What palms for my climate.
by MonkeDonkezz- 4 replies

I am in zone 7a, 2 blocks from zone 7b. I would protect the palms, mostly from early January to mid February, which is the coldest period in nyc. I do not have any microclimates around my house, except a small spot with very dry and claylike soil under a tree. So what species could I grow? I know I could grow Sabal Minor and Rhapidophyllum Hystrix when they are mature without protection, and I could grow Trachycarpus Fortunei but minimally with protection most years, Palms can be from 6b-8b

What palms grows fastest when having cold nights?
by Palmfarmer- 6 replies
my days are anything from 20-27c now during my winter. most palms have stopped growing now that its like 1c every night. I still see some growth on the queens the medjool and my robilinis though. The others are in suspended animation more or less and those are: Robust, Filifera. Filibusta, Chinensis, Butia, Bismarckia, Kentia and Majesty. What palms could grow at a reasonable pace with cold nights?

What size pots to transplant liners.

Palms came today despite the chaos at the post office. Hoping someone has some insight on how large of pot I should put these liner sized hybrids in. Is 5 gal ok? Or 15, is bigger better? or should I stage up slower… I figure the less transplants the better on the plant, and it can go straight in the ground from 5 or 15 gal when ready maybe spring 2023. The roots are visible and or coming out of the bottom of all 4 liners. BJxQ BxPJT (2) Yatay x Jubaea Thanks for any tips!

What Survived Texas Worst Winter in 30 Years Update

Several palms that initially survived to see spring died by fall. Most notably almost every Washingtonia Filifera and Brahea Armara… my very tall Phoenix Sylvestris. I have a map view of the before, and I circled what survived that was over 20FT tall. They were 2 Canaries, 1 Washingtonia Filifera, 1 Washingtonia Hybrid, 1 Sabal Palmetto, 1 Sabal Mexicana. Less than 2 dozen smaller palms survived out of a total collection of over 100.

What temp does foliage die?...Windmill Palm
by trachydude- 3 replies
Hi guys, getting close to that time of year again. My 7ft trachy came back great this summer, not wanting a repeat of last winter. I'm in zone 7, Oklahoma City. I know the cold hardiness of the overall tree, just curious as to what temperature foliage sustains damage and dies? I want to try to protect everything that has grown back over the spring/summer, especially if we get an abnormal cold front like last winter. Thanks!

cold hardy What temp should I really worry at?

I know the Livistona chinensis isnt going to do well where I am, but the clump was cheap as dirt and I planted it anyways. Worst case its a perennial until I can get my seedling sabal minor to a plantation size. But what temperature should I start worrying about this clump? I might just do a permanent greenhouse for it so it will have a head start in 2018 and will trunk better than it has this year. I have 7 trachycarpus fortunei that are well rooted and while all have put out several fronds since march (feel like even the slower ones have put out 10+ ythis year but Ive been bad at recording progress) Im worried about their first winter. While some have start…

Do Trachycarpus Nanus flower in the spring like other Trachy's? I have three of these that are some15 years old now, and they have never flowered. I should be a grandfather by now darn it. They are slow indeed, but you would think by now eh? Thanks for any input on this.

What To Do for Damping Off?

Greetings everyone, Not too long ago I bought some Trachycarpus seeds and began the germinating process. For the seeds that I bought, I’ve noticed that mold has begun to form around some of them but they have not yet germinated (if anyone has advice for what to do with these, such as how to disinfect them, it would be appreciated). However, the seller included some freebie ‘Winsan’ seeds and those have germinated. Upon further inspection, though, I’ve noticed that there appears to be a fuzzy white mold growing along the root system. It isn’t the easiest to see in the pictures, but it appears that the seedlings have begun to “damp off”. Since these…

this is my first time owning a Sylvester Palm so I’m not familiar with these at all. I got it on clearance at Lowe’s and decided to give it a shot, it was already looking a little dry and pale when I bought it. check out the center new growth. Some of it looks pale bluish greenish but crispy and the older growth is more green but is also yellowing on the end of the fronds. how can this palm be helped?

What to plant here? 1 2

So, I have this area on the western side of my house that gets sun from about 12:30-1:00 to sometime later in the evening (maybe 6:30 to 7:00). It gets slightly dappled sun in the later evening but mostly full sun. A few palms come to mind but they all like shade. I really want to utilize this area as it gets nice wind protection from all sides, a concrete pathway near it, eaves that create a bit of frost protection, and a nice reflective wall. I really think this is one of the best microclimates around my house, but I just don't know what palm would be good to plant here. I would prefer a palm that is rated for 9a, as I would like to try to zone push something here. So i…

What to use for winter mulch?
by newtopalmsMD- 5 replies

Here in my MD 7a location I usually add about a foot of oak leaf mulch over the roots of my trachys and sabals for the winter. I have about 15 (two cubic foot) bags of hardwood mulch that I never put down this summer. Would it be a good idea to add 3 or 4 inches of this hard wood mulch over the roots of my palms instead of oak leaves? I also cut down about 10 or so musa basjoo banana tree that I cut down for the winter. are these banana leaves good for winter mulch to put of the banana stems for the winter? Thanks

While visiting some friends in Memphis, TN I noticed a neighbor down the street who had palms in their backyard around the pool. I snapped a few pictures as I was so impressed with the size of them. I don't believe they protect them during the winter months. Can you tell me what type of palms they are? Next time I visit, I plan to knock on their door and ask about them. Thanks!

What will my Butyagrus look like in the future?
by LivistonaFan- 6 replies

I am curious how my Butia paraguayensis x Syagrus romanzoffiana will look like in a few years. Its leafs are very horizontally arranged compared to those of a normal Queen Palm. But nevertheless they differ greatly from those of Butia paraguayensis. I assume most mule palms are more upright than this one or am I wrong? Will it look more like a slender Butia or rather like a sturdy queen palm? Here is a photo the seller sent me to choose my palm (I still don't know why I took this one. Which one would you have picked?): Please feel free to post your Mule palm as a seedling and how it looks now. Maybe we can see a pattern what to look for to get event…

Any guesses as to what will survive in Texas. Here is my prediction. Virtually all palms north of Waco - DEAD. Maybe someone eeks out a Sabal or Windmill in Dallas Austin - All W. Robusta and Date palms - Dead. W. Filifera, Sabal Palmetto, and Sabal Mexicana live for the most part. Still some deaths there. San Antonio. 50 percent of W. Robusta - Dead. Some surprise and live. All queen palms dead. Some date palms dead. Probably most dates survive. Every W. Filifera, Sabal, etc live on. The infamous riverwalk mules live after enduring damage. Houston. Queen palms dead. A lot of Robusta dead maybe 25 or 30 percent Every zone push zone 9 and 10 …

Found this gem today and price was too good to pass up. Livistona chinensis with 8' or so of trunk. I haven't seen any this large for sale in the area before so I have no point of reference for price. 7 gallons typically go for $150. After tax this one was $290.

what's happening to this trachy???
by newtopalmsMD- 3 replies

I live in Olney MD, zone 7a, and it was a pretty mild winter. Tonight I went to start removing mulch and cut dead fronds and found the frond in the first picture coming out of one of my trachy's It pulled fairly easily but the end is not dark like is usually get when a spear pulls. Also the stem of the frond had the consistency of slightly undercooked pasta. The next full frond is bluer than I'd like. Also fronds are wilting and turning brown about half way up the fronds. See fronds in second picture. Other green fronds are wilty and sagging. Is this a fungus problem? or could it be something else. I did spray in the crown twice with copper fungicide and used a …

What's this on my Sabal?

Happy Sunday everyone. Took some photos last night of this white stuff on my sabal. It almost looked like webbing for insect eggs but when I scraped some of it off there was nothing inside. This area of the yard sees very very little sun so I'm assuming it's mildew of some kind but thought I'd see if it was something that required attention. Thanks! Dave Ps, I've had to reduce the quality of my photos in order for them to post so they may be a tad pixelated if you zoom in
