Syagrus oleracea, a pretty palm.

I found this Syagrus oleracea growing in a garden in the county of Tibagi. I like the look of this palm with its slender trunk. Tibagi is located 80 km from my city , more northern location, and at lower altitude (750-850m) so ir´s warmer. I saw also a mature king palm (A.cunninghamiana) growing in the same garden, so its not very cold there, but Syagrus oleracea must be a somewhat hardy palm. How much cold it can have? Do you know?

Hi guys I’m fairly new to tropical gardening started this year in may and I have fallen head first into things and have learnt an awful lot already . I've already got 2 x Phoenix canariensis - 5x Washingtonia robustas and a trachycarpus fortunei which are doing really well but I want to branch out abit and see what’s possible to grow in my area! I live in the coastal village of Braunton in North Devon - south west England zone 9b and I’m around 10 meters above sea level . I'm wondering if anyone has tried to grow syagrus romanzoffiana santa catarina (supposedly hardy queen palm ) and Phoenix sylvestris (silver date palm) I’m the south of England or even Engl…

Hi all, I found a seller on eBay offering seeds of Syagrus romanzoffiana var santa catarina. Have you had any experience growing them here? Is it too finicky with the heat requirement here? Thanks.

I have been trying to get some more info on Syagrus Schizophylla x Romanzoffiana (AKA: Coconut Queen Palm) but there is not very much out there. Does anyone here have any experience/knowledge about the Cold Tolerance and Maximum Height of this tropical looking beauty?

Syagrus species for Phoenix, Arizona

I'm looking for advice on growing other species of syagrus other than romanzoffiana here in Phoenix. I really like the look of a queen palm, but only the ones I've seen in CA and FL. By the end of our hot summers, they just look tattered and burnt no matter how much water and fertilizer you give them. I did plant a couple 15 gallon mule palms (butia x romanzoffiana) this spring and I'm excited to watch them grow. Does anybody have experience with any other syagrus species or hybrids that do well here in our desert climate? Coronata? Picrophylla? schizophylla? Comments on cold hardiness and growth rate would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

Sylvester palm in 8B

I bought a small Sylvester in march of this year. I bought it from a dealer in TyTy, Ga, which is about 80 miles inland from where I live. I believe I might have made the wrong choice when choosing a date palm. I was initially going to buy a Phoenix dactylifera, but I was told that they weren't as cold hardy as the canary and Sylvester. He even said the dactyliferas he planted on the island (which is a full 9a/9b) didn't make it through the winter's cold. So, I ended up buying the Sylvester, taking his word for it, and also because the canary's growth would have outgrown the spot I was going to put it. After buying it, I started to reading up on the Sylvester. Now I …

I had 12 palm trees planted in my yard about 3 weeks ago. Within days 4 of the palm tree fronds started turning brown as well as the center bulb in two of them. The remaining 8 had some mild browning of the lower fronds as well. Need help on what to do next. I have gone around each bulb and pocked around with garden hoes and there was no obvious air pocket. I am watering them constantly using a drip system and every night creating a puddle of water using garden hoes. The fronds turned brown so fast that it was hard to believe.

Has anyone been by Griffin Auto, in Valdosta, Ga, and seen how the Sylvester’s faired this winter? I’m not positive how cold it got, but I wouldn’t be surprised if dipped in the high teens a couple nights.

T fortunei var Nova - when you plant
by RyManUtah- 1 follower

Long story short, I received some seeds from a batch of “nova” from a trusted friend in Vancouver. The seeds were very old, and gifted to me instead of being discarded. I got one to germinate this winter. being my narrowest spot by the driveway, this is where I want to plant to nova. It will take up the least amount of space, trunk wise. Sunburned, but now fairly acclimated to the sun. Any chance this seedling could be planted out now, like a young Washingtonia? my thinking is it will get the best growth in the ground. Would it be best to wait for palmate foliage before planting? Newest spear is green in full sun, and has grown since movin…

This is going to be one interesting Trachycarpus hybirid. Wagg being slow growing and Nanital being faster-bigger grower. Not to much to say about it now since it still a young palm, but will go outside in the ground come spring. Notice the leave are upright.

My palm I bought as T. Fortunei 'Winsan' is blooming for the first time this year at 7 years old. Is it a male or a female? I thought it was a male bc of the yellow buds but some of them are green too.

T. fortunei characteristics
by Las Palmas Norte- 2 replies

As most of us are aware, T. fortunei has some variations, also positioning can alter their appearance. Sometimes a combination of these factors can produce a palm that looks like this. If my memory is right on this one, I grew it from a batch of 'Nanital' (India) seeds. It stands 11' tall with 5' to 6' long petioles and droopy fronds at least 3' in length. The trunk isn't very tall so it's overall height is mainly from the crown. Being grown in mostly shade with competing bamboo and it's 'Nanital' parentage, this is the end result. Cheers, Barrie.

T. fortunei from seeds question.

Hi I am in a zone 7 (Atlanta-GA). I have acquired fresh T. fortunei seeds. I am going to plant 25 seeds in 2 large bins (made to grow vegetables) (Total 50 seeds). I was going once they reach decent seedling size to plant a batch in my yard and keep the other batch in my garage over winter to plant in the spring. I keep plants in my garage over winter every year and they do fine so I figure the seedlings should be fine too. Now for the batch that I am going to plant, I am a little nervous as they should be ready by the fall but by the time winter comes they might not have developed enough roots in the ground to survive. Need your thought about that if yo…

T. fortunei growth habit
by Fallen Munk- 15 replies

After my Trachycarpus fortunei went through the ice storm, it changed growth habit this year. It went from having long petioles to a more typical growth habit. After the storm weighed it down, the petioles bent and the fronds were against the ground. I ended up cutting all almost all of them because the tree was all broken up. And this is how it grew back. Before After

T. Fortunei purchase root ball size
by Palmlex- 6 replies

Hey everyone, My budget allows me to get a $200-ish Trachycarpus Fortunei at the moment. Since I'm ordering online, I don't know exactly how the plant will look, but I have 2 options available and I was wondering what you might think. Both palms are around 4-6'. What would you get? A smaller palm with a larger root ball? (Assuming it fills up the container it comes in) or a taller palm with around 10 inches more trunk but a smaller root ball? Thanks, Alex

T. Fortunei smaller new growth
by SRJbb99- 5 replies

My T. Fortunei is sprouting new leaves that are smaller than the ones before. I have another one about 10 feet from this that doesn't have this problem but has a negligible amount more shade than this one. It has been in the ground about 3 months, Zone 8B in Dallas. Amended clay soil with sandy loam. Full sun. We've had the wettest fall months on record so that could be a part of it. Thoughts? I've never seen this before

T. Fortunei with creeping trunk

Hi all, I discovered and joined this community today and I have a question regarding my Trachycarpus that I purchased years ago. I noticed that this palm, which was sold as “Fortunei”, has a sort of creeping trunk. I haven’t seen it before at any other Fortunei, does this happen occasionally? Or could it be that I bought another variety of Trachycarpus, for instance a Takil? Please see some photos of the palm below, also notice the photo from 2017 that I found (I had the idea that its growth went quite slow). For what it’s worth, I’m located in a 8a/8b zone. Thanks in advance! Stefan
