Trachycarpus Princeps PH

My understanding is T. Princeps are found growing on limestone cliffs in their habitat. So no too hard to figure out they like slightly alkaline soil. I have one and have been in the ground for about three springs now. I haven't checked my soil (I will) but more than likely it will test neutral at best and slightly acidic at worse. What could be the potential issues with have the Princeps in soil not alkaline?

Trachycarpus princeps problem? Plus livinstona chinensis
by Palm crazy- 13 replies

Here is the problem with my trachycarpus princeps the leaves get damage from rain and cold in winter and in summer more damage from sprinkler and sun hitting the leaves….I am guessing. Anyone else having problems like me? I have two others that are flawless and have overhead protection from rain and they always look good. Doesn’t look to bad from a distance. But closer you start to see somethings not right. The dark brown damage on leaves happen last summer and deep inside the crown you can see the new damage from this winter. So today I dug it up and transplanted to another part of the garden and hopefully having some overhead canopy will help…

If I wanted to protect my windmill palm Trachycarpus Fortunii , without lights or additional heat sources how would I do so? i unfortunately do not have the option of using supplemental heat such as Christmas lights due to electricity bill. how would you recomend protecting one of these? I have many blankets and tarps so I doubt that would be a problem. thanks in advance

Trachycarpus put to the test at -2F
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 19 replies

A customer of mine in Amarillo purchased eleven reginerated windmills with 11-13' of clear trunk from me last year for a landscaping project. This winter had two very cold spells of which the later dropped the temp to -2f. The duration of the cold was intense as well with over 60 consecutive hours below 25F. Needless to say all of them were mostly defoliated, but all of them have resumed growing with more than a foot of new foliage and a few are already flowering. I have attached a few pics.

I'm asking this question on behalf of a member of a member of our Ukrainian/Russian forum. This palm grows in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in zone 6b, elevation of 1000m. The leaves of his Trachycarpus fortunei "wagnerianus" started to brown up from the middle - from the hastula area. Which hasn't happened before. He is looking for ideas why.

So I was adding mulch around the base of my trachycarpus. When I spotted these roots growing oddly. Anything abnormal here?? Its been growing there for 3 years. Only other thing of interest is that it's growing in clay. Should I add more soil and top it off with a little mulch? Thanks

Trachycarpus seed heat damage
by Rickybobby- 8 replies

Hey everyone. I’ve been trying to germinate 4 species of trachycarpus. I’ve heard and read of so many different styles to germinate. I choose baggie method and I was told bottom heat is ok. But a lot of people have said to use room temperature. So far out of 150 seeds I’ve had 5 germinate. My question really is. Did putting the seeds on a heat mat that was 90 degrees kill or damage the seeds? I mean it does get hot in areas they naturalize ? Or will they still have a chance being back at cooler temps? Side note my fortuneis were fresh fresh and the others not so sure

Trachycarpus Seed Stalks
by Jesse PNW- 8 replies

Are freshly harvested Trachy seed stalks subject to pests? Squirrels, rats etc? I assume if they're harvested (now) they need to "ripen" over the next few months before they can be planted? Do they need to turn from blue to black or dry out before being planted? I assume sewing seed in bulk, it's not worth the trouble to remove the skin/fruit? Baggy method vs communal pot? These topics have probably been discussed here several times before but the PT search engine is difficult to navigate.

Trachycarpus seedling hardiness

This year I will have several Trachycarpus seedlings in the ground scattered throughout my yard face the (sometimes mild, sometimes a little brutal) winter in Alabama zone 8a, very humid. Has anyone tried this before or does the seedling perish in the cold? A lot of them are 1-2 leaves only. Or if others have succeeded with this I may even plant some more. Last winter low was roughly 16F.

Another rainy day here in southern Ontario. It was a good day to move a bunch of trachycarpus that I germinated from seeds out of British Columbia into their own container. I found these neat trays that house 21 seedlings but fit into a 10 x 20 plant tray. It’s very convenient to use and the bottoms of each planter has a large hole. So I put some clay pebbles on the bottom for drainage and to help keep the roots from making their way out. My seedling media is coco coir and perlite. It seems to be doing well for these palms

Trachycarpus seeds, peeled vs not peeled
by Palmy13- 1 follower

Hello, i was just curious about the difference between peeled and non peeled seeds of trachycarpus fortunei, the little black fruit or flesh or whatever you want to call it surrounding the seed itself. I’m not talking about the dry part which is more of a thin thin skin on the outside that goes away easily, but I’m talking about peeling the black part of the seed with a small knife or fingernails to get through the “flesh”. Does it speed up the germination if you peel it or does it just hurt the seed itself, maybe it’s better to leave the black part on. I’m going to do a little experiment here where i try sowing both. Does anyone have any experiences with this and can sha…

Trachycarpus selection for 7a turning to 6b

Hello palmers, sorry for any problems, i am new to the Palm Talk. When i got interested into palms, my friend got too and he wants a palm for his garden. We've chosen trachy because they are most hardy and pretty beautiful. I dont really know which one is best. We live in the Czech Republic in the one of warmest climates in here. The zones here are 7a-6b, just something between. I wonder which one type should i get and how big. The orders are fast growing and tree-type. I thought the Tra takil bageshwar is good but, uno, i dont have palms on garden yet so and i am planning to put outside a washie, not a trachy Thank you for help and feedback.

Trachycarpus Species
by ahosey01- 7 replies

Can anyone offer insight into an appropriate trachycarpus species? I have a spot in my yard that would be nice for one. Soil is on the heavy side in that part of the yard, but is good. Marginally acidic. Sun is direct until 10AM in the summer, then filtered and shaded the rest of the day. Wind is almost nonexistent, and especially down there, which is sheltered by large, mature mesquite trees. Its the coldest part of the yard. Morning lows will hit 25F with regularity there, and we’ll see 17F once a decade or so, albeit brief until the sun crests. Daytime winter highs are 70+ typically. Summer is obviously a bear with 110+ over 40 days this year, but that…

It has probably been done before, but could we get an updated Trachycarpus species list. Please list in order from least to coldest hardy with associated temps the species will first start showing damage, and also for the ultimate low one could reasonably expect survival with major damage.

Trachycarpus takagii x Trachycarpus wagnerianus
by Jonathan Haycock- 1 follower

My fathers Trachycarpus takagii (T. wagnerianus x T. fortunei F1) flowered for the first time this year (female). He pollinated it with Trachycarpus wagnerianus and seeds appear to be developing. Hoping the resultant backcross (T. takagii x T. wagnerianus) will stiffen the leaves further (more wind resistance) without significantly reducing leaf size. My father and I had a little chuckle at the irony because he was the first out of the two of us to produce a cross. I emigrated to Australia in 2019 to follow my dream to grow a wider variety of palms and create hybrids, yet my father (who’s not that interested in them) beat me to the punch in the UK.

Can I grow one of these in afternoon shade with a lot of moisture, or is it a goner in the hot summers?

Hi, In my Trachycarpus Takil, the growth cone died after spring frosts. I took the frozen cone out, dug it out of the ground and put it in a pot. I have recently checked the roots and they are ok (i noticed new white roots). Nevertheless, the palm tree has not been sprouting new leaves for half a year ... Can you recommend something to starting growth in this palm tree?

Hey everyone i have sowed these 3 species. Actually and a bunch of fortunei. But the other 3 the info isn’t as available There in baggies. Should they be outside in the shade so they get cool nights and warm days or in the house at room temperature? I’ve had them on some bottom heat for a week but think maybe that is wrong for these. Also chime in on fortunei I had them in my palm room but it is always 77 to 80f so today I put them outside in the shade. Too date have germinated everything g pretty much but a trachycarpus of any kind. Thanks everyone.
