Trachycarpus ID

I bought this Trachycarpus early last year and after having it for a while I felt that it may be a Fortunei x Waggie due to its very dark green color and shorter stiffer fronds. I have a waggie planted in the same bed and see a lot of similarities between the two. However this palm grows at lightning speed, easily the fastest one I have producing 2-3 fronds for every one of palm beside it and others planted around the garden. It also has an exceptionally thick trunk that is getting fatter with age. Is it simply the natural variation within T.fortunei or maybe a T. nova, or other? First pic is of the multi tiers of fronds, the second shows the color much better and t…

Please see the attached pictures. They are supposed to be Trachycarpus wagnerianus. As you can see the palm is about 2’ tall and should not be putting up an inflorescence, much less one like shown. Any anyone tell me what I have? I am located about 30 min south of Asheville NC. And this palm comes through the winters just fine.

Trachycarpus Latisectus

Yesterday I got this Latisectus x Waggie Hybrid. A friend got a few of these from Jeff St Gelais. My friend has a older one and it looked very nice. Anyway I have never had a Latisectus nor a hybrid until yesterday. I've read not as cold hardy. Was wondering about growth rate, size etc. I'm sure as a hybrid with a male Waggie it will have a different characteristics. Since im in 7a it will become a house plant for a months out of the year. Thanks for any info.

Trachycarpus latisectus growth rate?

Did a search here on this species and most if not all threads are about cold hardiness. Thinking about getting one of these but ones available that can be shipped are usually 1 gallon size so was curious if anyone here could report on the speed of growth on this species of Trachycarpus. I know GOOGLE research of culture of this palm says "fast" but more curious what members here have experienced with this palm, especially when kept potted. Seems like this is the least cold hardy of the species so won't plant mine in the ground to protect. Scott/Omaha

I have had two of these in the ground for over 15 years now. I have never seen a flower in all these years. How long will they take to flower? They have gotten quite large & I'm about ready to dig them up & sell them as they really aren't very appealing to me...

Hi everyone, My potted trachycarpus is pushing out new roots on its side. The roots are pushing the old petioles down towards the dirt. I was just wondering if I should cut the old petioles or will the roots eventually push through. Thanks!

Trachycarpus oreophilus showing some minor leaf damage from a cold spell a few weeks ago. The cold spell lasted for about 10 days with temperatures around -5 for the coldest nights and many days with highs of only 2 or 3°C above zero...Nothing very extreme but everytime we have a cold spell like this it shows that my oreophilus is not as hardy as my other Trachycarpus species I grow.

Trachycarpus oreophilus - any experience
by Chester B- 5 replies

Is anyone currently growing Trachycarpus oreophilus? Any info on how they do? I'm assuming its a pretty easy care palm. I looked at the freeze damage section and not a lot in there. It may be the nicest looking Trachy out there and I would like to try one, and I have access to one but I think it will come with a hefty pricetag.

A post on here said to me that you can't overwater Trachycarpus in pot with drainage so I've been watering everyday during a 25-28degree heatwave, and I potted a princeps hybrid up placed in full sun and did the same thing, what happen?the leaves turn yellow and tips turn brown,is this overwatering,if not what am I doing wrong?

Anybody know if Trachys can be found in tropical places like Hawaii (Dry like Kona or wet like Hilo) or Miami? This is more of a random question that came to my head. My guess is 'no' due to constant heat and no cold breaks. Apparent they don't so well in FL because of nematodes down there. (Per the thread below) Happy Friday

Trachycarpus princeps germination
by ShadyDan- 21 replies

I received 40 T. princeps seeds in the mail today. Seems to be no general consensus on the the best method for germinating these yet, at least what I was able to dig up. Wondering if anyone who has germinated them before can impart their wisdom on me? Specifically, what medium did you use, bottom heat yes/no, did you pre-soak the seed before hand etc… I’ve grown many, many T. fortunei seeds before using a 50/50 peat perlite mix with no bottom heat. I figure the T. princeps might benefit from bottom heat as they come from a slightly warmer climate?
