Sabal Palmetto Help
by MAPalms- 10 replies
It would be great if you could help with this Palmtalk. During the winter, I pulled in my palmetto into the house on the coldest nights, when it got below 15 degrees. The rest of the winter it spent on the screened in porch which has a roof. I kept it right up against the house. I placed it outside around 5 days ago. I just came back from a trip and the fronds seemed to have yellowed. It was in the 60s every day and didn’t go below 40. The spear is still very secure and the smaller spear is still green. What is wrong and what can I do to help? All help is well appreciated.

Sabal Palmetto in 7b - 30+ years from seed - is finally trunking

I collected seed from some Sabals at Vistana resort near Orlando around 1990 when we took out daughters to Disney World. One has been in the ground in Williamsburg, Virginia since a few years later (after growing it out in pots). It's in partial shade, but it has taken all of 30 years to begin to form a trunk this year. Here are a few shots. Not a way to quickly establish a palm, but it is rewarding to see if finally beginning to get some vertical growth.

Sabal Palmetto in freezing rain
by BobStrauss- 8 replies

So I’m in San Antonio, TX and last spring had a sabal palmetto put in my backyard. Maybe 6’ of trunk to it. We’re getting freezing rain/sleet at the moment, it’s around 30 degrees now and dropping. Lows over the next few days shouldn’t drop below 20. I know these are cold hardy but mine was only transplanted last spring, the fronds are dropping - simply unhappy or weighed down by the ice, not sure. Should I be concerned, or try to protect somehow? With even the cold hardy sabals, should I expect to lose foliage in situations like these?

Sabal palmetto in north central ark?
by Hellbilly33- 10 replies

I bought these palms as seedlings off eBay, “mccurtain” sabal minor, after about 3-4 years in the ground they have now started to get tall and elongate? About 2’ taller then other sabal minors I bought from a guy in North Carolina. These palms have survived very cold north central Arkansas, I cover them when real cold and run Christmas lights on them. I thought everything I had was sabal minor and I only wanted minors along with a few needle palms, I don’t really like trunking palms mainly because they won’t grow here in zone 7A. I hate to cut these down but I planted them too close to my deck and too close together for trunking palms. Any idea what type of palm these a…

Sabal Palmetto in Outer Banks NC
by Palmy Pal- 3 replies

I have solid evidence of Sabal Palmetto growing in the outer banks. Specifically in Hatteras NC. I have seen them before in the wild years ago but didn’t take any pictures and I had regretted that ever since. So I decided to go back to the site to take pictures as solid proof they still exist on the island. I have indeed 100% confirmed these are Sabal Palmetto palms that are growing there. The palmettos were limited at the site and were in much smaller amounts than the known Sabal minor that exists in the same area. I plan on writing a article on this visit with pictures and more information. I will make a new topic for this article so things don’t get flooded out. Please…

Sabal Palmetto In Zone 7b? 1 2

Is it possible to grow a Sabal Palmetto in zone 7b? I have seen a few here but I have no clue if they are protected. I was thinking I could protect one (if I get one) for the first two years to let it get established and then leave it unprotected for the rest of the winters after. What do you think?

There are some small unusual hardy palms for sale this Spring at Plant Delights nursery. I picked up one of each. The trachy is described at "a Vic Silver cross of Trachycarpus fortunei 'Wagnerianus' x Trachycarpus nanus." The Lisa is said to be 68% true to the desired phenotype. It's an opportunity to pick up some rare hardy palms. I don't think they will last long.

Sabal palmetto on Inks Lake, Texas
by Meangreen94z- 4 replies
There are a few(4-5) Sabal palmetto growing on the shoreline of Inks Lake within the Texas state park. The park has owned the land since 1940 when the Lake was being created. So I’m guessing the seed washed up from elsewhere on the lake. They are growing under a tree canopy, although a few are about to break through. Nothing terribly exciting to look at aesthetically but interesting given the area. They probably saw 2-3°F in 2021.

I can't decide between S.Palmetto and S.Mexicana. I'm not worried about the cold hardiness since I'm in 8b/9a . I know the Mexicana grows a bigger canopy but I'm afraid it could grow too big . Which one is faster growing ?Which one would you prefer for SoCen TX climate ?

Sabal palmetto PNW growth

Just wanted to share some springtime growth on my S. palmetto planted on Vancouver Island. Two days ago, I marked across the active spear to and older leaf with a sharpie to track its growth. Much to my surprise, it moved quite a bit in just two days. While the weather has been nice here (daytime highs 18-22C, lows 10-12C), its by no means been Florida hot. I’m looking forward to see what kind of growth I’ll get once the real summer weather arrives here! Luckily, I’m still young so I might actually see a trunk on this before I die! I know it’s probably not exciting for some of you folks in the SE, but for me and my comparably heat-starved climate I’m going to chalk …

Sabal palmetto progress after 4 years in the ground from a HC Palmetto : ( Sorry about the double post )
by WSimpson- 0 replies

It's ready for its 5th warm season in the ground from a HC Palmetto . I got it from Loyd's Nursery in Wilmington , NC . They say they get them from a northern Florida source and they should be more cold hardy ? So far so good . Early June 2020 : Shaylen modeling it a few days ago . The lowest few fronds were bent down by a wet 2" snow 3 winters ago . It's the only measurable snow here in 6 years , so you can see how a small wet snow can damage palms . Luckily it's outgrowing that bent down look as I prune off the ugly . It's losing that HC look as it starts to trunk up too . It's been in the ground 4 warm seasons . This summer will be its 5th…

Sabal Palmetto Seedling Alive!
by PalmTreeDude- 11 replies

So most of the Sabal palmetto seedlings that came up last Summer are alive with the tops burned. But some are still completely green. Only a few were lost. We had a crazy long period of below freezing here this winter. It is currently in the 70s. Here are some. I did absolutly nothing with these protection wise.

Sabal palmetto seedling variation
by Chester B- 2 replies

I received a bunch of Sabal palmetto seedlings a while back from a fellow PT'r and now that I've had them for a while I'm noticing two different phenotypes. The first is short and chunky, with no visible petioles and short fronds, the other is a taller version with long fronds and long petioles. Grown side by side with no difference in care/culture. It's a 50/50 split among the seedlings. Is this typical? At this point I'm assuming in time they will all look the same, but wanted to get some feedback from people in their native range. One of each for comparison.

Sabal palmetto seedlings under camellia
by Manalto- 6 replies

I'm assuming these are sabal palmetto seedlings, since a mature specimen is only 10' away. Before I pull them out, I thought I'd ask if there's any reason to to "rescue" them, and if so, how it should be done. I'm in that small minority (on the Gulf Coast, at least) who think palmettos are beautiful plants, even in youth and, although they're not rare, more of them would be an improvement.

Sabal Palmetto Siting

Hey Palmtalk! What do you think about this spot for my potted Sabal palmetto to be planted come spring time? This location is south facing up against my house. Full sun all year round. It can get pretty hot in this spot, over 100F many days in the soil and rocks. My grasses have gotten burnt here. Will this fry the palmetto’s roots? The rocks radiate heat in the summer and winter. The soil beneath is sandy, typical of pine forests. Full protection from wind as well as overhead protection from frost. I’m willing to protect it during extreme cold snaps.
