Are there any cold hardy small trunked or stemmed palms that look good in containers other than the Chamaedorea species? Have looked at those and am going to try and grow 2 nice species from seed. Those 2 are hardy to 20F, maybe 18F or so.. Have also looked at Rhapis multifida which is (??) hardy to 15F (??) but looks hard to obtain. Looks like it could have a very nice form though with a little bit of judicious pruning. Are there any other small trunked species that would look good in a container on a deck and might be reliably hardy to 15-18F? Or 20F? That take less than 25 years to grow 1 inch? I looked at the Rhapis dwarf species, and Oh My Head... slower than m…

Small Fayetteville , NC Washy questions :
by WSimpson- 7 replies
Below are 2 pictures of the same palms that I took a couple of days ago of Knikfar's Fayetteville , NC Washys that he sent me . I'm not used to dealing with small palm sprouts like these and was wondering if the pot size , soil , fertilizer , etc , is right for these 3 plants , and generally what is the best way of getting them to a more stable size and to the summer heat without dying . I plan on putting them outside on sunny days and putting them on a warm router during nights . Is there anything obvious I need to be doing ? Should I fertilize a little now or wait till summer ? Thanks , Will

Small Sabal with papery ligules

I have a young palm in front of my house that was labeled "Sabal texana" when I bought it (at Smithfield Gardens in Suffolk, VA?) a few years ago. I assumed that it would turn out to be a 'Brazoriensis." It has (slowly) developed papery legumes, similar to Sabal causiarum. It is growing among bamboo roots and is holding its own. Hardiness at this young age is similar to S palmetto. Any guesses as to which Sabal this really is?

Small vs Larger palm for zone pushing
by mdsonofthesouth- 27 replies

Ok sorry if this topic has been beaten to death, but I am coming up short with google queries. Late last summer I planted a 3 gallon chamerops humilis I bought on a whim at HD that has been nearly unprotected (incandescent rope light around the soil not touching the plant and mulched up a little) in my zone 7a. Its doing very well and actually never stopped growing through winter. It saw brief lows bellow 15F and one extended sub 20F for a couple days with some minor burning but no pull and good growth. So a 3 gallon grown in Miami did well in z7a which seems to contradict some peoples theories. Well fast forward to last week I bought, again on a whim (see a …

Hi All, The newest leaf of my Jubaea is much smaller then the other leaves. The palm is in a pot and just moved indoors again. Could this cause the problem or can it be lack of nutrients? A new spear is emerging by the way. Thank you for any ideas or help!

snow day

Hello all! I almost never post, but I have been gowing palms all my life, have been a long time reader of PalmTalk , and have learned much of what I know about palms through this site! I wanted to share with you an interesting event that happened to me today: snow! I was raised in South Florida, but currently attend school in Atlanta, GA, so this is a first for me. Since moving here, I have been surprised at the extent to which subtropical gardening is possible, even in a less than ideal climate. Attached are some pictures of my only outdoor palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix. While snow and today's temps (28F) are par for the course with this species, I am happy to…

Snow day in Georgia today

Blue moon event today but it actually happened, anyone in North Georgia caught way more snowfall though and possibly other states nearby but I really don’t know. This is the most snow we have seen for atleast 10 years. Chamaerops will shake it off like it’s nothing but I put the frost blankets over the Sylvesters, as I have had to do every night basically for the past week or two with this unusually cold winter. Hopefully they will actually survive this winter as 2 or 3 of them out of 4 look very beat up. How is everybody holding up through the storm? Good luck to everybody else out there, at least the temperatures aren’t that cold as we have stayed above 30 degrees.

We have got a 9a winter so far. 18 degrees is said to be the low on wednsday so that would make it a 8b winter hope my palms pull through

Well winter has really hit New Mexico now. We were forecasted to get 5-8 inches of snow, but got just over an inch. Below are pictures of my Filibusta covered with snow. We've gotten down in the low 20's but with snow having sat on them all day with now warmth I expect I will lose the played out fronds. Below are the photos and a photo of our extended forecast. This is going to be one hell of a winter! The forecast for the next 30 days, and hopefully it's not accurate, foretells about 20 that are mid teens or lower. Yuck!!! At least we avoided the blizzard the plains received.

This is the first year that I’m not going to protect my needle palm until it gets too cold for it So far, a cold event brought it down to 18 degrees, and it’s currently 29 out. No damage at all on it so far. Tonight it’s supposed to get down to 19f, so it will go through basically the same temp twice. Also, I forgot about these little Washingtonia and Sabal seedlings behind it, so far the Sabal Causiarum has less damage than the Washy hybrid. Already know that they probably aren’t going to make it to next year but I guess It see how far they can go.

So far, so good

I went to my parents church on sunday, as they were being honored. Much to my surprise I spotted this little palm growing next to the church. No protection other than on a south facing wall. I suspect it will die before spring gets here, that is usually how it goes. Looks like a roebellini, but I did not notice any spines tell me what y'all think. A trooper for sure!

So few new posts

So I decided to post an update to my Mules and how impressed I am with them. Here they are right after planted June 2014. And again 14 months later. Today. I lost the one on the far right to spear pull and rot. Gonna replace it in the spring. These guys have gotten so full that I'm using them to shade my smaller potted palms from the 100 degree baking sun. Hence the pots underneath them. Wish I had thought of it sooner before they already took some damage.
