Perusing the local classified ads website and was watching this one for a while. The price kept dropping as I think the size threw people off and not the time of year most people are thinking about their gardens. At $80 I couldn’t pass it up. It’s about 4’ tall overall. It always pays to keep your eyes open.

Hey All, Thought on pop on here and show this big boy off. I finally move on Friday and this is one of my last palms to transport. It survived in ground with protection 0F and has pushed out 3 leaves since I dug it up. Had some cold ring but is growing out of it. Think I should plant it this late or hang on to it for a season? It’s my most prized palm! Nate

My house in Thurston County Washington is on the market and we got the keys to our new townhouse this morning. Going to be quite an adjustment from the space and privacy of 2 acres in the PNW. Fort Liberty (formerly Bragg) NC. Brought half a truck bed full of stuff. Lost a few things, I always expect dome attrition. It was a week on the road and the camper shell gets hotter than ambient. So I cooked a couple things. Mostly Trachycarpus, a handful of Sabals, some chamaedorea, a queen, Lytocaryum, butiagrus, a couple Mahonias, a fig and Olive i had laying around. Probably gonna see how long it takes to kill a Jubaea with humidity. …

Waite Arboretum: Possible Jubaea hybrid seed?
by Jonathan Haycock- 1 follower

The Payneham Jubaea chilensis is a very fertile palm, producing copious amounts of pollen and subsequent fruit. The Jubaea chilensis at Waite Arboretum appears to be self-sterile, offering tiny quantities of poor quality pollen per inflorescence and up until today, hasn’t dropped a single fruit over the last 2 years despite pushing almost year round spathes. A while ago, I noticed a limited number of fruit forming on the Waite Jubaea. They were more elongated than the round fruit typically seen on this species. I picked up the ripe windfall, cleaned the fruit to reveal seed that is again elongated, but also smaller than regular Jubaea. Due to the prev…

Waking up my W. Robusta and more

Well since this was our second 70F/21C day in a row I decided it was time to wake up the Washingtonia Robusta for the season. Here are a few pics of the unwrapping. This winter because of the size of the trunk I had to use three strands of C9 Christmas lights. I saw a small amount of fungus on the emerging spears but not a big deal it will quickly grow out of it. This things is a beast and I did not expect it to live this long. Going on it's 4th summer

Finally, we will get some warm nights in Texas (60-70F in DFW). I hope our surviving palms will start growing. My sabal mexicana has been moving very slowly so far; maybe 1/4 of an inch per week.

Its that time of year when half of my house gets torn down by a tornado and spring is here! Palm tree looks like it kicked the bucket but you never know. Anyways, this year our climate skipped spring and we are straight into summer (we never have an actual spring). Anyways, the tropical landscaping is soon to be worked on as planting will be in may and I will get to work in april after my birthday!

Was it really my fault and will it survive? (Mule Palm)
by LivistonaFan- 4 replies

I purchased a Butyagrus online in Spain and after 4 days in its parcel it arrived here. The leaf on the left and the spear in the middle each had a "white spot" (plant cells which cannot perform photosynthesis?) at the leaf base and they were extremely wobbly. I assumed that this was because of its time in the parcel as it certainly was warm and dark in there and therefore the palm could have pushed weak growth during this time. Furthermore it was in coco coir and had basically no roots which is why I have re-potted it very carefully in a slightly bigger pot with better soil. Due to a short heatwave which started the next day (37°C) the mule palm was in filtered shade beh…

Washington filifera is too yellow
by LeonardHolmes- 1 follower

I have a Washingtonia filifera that I planted in an especially well-drained location hoping that it will survive damp North Carolina winters (Colington, NC 8b/9a). It has been in the ground 3 years and is doing well - except that the leaves yellow prematurely. It has drip irrigation and gets Palm Gain and/or Carl Poole palm food every spring and early summer. It is south-facing and gets almost all day full sun. Soil is sand/silt from old sand dunes. I've tried adding organic matter and even lime (although pH seems to be around 7). What should I try to get this thing to keep green leaves longer?

I am beginning to think that my palm may not possess a significant amount of Filifera genetics, and I would appreciate a second opinion on it.
