Sabal Palmetto Siting

Hey Palmtalk! What do you think about this spot for my potted Sabal palmetto to be planted come spring time? This location is south facing up against my house. Full sun all year round. It can get pretty hot in this spot, over 100F many days in the soil and rocks. My grasses have gotten burnt here. Will this fry the palmetto’s roots? The rocks radiate heat in the summer and winter. The soil beneath is sandy, typical of pine forests. Full protection from wind as well as overhead protection from frost. I’m willing to protect it during extreme cold snaps.

Sabal palmetto spear pull

My Tifton Hardy palmetto strangely had spear pull . My winter wasn't bad with a lowest Low of 14F , but the new growth didn't look healthy . I gave it a tug and Bingo the spear and a few fronds pulled out . I cut it way down till I saw healthy tissue and it's coming back nicely . It might take a couple of years to look normal again though . I'm still not sure what the problem was , but I think it was possibly damage from the Christmas before last when I had a quick shot of cold air down to 6F . That next summer it didn't seem to be that healthy which led to the problem it had when I pulled the spear out ? That seems like a long time to not be healthy and for me not …

I was checking out palms being sold from PDN and saw this Palmetto they call Sabal palmetto Augusta ( I've never heard of it ) . It survived the 80's record cold . It reminded me of my Sabal palmetto " Tifton Hardy " . They also have some Miamiensis and a hardy Cycas for sale . https://www.plantdelights.com/products/sabal-palmetto-augusta Will

I got this on 6/2/2020 . Amazingly it was a pretty healthy HC Palmetto because after I planted it , it grew about 6 inflorescences out of the trunk that first year in 2020 . I guess they cut off the fronds that were growing out of it on the day I bought it , so the inflorescences were ready to grow out even though it had no fronds . It had a nice root system too , so it may have been at the nursery for over a year , and just took off right when planted . In a way it might not really be a HC Palmetto because it had such a mature root system . It just lacked fronds . It's finally flowering again . Will

Sabal palmetto vs birmingham hardiness 1 2

I thought this was a pretty good testament to the difference in hardiness between sabal palmetto and birmingham sabals. I don't think we got below 10F to 12F at my house this winter, though we did have a spell or two where we went between 2 to 3 days without getting above freezing. We had a few small snow events, none more than about 1.5" at a time. The birmingham is in the SW corner of an L-shaped bed on the south and west sides of my garage. Both are shielded from north winds by the house. Here is the difference between the two at my house given the above winter conditions:

Sabal palmetto VS Butia - Cold Hardiness

Ok, I have had at least seven people here say that Butias are less hardy that Sabal palmetto, but now I am starting to agree with them. After looking through this Garden Web thread, if you scroll down, someone in the Virginia Beach area said that it got down to 5 degrees (in a zone 8a area!) at their place and all the Pindos were fried, but the Sabal palmettos where 100% fine and were still thriving, as if nothing happened at all! Here is the link, look around the thread: http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2070958/question-how-the-sabal-palmettos-are-doing-in-vanc-and-sc After seeing this I am convinced Sabal palmetto are hardier than Butia, and if that is the c…

I live in zone 7a U.S east coast and I just found recent interest in Palm trees. I found a Sabal Palmetto "Augusta" that is for zone 7b, so how will I have this palm tree survive with minimal protection without any electricity? Give some tips how to grow and will it survive with protection on coldest days.

Sabal palmettos in Colorado Springs

Hello everyone, so I haven’t seen a lot of coverage of this nature defying experiment but some of the In n Out burger chain restaurants that are new to Colorado have installed the iconic crossed palm trees at some of their locations such as this one of Constitution Ave. in Colorado Springs (Zone 5b\6a). These Sabal palmettos appear to have large gauge pipe heating cables rapped around the trunk and close to the crown. I’m also told they have coiled heat cables in the ground around the roots. They are left completely out in the open, and appear to have been planted in October 2021 (which I think is a terrible time). I don’t know the specific minimum temperature they endure…

Sabal Palmettos vs. Mexicana Hardiness

Hey all, Just picked out a few Sabal Palmettos (~8 foot trunks) along with a Butia x Jubaea hybrid for our yard and I got to wondering, would Texas Sabals (Mexicana) be a safer bet over the Palmettos for unprotected winter survival? The Palmettos we picked out were trucked in from Florida, so I assume they lived their lives in a much warmer zone than me (8a - Fort Worth). I'm also somewhat concerned because we live in a new development and don't have any protection from the north winds. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Sabal palms and heels

I know many of us believe Sabals develop heals after being in pots. This is where their long tap root hits the bottom of the pot and pushes back up. All of my Sabals with heels were purchased that way. Everyone I grew from seed and stuck in the ground or put in as a small seedling never developed a heel until now. Sabal uresana with heel that was developed one year after planting in the ground. Thoughts?

Sabal Palms in Fuquay-Varina, NC

I currently reside here in Raleigh (Garner to be exact), however I travel to Fuquay-Varina quite often for work and last year I took some pics of a few palms planted a newly built apartment complex (The Retreat at Fuquay-Varina) behind the Wal-Mar there. I was fairly taken back because public plantings of palms (outside of Windmill palms and maybe needle) are not common here - most apartment and condo complexes in the area seem to prefer deciduous trees (and sometimes evergreen Magnolia trees) for landscaping. This is the only apartment complex like I this that I personally seen in the area that have planted trunking Sabals.

Sabal palms in New Mexico 1 2

I remember back in 2006 or 2008 driving to Las Cruces, NM (zone 8a) for work, that there were a number of juvenile Sabal palms lining the street that has all the sports fields on it back then. I haven't been back there in a while but just thought to check it out on Google maps; and while I could not locate the ones I remembered I did see this gem from July 2015, 4 years following the big freeze event. To me it looks to be a Sabal palmetto based on the size of the crown. I see no evidence, from the picture, of any seed stalks. What do you all make of it? And do you know of any other large, trunked Sabal species in NM? I believe I read that there were some in…

Sabal Palms in zone 5

Hi everyone I, I just joined the group and wanted to share with you my Sabals this is the 3rd year for one and the second for the other 3. I also have 4 Christmas palms that are in pots which I keep indoors during the winter months. I do protect the Sabals in the winter by putting up a temporary green house and wrapping the trees with some c-9 lights. So far so good. The oldest Sabal is producing fruit, my hope is to plant them and see if they will germinate.

Sabal Recovery

This Sabal was planted in the winter of 2017. It seems to me to be slow in recovering and the yellow color concerns me. Am I just impatient? Today I'm going to enlarge the circle at the base for better watering and application of nutrients. Any suggestions to help it along and form a good healthy crown?

Picked up these 2 15g sabals in need of repotting over the weekend. Keeping the top of saxophone heal above the ground surface is what’s important correct? Also so what happens to that heal with mature palms? I’ve never noticed it on mature trees.

Sabal Riverside 1 2 3

This one of the first palms that I grew from seed and even now no one really knows what it is or how it came to reside in a private garden in Riverside California. It is tougher than nails and can take hot, cold, ice, snow, drought, dampness and really always looks great. It is a species of Carribbean origin and possibly a hybrid between one of the large Cuban or Dominican species and possibly Sabal Texana, Palmetto, or Bermudana. I know the stories about the all seed growing true from the original plant and that the original plant has been lost in time so to speak and the road construction story, but all stories aside what is it really? Next to one of…

Sabal rosei - post winter storm Gerri 2024 update

Sabal rosei…. 90 hours below freezing, 9.9F ultimate low, no supplemental heat and here we are. WOW. This is a cold hardy contender, and thus far I’m rating these as DFW hardy.. I probably didn't need to cover it this year, but I really loved the amount of growth I got over the year, and didn't want to risk losing any of it. Turns out I don't need to worry! I will say that I am pleasantly surprised. The big reveal..... hah.

Sabal rosei Damage

I recently received a Sabal rosei. It has been acclimated to full sun and was doing great until I looked at it today. It appears to be spotting from cool wet exposure. I'm in Oregon zone 8b and last night we had the first significant rain since spring. The low last night was 57 degrees. I didn't expect spotting like this. Sabal rosei is not a sabal I'm very familiar. Does any one have any advice? Thanks

Sabal Sanctuary in East Texas 1 2

So I wanted to document the official start of the Sabal sanctuary here at our homestead in ETX. We are officially per the USDA zones (8b, with 9a just a county and a half away), but I don't trust any of these and put us at a solid 8a with 8b characteristics. For example, it still gets cold here (not as cold as DFW) but very little ice, and the freeze durations are much shorter. All in all, it's a great place to grow some Sabals. I'm dedicating a roughly 6.5 acre area at the back of our homestead which sits on the other side of a branch that is spring fed and flows most of the year (either above ground, or always below ground). While doing some exploring here in M…

Sabal seedling repot w/ pics

Back in August of 2019 while on vacation I collected a few sabal seedlings that had washed ashore one night after a storm had passed in Panama City Beach Florida. I have a thread on "Seeds from the Beach" that you can check out the history if anyone cares. Today I decided it was time to repot one of the seedlings and while doing so was careful not to damage the roots. I was able to snap a few pictures and thought I would share. This is still an unidentified (likely palmetto from what I was told) sabal seedling. It has been in its original pot since August 2019.
