Wine palm diseases

Hello everyone. New to the forum! Have a few large wine palms by my house, this one in the picture we’ve had for at least 8 years and lately the heart seems to be struggling followed by other branches that look pretty wonky. Was wondering if any one had any advice on what could be causing this and if there is anything I can do to help it?

Hey all, just sharing some of the potential bad news (see link!). Hope it won't turn out to be another palm massacre here in Texas but at least I'll be more prepared. I am definitely holding off on any z8+ palm purchases! https://www.severe-weather.eu/global-weather/polar-vortex-returns-usa-europe-winter-2021-2022-fa/

Winter is Coming
by GregVirginia7- 5 replies

Looks like that “dip in the jet stream” is coming our way...so far I see two days/nights sub-freezing with most nights into low 20’s F and some upper teens. I’m off tomorrow so I think I’ll do a little prep but not like past winters. As I said earlier, I want to grow cold hardy palms in normal NOVA winters without overdoing it on the protection. Anyway, the new Trachy F. will get well protected, as it should for a winter or two with an umbrella and a nice layer of burlap and frost cloth on its cage with lights on the ground around the trunk and up to the crown, just a matter of inches...but everything else is going to get protection lite. The established Trachy will get s…

Winter is coming...

Just wanted to wish everyone here a mild winter and share protection plans! Temperatures here in Central Texas have already been below freezing and next week we may see another dip (Fall basically lasted a week, ugh...). I don't have a lot of zone-pushing palms, technically, however, I do have a lot of a newly planted and/or younglings in the ground. I have yet to lose a palm to cold (some spear pull, though). This is what I do: - Get a big bale of straw and wrap the straw around the base of the palm where the spear is (if possible). I hold it in place by some sticks and cheap netting. - In addition, put a frost cloth over the top for the more sensitive palms …

Winter is Here

Freezing nighttime temps are arriving over the next 14-consecutive days...predictions have 14-nights below freezing (Fahrenheit) but only two daytime temps below freezing. For the cold hardy, this seems like a reasonable scenario as day temps will allow for recovery from the night’s freezes. In that period, there will be two consecutive days/nights below freezing...one at 25/12 and the next at 30/19. My palms have had worse long-term freezes than this...but I’ll wrap the Trachy’s trunk for the two consecutive days below freezing. The Sabal Brazoria and the Chamaerops Humilis are protected as usual all winter but will let the Sabal Minor straplings tough it out with just f…

Hi, I am thinking about buying 240ft 1200W heating cable for about $115. Palms will be wrapped with the cable and then with blankets. Advantages: only 1 extension cord, reliable, fairly cheap, heat spread linearly (as opposed to point heat with lights). Any thoughts? S.

Winter Protection

Fall is here and Winter wont be far behind it. I am needing some protection ideas for this winter. I have an 8' in the ground trachy. In the past, I have wrapped it with foil lined bubble wrap and that was worked ( It isnt very aesthetic ) but it has worked. I also have 2 washingtonias that are maybe 5' , a 4' sabal minor, and a Red grass palm. All of which I would like to overwinter. My Central Utah winters have sunny days with intense solar radiation, temperatures 30-40 degrees , but the nights are long and lows are usually around 10 degrees. I have debated building temporary greenhouses around them... but I am open to any and all suggestio…

Anybody ever try sticking a roof de-icing cord on a temperature-activated outlet under their mulch? Curious if this would buy you a few degrees in your yard overnight.

Just brainstorming a few ideas in order to save my palms this winter. This is my 1st year growing majesty palms in zone 5b and Im planning to use red infared heat lamps that turn on when the temps drop to 45. All this is inside a tee-pee wrapped with multiple layers of shrink wrap. Is there anything Im missing? Is there any reason why this couldn't/wouldn't work?

Winter protection for Pindo Palm in 7b
by knikfar- 13 replies

This will be my pindo palm's first winter in the ground. I've planted it in, what I think is, a nice microclimate. It's about 10' away from the east wall of my house, 5' away from the west wall of my greenhouse and about 4' away from the south side of a large willow oak. The oak is at least 50' tall but I've had the lower canopy trimmed up to allow sunlight at the base. It'll get full sunshine from the early morning until early afternoon in the winter. That being said, I'm in Raleigh, NC, zone 7b. I'm planning to have to protect my pindo a few nights every winter. There will definitely be some winters, like the past two, where I won't but I can't count on that. So I'm won…

Winter protection for small trachy?
by newtopalmsMD- 5 replies

Has anyone covered a trachy in a pile of leaves for the winter in zone 7a as a means of winter protection. It's been in the ground 14 months. Read about this in palms wont grow here but feel a bit funny about burying a live tree (below) in leaves. Any experiences would be helpful. (Last winter a used a cage covered with frost cloth and Christmas lights whenever it got down to 12 degrees F.) Thanks

Winter Protection Tips Please

I am going into my second winter with my Roystonea Regia. I moved it twice this spring and summer. It’s final spot is 10’ from the back porch south facing spot of the house. A swimming pool was installed with a 20’ walk way which should be a favorable micro climate. I have noticed over the winters, 20-30’ from the house (before the pool was installed) frost would rarely accumulate on the grass. Furthermore, the grass stayed green throughout winter in this zone while the rest of the yard browned over late Jan-Feb. Any tips for protection will be greatly appreciated!!

Winter protection...now starting

Wanted to share what I do to protect my in the ground palms that has proven to be very good protection. 55 gallon plastic barrels. I only use the white or semi transparent ones. Spray foam. Takes 4 cans of spray foam to line the barrel Christmas lights. C7 or C9 and sometimes regular 40 or 60watt light bulb Thermocube Burlap or frost cloth to wrap palms 4 ft re bar PVC tube ratchet straps Barrels easily stack, so if we get a stretch of nice weather I can simply remove the top barrel. It's also very easy to service the lights if they should quit for any reason. Palm being protected here is my 1 Washingtonia filifera

I'm counting the days to March . After experiencing a cold winter with an artic blast with lows of 16,21,24,28 and freezing rain recently I like to show you guys the recovery process of our palms. This has been our palms first winter and it definitely was challenging and sad to see what they had to go through. Some of my palms completely defoliated like my Queen and Wash.Robusta but the good news is they all survived and recovering well thanks to our Texas sun . Our Wash.Filifera in the backyard lost 3 fronds .I'm not going to celebrate yet but I'm not going to expect another severe artic winter since we already got hit several times this winter. Enough is enough. The s…

Winter Still Here

Excellent cold hardy palm...somewhat protected needle under a holly tree... Unprotected needle just as cold hardy but has suffered some segment tip damage. It’s been plastered to the ground three times this winter. Had an umbrella over the medi all winter and knew I was pulling it a bit early. It’s not used to this kind of direct hit. However, the pup on the left side has looked far better than the larger parent this winter...uniformly green while the parent culled several fronds and has a few more It’s going to kill. A bit concerned as it has a yellowish look but maybe it’s making room for new fronds coming out. I did fertilize all my palms Saturda…

Had my first heavy frost this morning at 30F, colder tonight into the upper 20’s. Tender flowering plants/palms are inside for the winter. This cold spell is supposed to last to the end of the week. Good bye banana, ginger, canna leaves. There always the first to go any ways. LOL!
