Washingtonia in North Carolina

I was in Wrightsville Beach, NC this weekend and I spotted this Washingtonia, which I suspect is filifera because of the trunk size and lack of purple/burgundy on the trunk. Based on Google Streetview, this palm was planted sometime prior to 2008 and survived the 2018 100 year cold event. I've attached the weather observations for Wilmington, which is the closest I could find. Although Wrightsville is probably a tad warmer than Wilmington, but I imagine the temps and conditions were very similar. What a tank of a palm. I'm in Raleigh and recently planted two Washy filibusta from Lowes, labeled "Robusta" but I've been told they're too hairy to be pure robusta. I also plant…

Washingtonia in zone 7a with just wrapping?
by siege2050- 24 replies

I originally started some Washingtonia Filibusta seeds to grow in containers (Still waiting on Filifera to germinate). But after seeing how fast they are growing for me, and looking around the web, is it possible to protect a Washingtonia with just wrapping the trunks heavily in a zone 7a down to 0F? I am not too crazy about making mini greenhouses so would prefer to wrap. If so what kind of wrapping, would heat tape be necessary on the coldest nights with a thermostat? Also if I remove all the fronds, will new ones grow back in time to make the palm look okay each year? What is the cold hardiness for Filibusta as compared to Robusta, and Filifera and is it increased a lo…

Looks like the Washies pulled through just fine. A lot of people think it's too wet here, but they are doing great so far. Salem Oregon 8b. I haven't decided if they are filifera or filibusta. They were tagged filifera when I bought them at Lowe's.

Washingtonia protection - Pacific Northwest style.

We’re lucky here our winters don’t get too cold but we do have a issue with moisture. Because of this certain palms that are hardy to our minimum temperatures don’t do well like Washingtonia palms. This year I purchased a new Washingtonia robusta and I am helping it along through winter, I created this little structure using some plastic panels from an old greenhouse. It will still allow airflow to prevent mold and fungus and it has a sloped roof to help drain off the rain. This is the highest level of protection I have ever done for any of my plants.

Washingtonia Robusta in Virginia Zone 7a/7b?

I was thinking in March that I would plant a Washingtonia robusta here in Virginia (zone 7a/7b). Do you think I should do it? Of course, every winter (starting in early November, when tempature start getting below freezing) I would protect it. I heard they are a good palm to protect in this zone because every spring, since they are so fast growing, they come back nicely and look great in summer. That would really be an eye catcher here. What do you think?

Washingtonia Robusta issue?

Hello everyone! I have four Washingtonia Robusta (two newly in ground and two potted). I noticed after taking them outside earlier this year, that some of the leaves are starting to bend over. Even with some new growth. The Palms are still growing rather quickly but I figured I'd ask if this is a sign of a bigger issue (fungal or pest). Thanks. Brian

Washingtonia robusta overwintering
by David_K- 5 replies

Hello, i live in Europe, in Czech Republic. My place is in zone 7a/b, this year was a bad winter with low of -12°C (for y'all imperialists 10°F), usually about - 8°C (17°F). My idea is to make a box from polycarbonate, cover the ground inside the box with styrofoam, roll the tree into some light wraps and then with heating cable (64W 4m, y'all imperialists 13ft). Is this possible or does anyone have a better idea how to protect the palm? I can get a lot of materials for free. I planted the tree this week, its like 60-80 cm high.

I was in Sedona, AZ recently and was surprised to find several mature (what I thought to be) Washingtonia Robusta. Where I saw the specimens in the photo was technically Zone 8a per the USDA Map. Sedona typically sees a dozen or so freezes per year and the occasional freeze down into the upper teens. I'm curious how these palms have managed to survive these temps for this long. Can anyone tell by the photo if these are actually Washingtonia Filibusta? I'm also curious if there are any members of this forum from Texas or Louisiana who had Washingtonia Robusta that survived the deep freeze of February, 2021 unprotected.

Washingtonia robusta wind damage

This morning my heart dropped after i saw 3 fronds damaged by windy ( 25- 28 mph wind gusts) conditions. Aren't palms supposed to handle a lot more wind speeds before they show signs of wind damages ?

Washingtonia Robusta Zone 8b Oregon

I bought this Washingtonia robusta at the beginning of summer. Since then it has grown multiple new leaves. It was one of my few potted plants that I didn't move to shade during our record breaking heat wave. It handled 117 degrees like it was nothing. The location where I have it gets sun almost all day and is covered in concrete and asphalt so it really bakes in the afternoon sun. I'm excited to see how it does through the winter here.

Hi there I recently got a Washingtonia palm it was advertised to me as California fan palm but now I am having second thoughts, I would like to know if it’s robusta filifera or filibusta, I know it’s likely still to young to tell what type it is but any educated guesses would be great.
