Hello palmers, sorry for any problems, i am new to the Palm Talk. When i got interested into palms, my friend got too and he wants a palm for his garden. We've chosen trachy because they are most hardy and pretty beautiful. I dont really know which one is best. We live in the Czech Republic in the one of warmest climates in here. The zones here are 7a-6b, just something between. I wonder which one type should i get and how big. The orders are fast growing and tree-type. I thought the Tra takil bageshwar is good but, uno, i dont have palms on garden yet so and i am planning to put outside a washie, not a trachy Thank you for help and feedback.

I can't plant anymore so this 1 meter tall Trachycarpus must stay in a pot,since I live in Wales I have limited choice of soils for my trachy which is going into a bigger pot,so far I got a choice of multipurpose,multipurpose with added John innes,ericaceous,John innes 1,2,3,can also get vermiculite,perlite,manure what combination is best for potted fortunei.

Can anyone offer insight into an appropriate trachycarpus species? I have a spot in my yard that would be nice for one. Soil is on the heavy side in that part of the yard, but is good. Marginally acidic. Sun is direct until 10AM in the summer, then filtered and shaded the rest of the day. Wind is almost nonexistent, and especially down there, which is sheltered by large, mature mesquite trees. Its the coldest part of the yard. Morning lows will hit 25F with regularity there, and we’ll see 17F once a decade or so, albeit brief until the sun crests. Daytime winter highs are 70+ typically. Summer is obviously a bear with 110+ over 40 days this year, but that…

It has probably been done before, but could we get an updated Trachycarpus species list. Please list in order from least to coldest hardy with associated temps the species will first start showing damage, and also for the ultimate low one could reasonably expect survival with major damage.

My fathers Trachycarpus takagii (T. wagnerianus x T. fortunei F1) flowered for the first time this year (female). He pollinated it with Trachycarpus wagnerianus and seeds appear to be developing. Hoping the resultant backcross (T. takagii x T. wagnerianus) will stiffen the leaves further (more wind resistance) without significantly reducing leaf size. My father and I had a little chuckle at the irony because he was the first out of the two of us to produce a cross. I emigrated to Australia in 2019 to follow my dream to grow a wider variety of palms and create hybrids, yet my father (who’s not that interested in them) beat me to the punch in the UK.

Hi, In my Trachycarpus Takil, the growth cone died after spring frosts. I took the frozen cone out, dug it out of the ground and put it in a pot. I have recently checked the roots and they are ok (i noticed new white roots). Nevertheless, the palm tree has not been sprouting new leaves for half a year ... Can you recommend something to starting growth in this palm tree?

Hey everyone i have sowed these 3 species. Actually and a bunch of fortunei. But the other 3 the info isn’t as available There in baggies. Should they be outside in the shade so they get cool nights and warm days or in the house at room temperature? I’ve had them on some bottom heat for a week but think maybe that is wrong for these. Also chime in on fortunei I had them in my palm room but it is always 77 to 80f so today I put them outside in the shade. Too date have germinated everything g pretty much but a trachycarpus of any kind. Thanks everyone.

Hey All - I picked up the palm below last weekend from a local nursery. It was labeled Trachycarpus Takil. The gentleman who sold it to me said it is more than likely Trachycarpus Nanital, which I'm equally excited about because I'm looking forward to one day having a beefy Trachy. Curious if anyone out there actually has a true, mature Takil? From my conversation with the seller of my palm, he was saying he thinks most (if not all) specimens marketed as Takil do not actually end up being Takil.

About 5 years ago I bought 3 Trachycarpus sold as takils. This was well after people knew many "takils" were actually other forms of fortunei. I can't recall who I bought them from, but they were a knowledgeable and experienced palm grower. (I trusted that they knew what they were selling) They did always have large (for the size of the palm overall) fronds and tighter, less messy fiber on the trunks. I had hoped that I could one day get viable seed of my own between the three palms. Whether they are true talk or not, I tried to protect them like they were indeed rare palms. I dug them up at the last minute in Feb 2021, before we hit -14F in Oklahoma. I replant…

Trachycarpus tesan. Just another thread to document growth. Seeds from Garry tsen- coldplant. In (Walmart brand) Promix, not soaked, skin on, room temp,, in <4 weeks they're pushing radicals. Planted 06Mar22. Lots more are pushing, as I was digging around, but I didn't want to disturb them too much. Here you can see four that were near the top. Minor mold but it doesn't seem to bother anything. Pick it out by hand and hit with H2O2.

Hi all, Early this year I purchased the following Trachycarpus seedlings: Trachycarpus Fortunei, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus, Trachycarpus “Takil”, Trachycarpus “Kumaon”, Trachycarpus Princeps “Stone gate”, Trachycarpus Ukhrulensis and Trachycarpus Wagnerianus x Fortunei. For these variants I have read various claims, the Manipur and Princeps would be less cold tolerant and the Takil and Kumaon would be more cold tolerant compared with the normal Fortunei. Does anyone have personal experience with these forms? Is the difference in cold hardiness significant? Stefan

Hi guys, I'm new here so take it easy on me I have a 5' tall Fortunei, and a bunch of Musa Basjoo bananas planted up here (in the ground) in southern Ontario, Canada, 2 hours south of Toronto. I also have a smaller non-hybrid waggie palm in a pot. My question is, I noticed the new leave thats opening looks bleached or almost transparent. I did recently over fertilize it with a liquid based fertilizer (by mistake) I use miracle grow palm slow relese fertilizer since I can't get any of the higher quailty palm fertilizers up here. Is this somthing I should be worried about, will it flush out over time.? Also does this look like a pure wagerianus palm?

Hello everyone I am planning to install a trachycarpus (either fortunei or wagnerianus, preferably the latter) next to a wall in my garden. As I am located in 6b hardiness zone, house walls are my huge friends as they provide a bit of warm air in the winter. I was wondering how far should those palms be installed not to get their leaves interrupted by the wall? Kind regards Maciej

For some years I was trying to make this cross. After being hold up by some one who had the Princeps male flowering for some years already, I finally succeeded in pollinating my Waggy with pollen from a dutch palm enthousiast. The result off sowing some seeds in January, is so far two seedlings. I think that the seeds behave as the true Princeps, a few will germinate in the first year, and the others the years to come.

How does one ballpark the weight of a Trachycarpus fortunei? This lot is getting developed after the 20th, and I’d like to save this palm from the excavators, just don’t want to make it worse if I can’t lift it. It’s 8’ in total height.
