I have a couple of potted Parajubaea in my garden. They have been outside in full sun for the entire growing seaon, starting in March and have been growing fine. All look good exept for one little sunkha which is showing some very weak and unhealthy new growth. I didn't expect this because growth has been healthy untill now. I have seen this kind of weak growth before on some Parajubaeas but only after being placed inside for the winter. So now I'm in the dark about what causes this. I hope somebody can help me solving this.

Weather

This is in the wrong section, but it doesn’t look like the Weather/Climate board gets a lot of attention. Remove if this is against the rules. I was just wondering, for those that live in the SE, how much rain have you accumulated in the past month or two. I don’t know exactly how much we’ve accumulated here in SE Georgia. The climate sites that I know of are limited to the amount of data they collect. I haven’t found a website that collects rainfall data for my city or any cities that are near it. My parents have a 12” rain gauge, and they emptied it at the beginning of July. They say that it overflowed once about two weeks ago, and just in …

Weeping Rhapidophyllum hystrix

This is one of the most stunning Rhapidophyllum hystrix palms I have ever seen. It stood out to me in a sea of Needle Palms from 50 feet away. Most Needle Palms have somewhat stiff leaves, but some are slightly lax. This one had leaves like soft ribbons, and every single leaf was like that. In a couple of the pictures, there are other Needles you can see for comparison. There are also some Sabal and Serenoa growing around.

We have not really started anymajor planning with our spring project, but i had gone to different sites looking at different palm options. While zone doesnt matter, i have a list of palms that may or may not work here. I first went to Palmco and looked at their ratings, here they are: Phoenix canariensis: 9a Livistona chinensis: 9a Arenga engleri: 10b Chamaerops humilis: 8a Beccariophoenix alfredii: 9a Raphis excelsa: 9a Butia x Syagrus: 8a Livistona nitida: 8a/8b Butia odoratta: 8a Syagrus romanzoffiana: 10a Phoenix roebelenii: 10a Bismarckia nobilis: 10a Phoenix sylvestris: 8b Washingtonia (no specified type): 8b Trachycarpus fortuneii: 7b …

Weird Butia Trunk

Everytime I go to my sisters house in Panama City Beach, I go past this Butia.....It has always looked weird to me so I finally got a picture. It seems there are other Butia in the neighborhood that have a similar white trunk...I wonder if it the result of over zealous trimming, something in the soil, or trees coming from the same grower.

Weird late fall flowers on Sabal bermudana

Strange, late time to be developing seeds, especially after having already removed first flower/seed structures back in July! This is my Sabal bermudana that miraculously survived the record cold of last Feb ( low of 2*F). Maybe some sort of stress for the plant after such an exposure to something as devastating but the first round of inflorescence were the normal much branched and elongated as usual. These are all super short and scrawny. I count myself fortunate that I didn't lose this 30 year old beauty I bought as a 7 gal at the old Texas Palm Society plant sales they used to do down in Houston! Almost every other palm I bought from that era are gone.

Weird Sabal Frond

So my Sabal blackburniana threw a weird looking leaf. Its like the spear got stuck in the center while it was pushing out and bent the frond. Has anyone seen this before, and is this anything I need to worry about? Its been pushing out about a frond a month since the heat kicked in, and has another spear emerging now. Just want to make sure. Its on drip irrigation, gets bi-monthly liquid fertilizer with the rest of the yard, and every 2 months gets PalmGain at the base. Thanks.

Well, Make Sure Your Palms Have Good Airflow...

I was unwrapping my Washingtonia robusta and saw that there was definitely green, then once the burlap came off I see this... You can literally see where it goes from cold burn, to healthy, to rot. The spear is still intact, so off to get Hydrogen Peroxide I go.

Hopefully another one doesn't bite the dust after this past winter. This mule (partially) spear pulled today and didn't look very promising looking down into the growth point. Figured I should remove whatever was festering down in there. Fingers crossed

After many thoughts and considerations, I finally decided to buy a Queen Palm. I just had to because my local Lowes had some and I decided I would try at least one out. Definitely going to be thinking of a plan for the winter, and how I'll protect it.

West Coast Experiement

Calling all PNW folks. Its pretty clear by now that Brookings, OR has some astounding stuff growing there (and places as far north as Coos Bay), however has anyone experimented with anything more epic along the northern coast? If so, anyone willing to share? I might have to find an area there to guerilla plant some goodies... According to the 2012 hardiness zone map, areas like Lincoln City are comfortably positioned in Zone 9 (I heard rumors that areas surrounding devils lake are even higher thanks to a sweet microclimate) which begs the question, could more exotic things like CIDP's and more tender varieties or Trachys, Butias and even Washingtonias confidentl…

I was out in West Texas today and snapped a few pics. Enjoy These first washingtonia filifera were in Midland, TX and saw 8 degrees in 2011, with a daytime high of 18. i saw around 100 filifera around the midland area ranging from small plants to mature ones such as these. additionally there were a few trachycarpus and post 2011 robusta growing. I saw no more than 3 small, aweful looking sabals scattered around town.

Hello, My passion is to create a palm tree landscape but unfortunately I have to strikes. Im in zone 9a, which used to be zone 8B, and Im low on the water table. Drainage can be iffy in certain spots of my yard because its higher in silt, but it can be sandier in other areas. The biggest issue is that Im low on the water table. So what I did was dug a 18" hole and waited for the water to fill the hole. Then I kept adding sand back until it was no longer wet. I was left with about a foot depth before the hole held water. So my questions are: 1. Is this still considered wet feet being that I should have 1 foot of soil for the roots to not sit in water? …

Wet spot - Which Sabal would you plant?
by Chester B- 25 replies

I have an area of my lawn that always seems to hold a lot of moisture and the grass is very lush and dense. During periods of heavy rain this area can get pretty spongy. Generally speaking it’s a dry area but when we get periods of heavy rain it’s definitely one of the wetter spots. What do you all think are suitable trunking Sabals for this spot. I’ve seen palmetto growing in swamps so I assume they are a good pick. Any others?

Wet-cold protection idea

I have always wondered to what extent preventing water from entering the crown could spell major problems for a palm. Its obviously not good but if it is really is a significant factor (in combination with cold), could you build a lightweight mini umbrella (from plastic cones, for example) that could, supported by the spear, divert (at least most) water? Like a small wizard's hat... It would cover the most crucial area. Since its lightweight, you could even attach (and easily remove) it to large palms using a pole. Magical thinking?

What are my trachys doing?! 1 2

So we planted four 30# Trachy Fortunei last October at the completion of our pool project.. They were beautiful until, well we all know what happened in February... They are browned out (petioles are generally all green) fronds not so hot on all of them, but things are pushing and I have some hope of them recovering (I hope being the key word). I started noticing just recently the base of the trunk starting to look like someone after Thanksgiving where their belt is starting to get tight and they grow horizontally... Are they growing in girth, which would indicate growth upward at some point? What are my trachys doing?!

What are signs of drought for trachycarpus fortunei
by Rickybobby- 2 followers

What are the signs and examples of a trachycarpus in dry conditions currently my 7g has been indoors and a year ago I learned that I watered too much indoors and got root rot. This winter it has only been watered rarely. I moved it into my main palm room 80 degrees and I noticed all the fronds folded. A couple of fronds had light brown tipping. A few weeks ago I felt moisture when I put my finger down the soil. Probably just moist. Is folding a drought trend for these? There’s no way it was over watered. Like I said last time watered was like fall. And of course I know with lack of heat and air movement the soil stays moist longer. So the other day I gave the palm a…

I want to give my oldest palmetto to a family member who loves palms. This said family member lives in Tennessee zone 7a, wuld it survive in the ground here? I have a very limited amount time to know from someone elses opinion. I think it could with protection as this part of TN can easily drop below 0F at times with the most snow ive ever seen being 13 inches. The usual amount is 6" every year depending on how things set up. Clipper systems are usually what will get ya.

So I ended up putting some seedlings in ground that I couldn’t keep in my house, and they went through the srtic blast that brought it down to -3f and 8 days below freezing (I put a bunch of mulch on them). I don’t expect them to survive but it would be pretty interesting if they did, lol. All of them are Sabal Causiarum and one Washy hybrid. (The one above was right next to my Needle Palm) (Bad quality picture, I know)
