Washy Concerns

Hey y'all, My Washy, Dirty Sanchez - every new frond is coming in shorter and shorter. It's been going on for a couple months now. We haven't had any heavy cold snaps yet - it did drop down to the high 20s for a few hours, but this was going on even before then. Any ideas as to why? It's got some bent fronds from wind, but other than that it's been a pretty solid growing plant until maybe November or so. I don't over water or over feed it, all the other plants on my patio seem happy so I don't think it's a fungal or pest issue unless it's something specific to Washies regionally. Thoughts?

Washy hardiness opportunity :
by Will Simpson- 24 replies

I got down to 24F the night before last , and it will be well above that for the next few weeks , it looks like , so I should finally be able to find out if my Washy is hardy at 24F or if damage starts , etc. I always thought it was frond hardy to 23F , and now I will have a perfect opportunity to at least take 24F off of the damage question about its hardiness . If it handles 24F well it might look decent well into December or into January . I'll watch it over the next few weeks and see what 24F does to it .

Bought from the Orange store as W. fillifera. It took a bit of damage this winter from fungus from too much moisture as I left it unprotected in the pot. So fillifera or fillibusta?? More pictures required?

Washy or Butia...which is more cold tolerant?

Hello all:) I've been doing a ton of research the past couple of days, but could not find a definite answer...from experience or just knowledge, does anyone happen to know which will handle a lower temperature? I'm in zone 6, and this winter, we have seen temperatures down to -10F a couple times (this is very very rare for southern Kansas, but still, it can and does happen every few years) so obviously either would need heavy protection, but which is more likely to survive when the palm is too tall to place a box over in winter? I'm making a road trip to Dallas (~4.5 hour drive ) in a couple days to visit a friend, and I am planning on picking up one of either, possibly …

Washy protection :

It was already looking rough after a 20F and a 3" heavy snow . Then I had another snow which was mainly was sleet came through . Now I'm seeing anywhere from 13F to 17F within a week so I decided to put on the protection . It's just Xmas lights and a layer of blankets and some mulch at the base . I'll only need the protection on it below 16F but I might turn it on in late winter to force early growth . The top is open a little so it can grow when it gets milder . Will

Washy trunk protection

I knew that the fronds would be toast so I cut them off . Then I wrapped the trunk with incandescent Christmas lights , and wrapped them with a layer of blankets . I meant to put a bag or two of mulch at the bottom of the trunk to hold down the blankets and keep wind from blowing air under the blankets but the blankets seemed firmly down on the ground so I didn't do that , but it would be recommended because it would keep air from getting under the blankets plus it would insulate the lowest part of the trunk and roots near the trunk . My Low temperature was 6F , I think , but it might have been 7F ? Below is the protection ; the first picture is before the p…

Here's my Washy a couple days ago . It's in another gear now that I've had some 90'sF . I stopped fertilizing it for fear it'll get too tall to protect too soon . My new website has lots of girls in the pictures , and I'm selling palms now . My company is called Ty Ly ( Ty Lie ) . Just kidding ; no new company , but Shaylen still likes to model lol ! Only 10 seasons ago :

Washy update :

Eleven seasons in the ground counting this season . Someone brought it to my attention that this looks pretty much like all Robusta . I bought it as a Filibusta , but I have to admit I don't see much purple on the petiole bases and the trunk is pretty thin . I wish I had a Filibusta more on the Filifera side because I can use all the hardiness possible that can handle the humidity , and it might grow a little slower in height too . Also , the frond hardiness is only hardy to 23F , so all the fronds pretty much look bad after every winter , whereas if it were a Filibusta some years it might look decent after winter . What do you guys think ? Than…

Water and Cold Hardiness
by ahosey01- 7 replies

Wondering if anyone can share some experience on variations in cold hardiness for the same palm species in wet vs. dry soil. I am aware of a local guy here in AZ who has told me that his Bismarckia nobilis has never defoliated in dry soil in cold snaps in the winter, but that he killed one by continuing to water before he figured that out. Anybody have any similar experiences?

Water your minors… Then do it again!

I think most already know this on here… But I just want to confirm that my minors LOVE water. We have had some consistent heat (90+) in Ohio the last week so I watered my palms every morning, then we had tons of rain yesterday and today and this frond has 100% opened more in the last week because of it.

Watering advice in winter
by BeauBlues- 16 replies

Hi all! This is my first post to this forum. I'm creating a sort of backyard paradise for me and the family. We have a large backyard in Corona, CA in zone 9b. I started planting this last summer. So far I have ravanea glauca, C. gigas, Pritchardia sp., sabal causarium, parajubaea microcarpa, bismarckia nobilis, roystonea princeps, and a few others. My question is, during the growing months, when and how much to water is obvious. But right now I'm clueless. Our nightly temps are usually in the low 40's to upper 30's. Sometimes we dip down to freezing and the upper 20's. I have essentially stopped watering. My Pritchardias are looking a bit sad. I can't tell if it's …

Watering mid fall into winter.

Had some nice growth on a Trachy f. planted the second week of March this year. It’s planted in a part of my yard that gets both long direct sunlight during the summer (nearly 8 hours total, from early morning to mid afternoon), and the first sunlight in the morning during the winter (about 5 hours total, from early morning to about 1:30 PM or so). From the start, it put up new growth quickly: at the peak of summer, it would grow a new frond to completion roughly every week and a half or two weeks. Obviously, things are slowing down now, but it is still pushing out some new growth. My question is: How much watering do I need to do now and into winter? Do I …

Watering schedule for new palms

Hey all, I just had the following planted in my backyard: 2 Sabal Palmettos (around 8 foot trunks), a Butia x Jubaea (2 foot trunk), and 4 Sabal Minors (no trunk). It seems my top layer of soil is rocky clay, then below that is black clay. In any event, since the bottom of these holes is clay, how often would you recommend watering these newly planted palms? The guy that planted them said once a week because the water will just sit in the hole, like a cup. What are your all's thoughts?

Waterlogged Mediterranean fan palm

Does anyone have experience with medi's in poorly drained wet spots? I have been sweating on a flower bed for my wife this past week and I had to add a deep edging barrier to prevent the &^%x!@*! Bermuda grass from invading everything (about 5/6" in ground). Since the medi is in the lowest point in the bed, I found it completely waterlogged after the rains of the past couple of days. It drains, but slowly, and it will probably be sitting in that swamp for a day or two before it seeps into the soil (heavy sandy loam + clay). The medi has been in that spot for years and relatively uncared for (never watered or fertilized). It survived Uri unprotected, btw, s…
