good care, fertilizing and water enough, it would have a chance to look good again. But, I don't know much, what is ya'lls opinion? Also, do you think the trunk would get straight again, if put in good lighting?
