I have been pretty lucky with healthy palms in the few years I've been collecting so please excuse my ignorance, but can anyone tell me what this white funk is on my Mule? It looks like little ovals like bugs or eggs but they don't move from what I can tell.

What's wrong with my mule?!?! 1 2

This mule was planted back in February of 2021. It did great until roughly August, when I noticed one of the lower fronds browned (more of a gray) quite quickly. It gets plenty of water, as it's next to 3 larger/healthy mules planted 2 years ago. I didn't think it was a big deal, so I cut the frond off. Another month goes by and another one has browned and I cut it off. Fast forward till late October, 3 additional fronds have browned. I'm not really sure what's going on? Wilt? Lethal bronzing? I'm at the point where I wanna rip it out. One thing I thought of is, over the summer, our dog chewed up one of the fronds pretty badly and I didn't remove it right away. …

What's wrong with my Sabal etonia?
by redbeard917- 28 replies
- 1.7k views
This Sabal etonia has grown here slowly but steadily for years. It's always been completely green. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever watered or fertilized it. I'm not far from the native range and have placed it in a location with sandy soil and a good bit of sunlight. Very recently, perhaps a month or so ago, I noticed it starting to decline. The newest leaf looks green, but the most recent look mottled and the oldest have gone completely brown. All the leaves you see on it were green previously. It almost looks like cold damage, but it hasn't been very cold here. I have other tender palms that get damaged every year and all are still untouched. Thanks

In august I received three sabal minor "louisiana" palms in the mail from a grower in Florida. They were shipped bare root and were in transit for approximately three days. Once they were dropped off at my house, I promptly planted all three in large pots filled with a mixture of palm/cactus soil and regular miracle grow potting soil. My intention was to overwinter them in my garage (under a window that gets plenty of light) and then put them in the ground this spring. However, by november two of the palms died off, the spears browned and were able to be pulled out of the rootball, along with the browned fronds, very easily and were "slimy" at the bottom. I still have not…

What's wrong with my trachy? 1 2
by NCFM- 43 replies

I planted this trachy back in May, and it was doing great until about a week ago. The individual blades on several of the fronds have now closed up, and the emerging spears have some brown/discoloration. The palm is planted in full sun, and it is the dog days of summer, so maybe this is heat stress? You can see here how the blades are closed/shut: Here is what it looked like when I first planted it:

I am asking for a German fried who is not a member here. Before too many words, a few photos: This Sabal was planted in 2007 and grew very well until three years ago. Leaves started becoming continuously smaller since then and this year, it started to push out a flower stalk from the centre - it almost looks like a mini-corypha's terminal spike. It is protected every winter and never sees temperatures below -8C (17.6F). Has anybody ever seen anything like this? Any chance of survival/recovery? After all, it is still alive and growing... Any suggestions as to how to facilitate its recovery? thanks!

What’s a good fungicide/disinfectant and palm tree fertilizer?

My palm is not doing the best, and if the spear pulls or not, it would be a good question to ask what brands and types of palm fertilizer and fungicide would work best for everyone’s palm trees.

I have know about this NY Times article for a while. It shows a graph estimating future cold hardiness zones. I think it is overestimating a bit, but it would be cool to see palms all the way up the east coast to the nyc metro. Whats the best Palm for this spot!
by Swolte- 1 follower

Dear all, Hoping to get some advice! I am in Texas zone 8B and I have a spot that gets afternoon sun between large cedars (blocking morning sun) and a wax Myrtle (blocking evening sun). In addition, there is a deep gully (often has some water streaming through it) next to it which may provide an extra moist micro-climate. I am looking for a palm that: - Has silvery/grey or very light blue varieties (something that contrasts nicely with the cedars & myrtle). - Gets at least 20ft tall (to stick above the myrtle at some point). - Is not too terribly slow (e.g., Jubaea). Oh, and since I am trying to collect different species in my yard, they cannot be a…

Anyone harvest and or germinate fresh parajubaea seeds? Normally, seeds that fall from palms that are green are immature and not viable. However are parajubaea seeds viable when they are large and green, OR only once they turn brown? I am Looking at a buying a few “fresh” seeds out of California, and the green thing bothered me. thanks, Ryan

When can I put my zone 9 palms outside?

Hello, Should I wait until the temperature never drops below 50F (10C) or it's fine if, say, one night it drops to 40-45F (5-7C) but in general it's 50F+ (10C+)? Currently our average day temperature is 70F (21C) and average night temperature is 47F (8C). In a few days I will have: Majesty, Cat, Sago, European, Windmill, Pindo, all in pots.

When do I stop watering Sabals for winter
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

This year I see lots of people are watering sabals every or every other day. I adopted this practice and it seems to have benefited my newer sabals (Louisiana in particular is on its 5th pretty large frond of the summer). I see this advice (though less often) for Trachys as well. So my question is, for 7a areas, when do we stop the daily watering in preparation for winter? I'm in MD with pretty hot and humid summers...good for sabals, maybe not as good for Trachys. My sabals range in age from a sabal minor Cape Hatteras that put out its first palmate frond this summer to a sabal minor in its second year of putting out seeds, to Brazorias, Louisiana and Birmingham in…

Hi everyone, Just wondering what part of the country you are in and when you plan or already have taken off your winter protection for the year. I’m in MA and it looks like next week will be upper 40-55f for highs and lower 30f for lows. Hopefully uncovering needle and sabal minor. Probably st. Patty’s for windmill. I plan on uploading photos when I do.

When is too late to plant in zone 6b
by bgifford- 1 follower

Hello! I know that Spring is the preferred time to plant in the colder areas. I got another Trachycarpus fortunei and a Mule the other day and was wondering if now is too late. First frost is somewhere late October but we usually have a lot of still warm days for several weeks. Trachy is total of 2 1/2 ft and Mule 4ft. I would of course protect those like my other Palms but was just curious if it's feasible to plant now or if it's too risky. Thanks as always! Brian

When to cover Washies?
by MSX- 8 replies

Hello palmtalkers! Another question to our gurus from a newbie - when is it okay to cover Washingtonia palms (day-night air temperatures pattern)? Some Washingtonia owners suggest to only cover the palms if both day and night temperatures entirely fall below freezing (below 0 degrees C or 32 degrees F) and not to cover the trees on above freezing days and subfreezing nights forecast pattern to keep the trees as healthy as possible, how true is that? To cover or not with the forecast like this? I have two Washingtonia palms planted in the ground this spring and by now by the end of this growing season they reached this size. What are the limits of…

When to plant
by bgifford- 4 replies

Hello everyone. I finally decided to plant some of my Palms this year here in zone 6b. I have some Trachycarpus fortunei and Washingtonia Robusta that I want to plant. Having seen others in lower zones have success protecting theirs I thought I should do ok here. So my question is: When should I plant? Meaning should I go by certain temps or once the risk of a frost has past. Thanks B

I have a small Jubaea that I've been growing out. It's in a 3 gallon pot right now and is just about going pinnate. When do you all think is the right size for it before I stick it in the ground? I'm in a cool 8B.
