Spotted 2 more even larger Washingtonias in zone 8b

I have another spotting in Evans,GA this really gives me confidence in the fact that Washingtonias can thrive in a hot humid zone 8b climate. These 2 in the back of the picture by the house are even larger than the one in my last post. They also have a very nice collection of Pindos, Palmettos, Windmills, and Sagos. The Washingtonias are proof that they can survive snowstorms and temperatures even as low as 11 degrees fahrenheit, as I have also listed the yearly lows for the area in the next picture. I am thinking about growing a collection with as much variety also if I stay in the area and not move.

Spray foam for spear protection
by Advective- 8 replies

Whenever ice is in the forecast, I wrap the spears of my palms with a thick layer of frost blanket. Without it, they have a tendency to spear pull. As they get taller with full crowns, this is becoming less safe and it isn't realistically possible with palms like Washingtonia. Can I use spray foam in the crevices where the spear emerges to keep ice out? I'm envisioning a scenario where it keeps everything water tight and then the foam gets pushed out with new growth in the spring. However: 1. Is spray foam likely to be toxic to palms and might there be a non-toxic version? 2. Is it assured that the palm would push out the foam or might it gum things up?

Spraying Water to Protect from Freeze Damage
by Alicehunter2000- 16 replies

The following publication got me thinking, has anyone done experiments with palms to find out if spraying water on them during a freeze is beneficial. The publication below explains that in guava, and plants in general, the mechanism for damage in leaf structure is actually dehydration with freezing temps. As we know palms with high drought tolerance also show freeze tolerance for the most part. If dehydration occurs with a freeze, then adding water to the exterior of the palm should not harm it ...right? Of course I am talking about palms that already can handle higher freezing temps such as queens etc. and not those plants that see damage at the freezing mark. This …

Spring 2021 Update (Zone 7b MD)
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 3 replies

Greetings! Here’s a little update on my palms after this icy winter! According to Accuweather, our lowest temperature this year was 19°F 1) Trachycarpus Fortunei ‘Bulgaria’ - this was wrapped in a few layers of burlap. It looks great and no spear pull! 2) Sabal ‘Louisiana’ - this was unprotected other than some dead leaves that naturally gathered at the base. This looks stellar as well and it’s starting to get its palmate leaves! 3) Sabal Minor ‘McCurtain’ - unprotected; super slow but still growing! 4) Sabal ‘Louisiana’ #2 - unprotected and exposed to the elements. This poor palm was buried in snow and sleet. The center spear even looked lik…

Not all the plants at my house, but wanted to point some things out. We hit an ultimate low of -4f followed the next day by a high of -1f and a low that next night of -2f. Then 3 more days that we didn’t go above freezing. Sudden really low drops not such a big deal when It warms back up quickly. This was a prolonged deep freeze like you would see farther north of here. The only palms that outright died were 2 smaller Trachycarpus fortunei, 2 smaller sized Trachycarpus Takil, and 1 Serenoa repens ‘silver’. Nothing received any heat. This was a real surprise that it survived, completely defoliated, covered with a tall 7 gallon bucket. All the green it pushed out …

Spring is not my friend in Chicago...

I purchased this trachycarpus fortunei from Home Depot in late September for $30. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to re-pot (he is a overwinter in garage) He took no damage (I brought him inside for polar vortex) So I decided to put him outside for April? HUGE MISTAKE lol. Yesterday I left him outside even though I heard there would be very light snow, and I was in a rush to attend church. I came back to this;

So, this spring I planted 22 new palms in my garden, in Zone 9a. Who wants to start a betting pool on what will still be alive this time next year. All were seedlings, 3 years and older. They will receive very minimal winter protection, if any at all. 5 Queen Palm 'Supernova' (Syagrus romanzoffiana 'Supernova') 1 Windamere Palm (Trachycarpus latisectus) 3 Caranday Palm (Copernicia alba) 2 Silver Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens 'Silver') 4 Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera 'Maktoom') 1 Jaggery Palm (Caryota urens) 2 Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti) 1 Manambe Palm (Dypsis decipiens) 1 Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) 2 Bizmarkia (Bismarckia nobilis) (a suppo…

Spring planting advice needed.

Hi guys, it’s been a while. I haven’t had anything worthwhile to share, I’m the talk to talk only when I really got something to say. As some of you may know I have a few palms in pots, the largest are a California and Pindo. Both have actual trunks 😍. The others (windmill, Euro, Canary & a Cretan). All of these are still straps. I also have two sagos. My question is when should I put them in the ground? I have been looking at the forecast, day and night temperatures to get a feel. Also I’ve been keeping them on the dry side for the last couple of months, except I did put them outside (they’re in a shed) so that they could get some rain (it was in the 70’s). …

Spring Plantings 1 2
by Ben G.- 40 replies

So 18 months after I moved in, I am finally getting around to putting some more of my potted palm collection in the ground. I have a large L-shaped bed that goes around two sides of my garage. So here's what I've got so far (mulch to come tomorrow) The North side has four azaleas alternating with 3 needle palms. On the East side I've got a small yaupon holly, two trachycarpus wagnerianus (with little zebra grass clumps still dormant in between them), and my larger birmingham sabal on the Southeast corner. I included some closer shots of the individual palms. All are probably happy to get in the ground after years in their pots.

Spring Progress

After a relatively mild winter but night temperatures consistently below freezing, the palms did well. We only had a couple nights in the teens with next days below freezing but otherwise, very stable temps. The Trachy, Brazoria and Needle, unprotected except for some lights barely used, are pushing a lot of new growth. I fed all with PalmGain about a month ago. The Trachy is still recovering from that winter hit a year ago…a lot of frond damage but with this milder winter, I think it’s almost recovered all the fronds it lost. It has more flower spathes than ever…maybe 12 or so…the Brazoria is a little on the yellow side but it’s a much lighter blue …

Spring recoveries after 5 degrees with no protection

I have lost many palms over the years to freeze damage. I have used various methods of protection with mixed results, but I stopped protecting about 5 years ago. My area is officially 7b, but it has been a decade since it has hit 5 degrees at my house. I had some minor bronzing before the cold event. Almost everything showed some damage two days later. There have been no losses and things are starting to look much better despite the surprise snow today.

Spring trimming

This is about half way through trimming and getting rid of trash in the yard. 1) Sylvester palm- 5 years in the ground from 5 gallon container- TyTy Nursery- Tifton, Ga. 2) European Fan Palm: 8 years in the ground. Bought for $100 in Starke, Fl. 3) Butia: been on the property for about 80 years. Taller than it looks, and it has a curve in the trunk that takes away from the height. One side is trimmed. 4) Chinese Fan: been on the ground for 6 years. Bought from Saint Simon’s Island Ace Hardware. 3 gallon pot for $25 5) robusta: bought firing $50 from a guy 6 years ago in Jesup, Ga (was throwing it away) 6) Mule I bought for …

Spring Trimming in the Cold

Not sure the high hit 50 today, and low tonight will be 32, but I had an awesome day of spring cleaning in the gardens. Here is one of renewed scenes. The 3 Phoenix sylvestris palms, only two visible in photo with one just off to the right, got some big hair cuts today. Our little statue named Jasmine WABOHH is now visible again for the first time in several years. And she is sporting a new gazing ball as well, the last one was nailed in Hurricane whatever it was last year or two. I don't even keep track any more. Now I can get under them to clean up and mulch. It was brisk out there l, especially when the wind blew and sun tucked behind a cloud, but heavenly as well. …

As we start the countdown to the summer solstice here in Maine, every year I trim the windmill of its flowers before they make a mess and help promote frond growth. Mulch the gardens and even though it never ends I give the lawn a good trim to welcome the summer months (hopefully no drought). figured I’d share the progress and here’s a few pictures of this years landscapes windmill before trim, and after,
