Trachycarpus Takil, Anyone?

Hey All - I picked up the palm below last weekend from a local nursery. It was labeled Trachycarpus Takil. The gentleman who sold it to me said it is more than likely Trachycarpus Nanital, which I'm equally excited about because I'm looking forward to one day having a beefy Trachy. Curious if anyone out there actually has a true, mature Takil? From my conversation with the seller of my palm, he was saying he thinks most (if not all) specimens marketed as Takil do not actually end up being Takil.

I just ordered a Trachycarpus Fortunei "Taylor" from Plant Delights Nursery. They are listed for 7b but reports are that these palms can endure much lower (official low has been -8F, yes, that's minus...). https://www.plantdelights.com/products/trachycarpus-fortunei-taylor-windmill-palm Does anyone here have experience with it? Pic from a PDN FB post.

Trachycarpus tesan. Just another thread to document growth. Seeds from Garry tsen- coldplant. In (Walmart brand) Promix, not soaked, skin on, room temp,, in <4 weeks they're pushing radicals. Planted 06Mar22. Lots more are pushing, as I was digging around, but I didn't want to disturb them too much. Here you can see four that were near the top. Minor mold but it doesn't seem to bother anything. Pick it out by hand and hit with H2O2.

Does anyone know of a flowering T.ukrhulensis (AKA manipur) in the US, or anywhere else for that matter. i would think after nearly 20 years of the seed first being made available by RPS then there must be large specimens out there somewhere. Does anyone also know the minimum temp before they suffer leaf burn? TIA Vic

Trachycarpus variants hardiness

Hi all, Early this year I purchased the following Trachycarpus seedlings: Trachycarpus Fortunei, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus, Trachycarpus “Takil”, Trachycarpus “Kumaon”, Trachycarpus Princeps “Stone gate”, Trachycarpus Ukhrulensis and Trachycarpus Wagnerianus x Fortunei. For these variants I have read various claims, the Manipur and Princeps would be less cold tolerant and the Takil and Kumaon would be more cold tolerant compared with the normal Fortunei. Does anyone have personal experience with these forms? Is the difference in cold hardiness significant? Stefan

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus (Waggie)

Hi guys, I'm new here so take it easy on me I have a 5' tall Fortunei, and a bunch of Musa Basjoo bananas planted up here (in the ground) in southern Ontario, Canada, 2 hours south of Toronto. I also have a smaller non-hybrid waggie palm in a pot. My question is, I noticed the new leave thats opening looks bleached or almost transparent. I did recently over fertilize it with a liquid based fertilizer (by mistake) I use miracle grow palm slow relese fertilizer since I can't get any of the higher quailty palm fertilizers up here. Is this somthing I should be worried about, will it flush out over time.? Also does this look like a pure wagerianus palm?

Hello everyone I am planning to install a trachycarpus (either fortunei or wagnerianus, preferably the latter) next to a wall in my garden. As I am located in 6b hardiness zone, house walls are my huge friends as they provide a bit of warm air in the winter. I was wondering how far should those palms be installed not to get their leaves interrupted by the wall? Kind regards Maciej

Trachycarpus WagnerianusXPrinceps 1 2

For some years I was trying to make this cross. After being hold up by some one who had the Princeps male flowering for some years already, I finally succeeded in pollinating my Waggy with pollen from a dutch palm enthousiast. The result off sowing some seeds in January, is so far two seedlings. I think that the seeds behave as the true Princeps, a few will germinate in the first year, and the others the years to come.

Trachycarpus weight

How does one ballpark the weight of a Trachycarpus fortunei? This lot is getting developed after the 20th, and I’d like to save this palm from the excavators, just don’t want to make it worse if I can’t lift it. It’s 8’ in total height.

I transplanted this palm back in July, since then it has not put out any growth what so ever. I'm a little concerned because all my other Windmill palms have been bullet prof when transplanting putting out growth right away.

Trachycarpus x fortunei
by Jesse PNW- 9 replies

Last year (maybe before), and this year, the local Home Depots stock and sell some regular Trachycarpus fortunei first. When those run out and they get resupplied, they sell "Trachycarpus x fortunei". My last biology class was in high school 20 years ago, but I'm pretty sure "x" means it's a hybrid between 2 species. Last year I came to the conclusion that these were fortunei/wagnerianus hybrids due mainly to the shape of the fronds. I should also mention that these are $25 for 5 gallons, which are cheaper than the straight "Trachycarpus fortunei" they sell earlier in the season. The pics of the larger, fuller one is one I purchased last year. The smaller are …

Saw this label at a big box store. Is this just the result of them not having a clue, or is it possible it is actually a hybrid of some sort. If so, why not list both species in the cross (like fortunei x wagnerianus)? The plants may have had stiffer leaflets than windmills of the same size I have bought in the past, or I may have just wanted to think that. Either way I added one more Trachy to the mix in my yard. the "Trachycarpus x fortunei"

Trachyocarpus Purchase from bbrantley Palm Farm 1 2

Visited Bryant Brantley's farm in Perry, Florida to get a larger sized Trachyocarpus fortunei. I have failed in the past with this species in smaller sizes. Decided to go big and amend my sand with heavy mulch to combat possible nematode affects. So here is the start of the story. Brantley is a really nice guy and he showed my palmy friend John and I his fields of Butia odorata. I wasn't there for Butia....had my heart set on a larger Trachy and Bryant had a few left. This one was picked and he got to work expertly digging it out.

A couple weekends ago I went to Plant Delights (just a bit south of Raleigh NC) during their open nursery day and, of course, had to check out their palms they have at their garden. So, I took some pictures and I figured I share some of them. They had quite a few different ecotypes of Trachys, but I won't bother posting those, as they all looked the same to me. Also, they had plenty of Sabals too: S. 'Birmingham', S. minor 'Savannah Silver' (which I hadn't heard of before), S. minor 'McCurtain', S. 'brazoriensis', S. palmetto 'Bald Head Island' (wasn't trunking yet), S. minor 'Louisiana', S. minor 'Emerald Isle Giant', S. minor 'Wakula Dwarf', and I think a S. eto…

Trachys & Sabals in Pots - Wintering
by ColumbusPalm- 4 replies

Hey All, I have quite a few palms in pots. As we get nearer to fall/winter, I am wondering what to do with them as I do not have a garage. I do have a wood shed but not sure if that would be warm enough for them?Should I leave them out and just put them in the shed with Christmas lights and maybe heat mats underneath the pots during the coldest weeks/days? Not sure how quickly soil in the pots would freeze but if the highs were in the 40s in the day and 20s at night, would that freeze them? That's a typical January/February here with some cold snaps here and there that may last a week. Appreciate any opinions on it.

Trachys: misleading survival rate
by smatofu- 11 replies
Hi, after last winter of the century in Texas (2021, temp down to 0F), trachies survival rate was maybe 50% (extremely rough estimate). I saw green fronds on those surviving trachies in spring and summer. In the last few months I was surprised to see many supposedly live trachies to die! Including one of mine (very healthy palm before the winter) I cut the trunk on my palm. The bottom part of the trunk was white/yellowish/healthy, the top part of the trunk had a slight brown color tint. It is a reminder how delicate palms are and that they have very small abilities to recover from stresses!!!
