Why do people complain about Sabal minor being too slow?
by Tennessee Palms- 1 follower

I am growing hundred's of Sabal Minors all still Seedlings and I'm actually pretty amazed that they're growing much faster than what people say they grow, I have seedlings that are a year old already on their third strap and then my older McCurtain which is two years old and on strap #7. I personally think they grow pretty fast compared to some other palms I have grown from seed.

Hello. I have an Arenga Micrantha that is gorgeous when I successfully prop it up. However, my props always fall over after a day or two because this tree so desperately wants to grow lying flat along the surface of the ground. Is this normal? I have looked at other photos of this palm, and they all appear to be upright. Even the suckers in those photos do not insist on lying directly flat against the ground horizontally. I am not sure what to do. I have tried using stakes to hold the Arenga Micrantha upright, but I am not very gifted at building staking contraptions and may have to build an actual upright reinforcement structure. This is becoming annoying…

Why don't Majesty & Cat Palms like inside my house?

Hello guys, This is not the first Majesty palm that doesn't like it inside. This time I had a humidifier in the room and the humidity was ~45%, but still the Majesty & Cat Palms were going allow. Inside they were standing near a window for 2 weeks after I bought them in HomeDepot (they were inside there as well). Today I decided to put them outside, hopefully they will like it better outside. Majesty on the left & cat palm on the right: They were completely green 2 weeks ago when I bought them from Home Depot. What's wrong in my house?

Why I hate Kansas...

Didn't know where to post this so I'll put it here: Ugh! I hate Kansas! Can't wait to get out of this hell...it is going to SNOW AND ICE tomorrow...with lows in the low to mid 20s tomorrow night...which, of course, means it will be in the teens at my place. I wouldn't worry if my butia wasn't already compromised, but I honestly don't know what to do...my Butia is the only palm in the ground, the others are still able to be moved back indoors, so I think I'll do that...no need compromising the health of the others...I'm thinking I'm gonna tie up the fronds, take Christmas lights (the regular kind, I don't have any C9, and you can't buy them around here this time of year),…

Why is my needle palm dying?
by faceyourfaces- 30 replies
In July I bought two needle palms from a guy selling them on eBay. One of them was clearly in worse condition than the other and it went into rapid decline in September. Today I was able to pull the most recent frond out of it and confirm that it's now completely dead. However, the other palm appeared to be in great condition and showed no bad signs until last month and now it is going into rapid decline like the other palm. The oldest fronds are dying one by one and all of them have dried up quickly. The palm on September 29 vs. the palm on November 23: The guy who sold it to me said he would send me a new needle palm in the spring to replace the one tha…

Why is my trachy yellowing at leaf bases?
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

I have a potted Trachy and I noticed this morning that fronds are turning yellow at the end of each petiole where the leaves attach (see first picture below) Every frond is doing this. The petioles are green, it's just the leaf bases. I have not seen this before. The pot sits outside in the sun for most of the time (southern exposure) and is taken into the garage after sundown if night time temperature is predicted below 20 F. On really cold days or snow events it also stays in the garage under grow lights with the rest of its stable mates. (second picture) Garage is not heated and is usually in low 40's in winter. On the recent 9 degree F night it dropped to 36…

Why is Sabal mexicana seldom grown east of Texas? 1 2
by Sabal_Louisiana- 2 followers

I suspect it is because most growers in the Southeast don't think about it. It is seldom supplied by nurseries because the default of its type for the region is the common S. palmetto. The two species look so similar anyway. However, it might be just different enough to add a little unique flavor to the landscape. I'm sure someone is apt to mention that S. Mexicana is better adapted to the drier climate of Texas but if it can be grown in humid Houston why not elsewhere? Likewise, cold hardiness should not be an issue for the deep South anyway. Also, I am wondering how far north can S. Mexicana be cultivated in the south central US? My guess is to the Red River, or ju…

Wichita palms, 6 weeks after arctic event...signs of life!
by jfrye01@live.com- 13 replies

So it has been nearly six weeks since the record cold event here in the central US...and I'm pleased to say I'm seeing signs of recovery in most of the palms at the Church of the Nazarene in downtown Wichita. Keep in mind, the groundskeeper here was out of town through the duration of the event, so none of these ended up getting any special care...they were quite literally exposed to the elements. It is likely, however, that the snowfall we experienced in the days preceding the event may have definitely helped insulate. Wichita Eisenhower Airport sits out southwest of downtown several miles, and that is where the official low temperature for the city was measured. The…

Wild S. Minor on MD Eastern Shore?
by Saltydog- 2 followers

I spoke with a Maryland game warden yesterday who told me that he found a grove of apparently wild sabal minor growing in the woods in Dorchester County near the town of Hurlock (Eastern Shore / Delmarva Peninsula - Zone 7A). I find this to be somewhat implausible, as it’s my understanding that the nearest naturally occurring S Minor is on Monkey Island in northeast NC about 100 miles south. I’m not even aware of S Minor occurring in Dismal Swamp at the VA-NC border (only unsubstantiated reports). Perhaps someone spread some seed? Anybody else heard of such a thing?

Hey y'all, Can y'all id this wild green homey? It's growing on my mom's land in the middle of the woods in East Mississippi. Has an inflorescence - I tried to get closer, then I saw one of those big black and yellow spiders and uhhh me and Sancho don't do big spiders. I'm guessing it's a Sabal variety and it's obviously been here for a while.

Wild Silver Serenoa Repens in Beaufort County, SC?!
by clinenotklein- 0 replies

I've lived in Hilton Head area for literally decades and never noticed any of the native Serenoa Repens being even remotely Silver until I stumbled across these today. What's interesting to note is I found them in an area just east of Bluffton before the Bridge to Hilton Head, an area unusually subtropical looking for even Southern Beaufort County, which has more in common with Florida than the rest of the state. Note the super limey ones on the far right to get a sense of contrast. These even have bluish tints. All obviously wild based on how they sit on the land.

Will 32F (0 Celsius) kill potted palms?

Well, since it's warm, and supposed to stay that way, I moved my Trachy and Pindo outside...Forecast showed the lows to be at least 35F-50F for the next several days. Anyway, NWS updated the forecast for tomorrow night, that 35 is now a 32...my question is, will this hurt my potted plants? they are on the patio on the Northeast side of my house...I wouldn't imagine 32 would do much damage, but I do remember reading freezing temperatures are much more hurtful to potted plants...I don't want to lug these big heavy guys back inside unless I have to...

I am thinking about buying a male/female pair of Phoenix dactylifera for my yard near Austin. But will our cold winters keep them from thriving enough to bear fruit? Would another date palm do better? Or do I need to forget about growing dates?

Will Arenga engleri stay small in a confined space?

I’m thinking of planting them on either side of my front door. A bit of bushiness is fine but I’m wondering if they will tend to stay more compact in a small space, as something this big would be a bit much. I suppose I could just remove any annoying trunks as they emerged?

Will green sabal birmingham seeds sprout?

Hi all, I collected a bunch of sabal birmingham seeds yesterday. They are all green but were already falling off the tree and the ones I pulled came off with almost no resistence. They're soaking in water now. About half sank to the bottom and the other half are floating at the top. Is there any chance these might germinate or should I throw the bunch out and try again next month when the seeds are black, assuming there are any left.
