Seedling S. louisiana
by Las Palmas Norte- 14 replies

I started these Sabal louisiana in April 2024. They went into these 3" pots and some roots are escaping though drain holes. Makes me wonder if I should plant one out at this stage. Easy to winter protect to size it up quicker. A few have developed a bulbous base while most appear in their typical form. Anyone else with seedling S. louisiana?

Seedling Sabals

Just sharing a photo of some seedling Sabal. Prior to the Texas deep freeze, @DallasPalms sent me some seeds from a few local sabals. I got them in December and they are now at the three strap leaf phase. Not bad for Oregon grown, but it's been a very hot summer. I've labeled them palmetto and causiarum just to differentiate them, but that's just a pure guess because they are probably hybrids of some sort. I can't thank DallasPalms enough for sending the seeds. The germination rate was phenomenal compared to seeds I've gotten from other sources.

Seedlings popping up in garden

Over the years, I have tried to germinate quite some palm seeds which I mostly acquired very cheap. Most of these were old seeds and did not germinate at all, except the trachycarpus seeds which did well. In the past I deposited potting soil in my garden including some of these seeds. This afternoon I found for as far as I can see some Butia and one Jubaea seedling. Has anyone else in Northern Europe (zone 8A) had spontanious germination of these species in full ground? Thought these needed more heat to germinate.

Seedlings soaking in water
by earthworm73- 7 replies

Some Jubaea seedlings came in the mail today for me today (I'm still at work). I found out today I will have to work overtime at the presidential candidate visit/rally tomorrow on my day off. The plan was for me to get all of the materials for my soil mixes (the plan was to make two separate mixes and see which one performed best for these plants) and pot the seedlings Saturday afternoon but I will not be able to do that now. At quitting time I plant to soak them into a bucket of water mixed with liquid kelp. How long can palm seedlings sit in a bucket of water before they start to "drown"?

Seeds - a lesson! A question?
by JohnAndSancho- 1 reply

Maybe it's me, maybe this is common knowledge. Twice now I've collected huge inflourecenses of tightly packed Sabals and twice they've been full of weevils. If I find a solitary tree, or trees with some space between them, no issues. Anyway, after freezing and soaking both these and a few pounds of palmetto seeds, I end up left with maybe a dozen or 2 sinkers and lots of stinkers. The palmettos, ironically the ones I wanted more, after freezing, soaking, and peroxide I just said the hell with it and sprinkled them around the tree line and in the woods. It's not like they're hard to come by or expensive. And it's not like I don't have a couple dozen seedlings already…

Seeds and what to do with them
by Jtee- 1 reply

I picked some Sabal palmetto seeds yesterday. I’d love to just throw them on the ground and let nature take it’s course but winter is coming and I doubt the seeds would germinate with nights in the 50’s now. It actually feels like fall this morning. I plan to store them in a paper bag until spring. I noticed when picking seeds that some will look old and be hollow and will crush between your fingers. Why is this, are they too ripe? I don’t want my seeds to turn into crispy nothing if I save them until next spring. Thanks.

Seeds Arrived
by Las Palmas Norte- 14 replies

Thanks to @ZPalms we've exchanged seeds. The seeds he forwarded arrived today. They are Washingtonia filibusta and Sabal palmetto from his post on them in Fayetteville, NC. They're the one's featured on a lot that is up for sale and maybe in danger of being removed / destroyed when development begins. I sent him some, fresh off the tree Trachycarpus fortunei . Hopefully they arrive soon Dylan.

Seeds arrived with a surprise

Yeah yeah, growing these from seeds is futile, but at 4.00$ a packet, why not. The surprise is top left corner, little bugger was this crawling.

So I have some sabal seeds germinating and a few of the windmill palm seeds have germinated also I just noticed. I don’t have a greenhouse or plant lights. What should I do with them at this stage? should I plant them up into small pots and put them outside to grow? lows are in the 50’s and 60’s for the remainder of the forcast( next two nights will be in 40’s) thanks for any input. This is my first time ever growing anything from seed.

seeds needing cold dormancy?
by Lyn96- 16 replies

Does anyone know which cold hardy palm seeds need a cold spell in the refrigerator before they'll germinate? It seems like Trachycarpus fortunei does; bGermination ecology of Trachycarpus fortunei (Arecaceae), a species with morphophysiological and shoot dormancy https://www.researchgate.net/publication/351467162_Germination_ecology_of_Trachycarpus_fortunei_Arecaceae_a_species_with_morphophysiological_and_shoot_dormancy And I'm wondering particularly about Chamaerops humilis and Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera, but am also curious about any other hardy palms. BTW, I thought it was fascinating to learn from that study that many many palm seeds' ovaries do no…

I have a few inflorescences that had green seeds still and were unprotected through a few recent freezes here in Texas. Are they definite goners and going to be unviable now, or are they potentially still going to be usable after they ripen (if they ripen). The Sabal Palmetto seeds started turning more dark after the freeze, but the butia capitata still looks green/unphased. I suspect I will see more reaction over the coming week from each but am curious as to what I can hope for.

Selecting a palm Tree for my area
by Ivan604- 25 replies

Hi I am from the Van BC area and i was wondering if y'all got any tips for selecting a palm tree? Hopefully someone from a similar zone (8b). Sure I've seen Trachycarpus Fortunei flourish around the nicer neighbor hoods around, like in Downtown. Never seen any other varieties from what I recall. I think the Wash. Robusta could do decently given that I winterize it.

On rare occasions, sometimes after decades, Trachycarpus fortunei will send both male and female inflorescence, essentially cloning itself. Do any other palms exhibit this trait?

Selling my Washy
by WSimpson- 22 replies

My Washy is growing about 2.5 feet My Washy is growing about 2.5 feet a season which means it will be another 10 feet taller in only 4 years . I'm not planning to sell this Washy in the next 2 years but I wanted to get a little early feedback on how much I can expect to get for it . Right now I think the clear trunk up to the base of the newest spear is about 23 feet . I can't see it being able to be transported easily if it gets too much taller . Does anyone know about how much it would sell for from my place in the northwest Piedmont of NC to places like Southern SC or the Georgia coast , or places where it wouldn't need protection ? Just…

Separating big box Livistona Chinesis?

I have three pots of Chinese fan palms from a big box store. Two have fronds as tall as 5 feet, while the third (much younger) has nothing over a foot or two. Each pot has 4 separate crowns. Has anyone tried to separate what appear to be separate plants with any success? Will there be 4 separate root systems, or will there be one root system with 4 off shoots? Are most of the plants likely to die from surgery? If separating is possible and advisable, what is the best time of year to separate them (fall or early spring) I am in zone 7a. (My plan this winter is to leave them in pots (already transplanted to 15 gallon pots) on the south side of my house and move them i…

I bought this in Knoxville, TN from a nursery about 7 or 8 years ago, and it has been sitting in a pot since then in my mother's yard in Gainesville, FL. I finally got around to separating the pups today. Here's what it looked like stilll in the pot. I think it's a 15 gallon, maybe 20 gallon pot. Closeup. Took it out of the pot and it was clear I had a job cut out for me!

September 2025 Garden Update

It's been a long while since I posted anything in-ground, but everything has been doing pretty good! The Needle Palm has been doing amazing as expected! There are now 5 suckers as there'es one more coming up in the front. The Cycas Revoluta seems to be doing pretty good after defoliation. The new flush was definitely smaller than the original size of the leaves, but it should start looking how it did last year with a bit more protection. It even has a little offshoot next to it! The tropical plants part of my garden has also done really well! Well actually not right now cuz of spider mites, but i've been trying to get rid of them lol. The Coloca…

Serenoa Recovery

Writing from Atlanta. Last summer I purchase a small S.repens from Woodlanders. They say these don't like clay. I planted into a mix of sand and small stone. Minimum temp last winter was above 20°F. I gave no water between Oct 1st and Apr 1st. Spear pulled as well as the 4 newest leaves. I thought it would die but I see now 1-1/2 new spears. Do these get better, like Trachycarpus or will I see spear loss every winter.

This thread is just to document, trial and error.. Got a couple sprouts after about 8 weeks... sitting on a heat mat in a plastic container in peat moss/perlite/hydroton. A little mold has been picked out by hand and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. There may be a few more that are buried but I don't want to poke around too much.
