Odd Cocoid Hybrid
by buffy- 1 follower

So I have this cocoid hybrid that's supposed to be a Buju or Jubu. It's been in the ground for 5 years or so, shady area, slow growth. But this bad boy is different. There are two odd characteristics that suggest Syagrus blood. Check it out. From a distance, it just looks like a robust Butia. On closer inspection all the fronds show plumosity and the fine point armament of a some mules. The pinnae are actually a little wider like Jub. It's fascinating. It lost its spear with the 8F low this winter, but fairly unharmed otherwise. What do y'all think? My best guess is Buju X Syagrus.

Some new palms!
by mdsonofthesouth- 3 replies

Got some new additions! Essentially they will be part of my gardens "backbone" of hardy plants. Don't mind the dirt and lack of mulch, waiting on the soil to settle better before I do the final covering.

Hello this a Mediterranean fan palm was planted on august 2017 and made it through the winter. Should I expect to see new growth on the other trunks, and can I spray peroxide to prevent fungus?

Hi my name is Kevin and I am the owner of Island Wide Palm Trees, we are located on Long Island in New York. We sell palm trees as far south as Virginia and as far north as Massachusetts. Here is pictures of one of my customer's Windmill Palms that have survived the past 4 winters. This spring will be 5 winters. You can not ask for better then this. The best way to keep the trees alive is to have a good wrapping system. We have an amazing wrapping system that you can see on our website. https://www.islandwidepalmtrees.com and here is a link to our Facebook video we posted last year about these trees. (wrapping and planting is extra right now) …

I know people use liquid copper fungicide on their palm fans. Can this be used to drench the soil to get to the roots? If not, what does everyone use for root treatment.

It Is... Dead!
by PalmTreeDude- 1 follower

So my Washingtonia robusta appears to be dead now... Two of the three spears pulled. I pulled them out and sprayed the inside with hudrgren peroxide and it fizzled like crazy! The only reason I am not taking this little probably dead palm out is because there is once spear that did not pull. Do Washingtonias ever regenerate spears like Windmill Palms? Either way, this palm was an experiment. It was protected on the coldest days.

Plantation season is just about upon us...

...and these guys are just waiting to go in the ground. Waiting on a rhapidophyllum and minor too, and looking to get a few fortunei too. But everything is ready and waiting for the cold spell to be over so they can enjoy that red/brown clay! Dont have much hopes for the cycads, but curious to try them in the better microclimate a d see how they do. All 4 totaled out to maybe 25 or 30 for 4 plants so not a terrible loss. The cerifera was looking much better a week ago, but started to hate life inside and in a pot. I am facing WNW so these are facing ESE sorta and 100% blocked from bad juju winds that come from the west and north.

How to revive palms with spear damage?
by Swolte- 1 follower

I have a JxB F1 and it didn't quite like this year's winter in College Station Texas despite some protection. Now, it did appear to sail through the exceptionally long-duration freezes (lower than 20 F for long hours) in January with very little overt cold damage. I was mightily impressed as I planted it in the ground as a 5 gallon not even a year ago in a windy spot (the diameter of base has grown a full inch since I put it in the ground). However, it has been raining ever since and I noticed last week that the spear and another new frond started to turn yellow (see pic). None of the older fronds appear damaged at all. So, I am in emergency mode. I can't quite pull…

Either way it'll be a job laying it down and picking it up, But Im on well and not ready to invest in a big boy irrigation just yet. What do yall use for ornamental irrigation? Ive used them all but curious as to what yall use. We have a utisol clay soil.

Transplant shock(not)
by John Derek- 4 replies

Be Leary of buying plants online with promises of a guarantee. I got this one as a Christmas present from an online seller in Georgia. I received two and must admit they looke pretty bad and appeared burnt. I kept them inside protected from the cold winter temps. In less than one month one appeared dead. I asked for my guarantee to be honored and Tytyga said in six months this one would be fine. So no replacement! I won’t buy another palm from anyone else but Joe in Texas.

fastest-growing trunk
by Sandy Loam- 10 replies

Can anyone tell me which of the cold-hardy palms has the fastest-growing trunk (in a humid subtropical climate)? By "cold-hardy," I mean at least as hardy as a Sygraus Romanzoffiana. Please don't say Washingtonia Robusta. I can't grow those in my region because some fungus or disease is attacking them. Thank you

I have two in the ground. Both were wrapped like a burrito with 1.5ounce frost cloth, temp dropped to 8f per data logger 25ft away. First one is younger and incurred more damage and will grow right out of the damage without issue.

Size of Fans
by Rothbardian1- 0 replies
I bought a couple of robustas last year that had about an 8’ trunk. The guy I bought them from said that he got them from a guy further north from where I am (about 100 miles). They didn’t have any fronds in them when I bought them, and they had a very small root ball. I babies them last year, but the size and length of the fans were small and short; noticeably more so on one than the other. This year, we had a freak snow and ice storm. The first in about 20 years for my area (southeast Georgia, zone 8b, but in the very edge of 9a/coastal South Georgia). So, my question (hypothesis): Will repeated defoliation affect the size of the new fans and length of…
