    Washington filifera is too yellow

    I have a Washingtonia filifera that I planted in an especially well-drained location hoping that it will survive damp North Carolina winters (Colington, NC 8b/9a). It has been in the ground 3 years and is doing well - except that the leaves yellow prematurely. It has drip irrigation and gets Palm Gain and/or Carl Poole palm food every spring and early summer. It is south-facing and gets almost all day full sun. Soil is sand/silt from old sand dunes. I've tried adding organic matter and even lime (although pH seems to be around 7). What should I try to get this thing to keep green leaves longer?

    I posted about this particular Washingtonia, which I believe is filibusta, in early February. I collected a bunch of seeds from the ground at the base of this palm, located at 944 Bragg Blvd, Fayetteville NC, and sowed them in a shallow Taco Bell take away container. I placed the container on a warming mat and two weeks later, I have a ton of baby washies. The parent palm has been in its currently location since at least 2007, based on the oldest streetview images available on Google.     I've planted two Filibustas this year. They show a lot of Filifera characteristics but I've noticed on some of the older fronds that the base petiole ( boots ) turned purple the last few days . Is this typical on old fronds that are about to die ?

    I'm sure most people who view the forums have probably seen this palm pop up before and I'll be heading out to see the palm in person sometime soon but the building was torn down and thankfully they didn't remove the palms, but the filibusta/filifera will be really taking the test of winter this year without that extra heat from the side wall! It's free standing now and I'm nervous for it but I hope it makes it! Just thought I'd give an update on it since I think it's the biggest I think in Fayetteville unless somebody is hiding more somewhere else I'm also glad they didn't remove any of the sabals because that would be a such a crime because of how slow they grow a…

    Washingtonia Filibustas/Robustas: When fronds burn annually

    Washingtonia Filibustas and Robustas aren't common here. There are probably a hundred or so spread across the Columbia area if I had to guess. I've kept my eye on dozens of them over the last several years and I've noticed they've always had noticeable burn during those years. During the extreme cold years where we dipped into the low teens and ultimately down to 10 degrees, the fronds are all burnt to a crisp and of course by late summer, all of these fronds are replaced. My question is this: Do these washingtonias grow faster when their fronds are burned every year by burn? Or do they grow at the same pace they normally would had they not been burned? My theory use…

    Can someone tell me from this picture if these are Washingtonia filifera or robusta? The person sells it as California fan palm here in San Antonio. I messaged the seller but no response yet. I'm looking for a filifera but everyone unfortunately sells robustas in San Antonio.

    Growing some Filifera from seeds at home thanks to NBTX11 who donated them to me. Let's see how that works out for me. One will be planted in the front yard once the trunk is visible. Any advices for successful growth would be appreciated. I'm new to this .

    Any idea why I had this spear pull? Hasn't been colder than maybe 42F. This is the largest of 5 I bought from Cold Hardy Palms and his operation is in the same town as I live. Plant looks good and has done great all Summer. I figure it'll be fine but curious why the spear pull.

    Planted this Washingtonia filifera last spring as a one gallon, left it out during this last winter and this is where we are at now in July. Burned a bit during the winter but it’s a 🚀 I had two planted, lost one but this one has been a tank. Genetics are from a local DFW parent that has been here for over 30 years.

    Here is damage from 15F (~-9C) on my largest W. filifera... Several snow events less than 2 inches each AND several nights below 20F. The emerging fronds that haven't opened yet appear ok.. but if there is any damage there it might show up later.

    After the drought and excessive heat experienced during the summer of 2022 in Central Texas, I was looking for palms that would need no care under such conditions yet also take our crazy winter extremes. Filifera (hybrids) appeared a good candidate as they are adapted to arid/subtropical conditions and, in some instances, survive harsh winters. Thanks to @knikfar and @Sabal King, I was able to get seedlings from Filifera 'survivors' from North Carolina, Austin (parent from @NBTX11?), and Dallas. Each of the parents survived prolonged cold& wet conditions with temperatures around 5F or lower (correct me if I am far off) so I am hoping some of the beneficial genes will …

    Hello, today I tried to unwrap my Washingtonia filifera, but I found it damaged. It was completely covered with frost cloth for almost three months and the lowest temperature it experienced was -9°C or 15°F for two nights in a row. The fronds were dry and bent to the side, so I had to cut them off. What did I do wrong and most importantly, will it be fine? Location: A small town approximately 30km from Bratislava, Slovakia (Zone 7b/8a).
