Do Florida Grown Palms Do Well In The Carolinas?
by PalmTreeDude- 1 follower

Since a lot of palms are grown in Florida and shipped up north, do palms grown in Florida do well in the Carolinas? For example, if a palm (let's say Butia, that has experience nothing below 30 degrees F) is shipped from Florida to somewhere like Myrtle Beach, will it end up burning in the winters?

Windmill (Trachycarpus) form,
by Las Palmas Norte- 8 replies

This Windmill palm is a bit different to what is usually seen, at least around here. I've seen similar but not with thick heavy trunks such as mine. Typically these grown in more shade than normal will exhibit elongated petioles but this measures out (petioles only) at 5 feet in length. Nearly all the leaflets droop at about ¾ of the way out, giving it another look. Tape measure extended to one foot. Cheers, Barrie.

I have a friend who is building a home on Amelia Island close to Jacksonville, FL. Getting close to start making the landscape plans. Please lets hear your recommendations of palms that will definitely thrive in the area. These are not people who would be willing to do anything extra in the winters, so try not to zone push with your suggestions. Thanks. Moose

Windmill Palm- Prongs turning yellow
by Allen G- 20 replies
- 6.4k views
Help- I have an 11 year old 25 ft Windmill palm in backyard at waters (Lake) edge. The lower prongs (leaves) are turning yellow but top and new growth is green. In South Carolina we had a colder Winter than usual- so there may be some cold winter damage. I have never fertilized the palm except for today- I used Miracle Grow Palm Fertilizer which is balanced in Nitrogen, Potassium and Magnesium. I suspect that there is a nutrient deficiency-either Potassium, Magnesium or both. Should I use any thing else? Perhaps a liquid. Also, should I cut off the yellow prongs. Miracle does not have Boron in it . Thanks

I have two small Brahea clara, one in a pot one in the ground here in NC. Since I had a back up, I was going to let the in ground one fend for itself during the winter and see how it held up. I chickened out and threw a 5 gallon bucket over it right before the snow, but no other protection except for that one week of bucket cover this winter. I don't know what kind of thermal protection the bucket gave it, but after a week of temps that probably came close to killing (if not) my mature Butia and caused some Sabal palmetto in the yard spear pull, it wasn't even totally defoliated (one leaf left standing). It's not pretty and it lost part of one emerging spear, but it i…

Mediterranean Fan Palm Question
by Rightstuff15- 3 replies
I recently purchased a Mediterranean Fan Palm from a local nursery. As you can see in the photo the fronds are stretched out. I'm assuming this is due to the amount of light it received through it's life. I prefer the fronds to be more compact. Is there an issue with trimming them off and letting them start again?

Livistona Saribus vs. Livistona Decora
by Sandy Loam- 1 follower

If I have to choose between Livistona Saribus and Livistona Decora, which one will give me a trunk that people can seriously walk underneath within five or six years of growth from a 3 gallon pot? I far prefer the look of Livistona Saribus, but I am worried about the nasty teeth on those petioles when children are around. Eventually the leaf bases can be removed from the trunk, but not until the tree has some height and the dangerous parts are well overhead. Also, how likely is it that a Livistona Saribus frond will fall on a person below? Isn't it a tree that really has to be pruned manually before the old fronds will detach from the tree?....or will a littl…
