Jersey Village, NW Houston 9a. Between 10-12F. Mules, Sylvestris Date Palms. Pygmys. Washingtonia. Nothing too crazy like Kings and Queens before. Not Pictured. Lake Conroe. A lot of New Palms. And several tall Washingtonia Survivors right along south shore of Lake and highway 105. Went below 10F there, But maybe along water a couple degrees made a big difference.

Starting the Zone 8b Jungle 1 2

I replanted a Bismarckia I had in a shady spot to a full sun area about 7ft from a Southwest-facing wall of the house. It was only in the shady spot for 3 days. Still, there could be some issues with the roots, and I am tentatively waiting to see if the Bizzie will get established smoothly as the weather warms up. Pardon the makeshift walls (there's a rambunctious 5 month old puppy who loves to chew up palms). Hoping to plant a Washingtonia (it's recovering from being torn out of the ground and used as a chew toy by my dog) about 8-10 feet away from the Bizzie and some non-palm tropical plants.

Still more palm babies in Beaverton Oregon...

Here's the Butia yatay X Jubaea chilensis hybrid from Patrick/Patrix, just arrived in great shape! Also Trithrinax campestris, with its sharp pointy blue-green leaves. Love em! The JxB hybrid seems more coveted, but Patrick indicated that the BxJ hybrid is faster, hardier as a seedling, and has glossy green leaves (whereas JxB. yatay tends to have blue-green leaves that are less glossy). So BxJ leaves may resemble Jubaea more in terms of color/texture, which is a bit surprising. These will go into the ground after I move to So. Oregon with its warmer/drier Mediterranean climate.

Stones and Stone Mulch
by Leelanau Palms- 1 follower

In many of the pictures on Palmtalk, I see rings of stones around the base of palms, as well as stone/gravel mulchs used in a circle around palm trunks. Esthetics/looks are always a factor, but I wonder if there is a functional role for these stones beyond a simple, attractive (moisture retaining, weed suppressing) mulch, such as heat retention. Would love to hear what y'all have to say.

Gentlemen, (and Ladies) Yet again mother nature can't make up her mind. Later this week we've got another cold front moving through. Might get as low at 24 degrees. If you're a nut like me, you've got a lot of stuff in pots out on your deck already. When would you start feeling worried about leaving a R. rivularis (almost trunking) out in the cold? What about Christmas Palm seedlings? Veitchia? For that matter, what about a Sea Grape? Pineapple? Sago? All the temp data I can find seems to have too wide a margin of error for my comfort. -Erik Nebraska 5b

Strange find inside Pindo Palm

Hi everyone, I came across some strange orange junk inside one section of my pindo palm tree. This particular Palm did have some cold damage and I did treat it with peroxide and also fungicide. There has been steady new growth which is good. I’ve also seen some issues with ants at the bottom of the trunk. This new find is just really weird, it’s almost sticky but without any foul smell. Any ideas on what it could be?

Strange queen

OK, long story short... I bought this as a Home Depot bargain bin palm for $2.97 a few years ago. It went through the 2018 freeze, was totally covered in ice & the branches snapped off from the weight of the ice & snow. Early spring that year the spear pulled, I dumped a bottle of peroxide down the hole & left it for dead. Well, it came back from the stump & it now larger that mu Yaty mule that also was damaged badly.. No Idea what strain this is, but the leaves are much latter than my Uruguay queens.

Strap leaves

Hi guys, I’m sure that this has been asked numerous times but I guess I’m too lazy right now to look for it. I keep getting distracted by the different threads while trying. LOL. How long do palms usually take before they get mature leaves instead of the thin ribbons. I have European (4 leaves), pindo or California (2 leaves, can tell which one but I think pindo because it’s growing slower than everyone), 2 cidp (5 leaves), 2 silver dates (5 leaves). Excuse the pindo/California, the grasshoppers got to it before I could spray.

Stripped down Windmill
by Las Palmas Norte- 10 replies

Here are two Windmill palms for comparison purposes that are showing a non fibrous trunk. One has intentionally had the older petiole bases removed, the other has decayed and have fallen, picked by nesting birds and only cleared to clean up the untidiness. The ones purposely removed show coloring of blues and yellow even after a year or two of being removed. Naturally fallen ones have a more plain look. I've seen it stated that removing the petioles and fiber in the colder range of these palms is not recommended. I've seen some local palms that are stripped heavily showing a smooth look and overall different appearance to this palm. Observations and comments welcome.…

Struggling Washingtonia
by Palmlex- 1 follower

Hello! I have a Washingtonia with 4 feet of trunk in zone 7, which I had to transplant due to a move. I planted it back in the ground at the new location in April of 2023. Due to the transplant, it lost all of its fronds apart from the spear. In 2023 it opened 2 very floppy fronds the whole year. Fast forward to this spring, i was also able to pull the spear out. Now it has 2 green half-fronds and doesn't seem to be doing much else. I think the hole where the spear was is around 1 inch shorter than in spring, but I don't see much happening after months and very warm temperatures. Is there anything I can do to it? Is it a goner? I'm considering replacing it,…

Successes and surprises this spring :

I transplanted a Trachy volunteer earlier in March and soon after transplanting it the spear pulled , but things are looking good now . Before : Today 4/3 My Tifton Hardy palmetto before picture to the right of Shaylen . It's actually not looking great : The spear pull problem couldn't be from cold with my Low of 14F last winter . Possibly it was damaged 2 Christmas Eves ago when I had a quick dip to 6F . It looks like some nice new growth in the center last summer , but it didn't look right this March and when I pulled on the spear it popped right out . I cut it back to healthy tissue as well .…

So I came across some volunteer Dwarf SM. They range anywhere from one/2 strap leaves to three very small fronds. I know those of any size are nearly impossible to transplant because of the subterranean trunk but what about the juvenile ones. Any consensus of size limit before it's better to just leave them where they are. Thanks

Suckering Radicalis

Seeing a bit of mixed info about whether Chamaedorea Radicalis is a suckering or running palm. Some say yes, some say no, some say sometimes! Specifically trunking form I suppose. I have what looks like a shoot coming up from a 3 trunk 5g. It looks suckering to me or was this intentionally planted this way and this a seed sprout? Does anyone have a suckering trunking C. Rad? Appears pure by the flower stalk location and height. Just want to try and anticipate this things growth for placement. Thanks for any feedback.

Hi all, And thank you in advance. I'm moving and will be putting in a pool. I have two mule palms that I will plant on two corners. I was thinking of putting mules on all 4 corners and then having shorter 2-3 feet tall in between them ish. I will provide lots of protection because I like to zone push. I have fallen in love with the look of Livistona Chinensis and Mexican Fan Palms, and was wondering if there were any shorter palms with that super glossy shine that are fan types. I will be in zone 8.
