Greenhouse Heating

Hello everyone. I have a problem. I have built a Greenhouse this year to put all my palms and other tropicals in. It's about 16ft wide, 20ft long and 10ft high. I am planning on installing eventually a 220/240V line or Natural Gas line but will not be able to get that done this year. So I will need to use 110V Heaters. Has anyone had experience and/or has some recommendations as to which heaters I should get? planning on keeping temps around 50-55F at night if possible. Greenhouse is insulated well especially around the End walls. The coldest it got here in Central KY last year was about 5F but only for a few nights. Most of the time the lows were in the mid 20's an…

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about doing a thread highlighting the palms growing in and around Myrtle Beach. Of course the area is littered with sabals but I wanted to focus on the butia, washingtonia, trachy, phoenix, etc. that are sprinkled around. There are some well established, mature trees around here that look like they've been doing well for many years. Question is, would you guys rather have the posts broken up by type of palm or just throw everything into the same thread? Let me know and I'll start throwing pics up. Thanks!

I stumbled across these quite old Mexicana in an odessa neighborhood a few weeks ago. This small subdivision has them planted throughout and there are plenty of seedlings and juveniles that have grown through the years. The tallest specimens are roughly 20' CT.

Well I've caught the palm bug and lemme tell ya, it's been taking me on quite the ride. My property didn't have much in the way of landscaping when I purchased it, just a few small flowering bushes, etc. Nothing exciting, nothing tropical looking. Although the lot wasn't eye catching, it did give me a blank canvas to work with. As a brief overview, I've added some trees to the front yard but didn't do any structural changes. The back however, has received a retaining wall with 3 large planters built into it. This area extends from my concrete patio and serves as both additional patio square footage as well as an area to add some palms and whatnot. Here's what I've …

BuJubaea unhealthy fronds
by LivistonaFan- 7 replies
I bought this ButiaXJubaea F1 about two months ago online. I knew that it had extremely stretched fronds (there were some more, I did cut many of them in the last weeks), but considering the price tag and size of the plant, I ordered it nevertheless. First, I repotted it (though there were just few but relatively healthy roots) and after two weeks in part shade, I then put it in full sun. But instead of making more compact, darker green fronds, the new ones look even worse than the old ones. Do you think it was too long in a very shady position and needs some time to regenerate or is there another problem? Sry for the bad quality of the phot…

Mystery seedling

About 2 years ago I dumped a bunch of dirt and ungerminated seeds in a rubble pile. I was cleaning the area out and uncovered this little gem. I had so many different types of ungerminated seeds that I’m not sure I’ll ever know what this little guy is. Most of the seeds were Sabal species with some Uncommon Trachycarpus species possibly other cold hardy species as well. Any thoughts??

Advice for Mule Planting Location
by DAVEinMB- 2 followers

Good morning everyone. I just picked up a couple of 65 gallon mule palms and wanted to get some opinions on planting location. I know there are a ton of factors that go into how cold tolerant these plants are and I have no knowledge of their specific genetics. As the crow flies I'm about 5 miles off the coast in the myrtle beach area, zone 8b. My plan was to plant them in an open area of my front yard that receives sun all day long, including early morning sun. I could put them in a more protected area which may provide a better microclimate but I'd rather keep them out in the open. As a side note these palms spent over a year in containers on the nursery's lot howe…

Tips for Sabal "Louisiana"
by NCFM- 2 followers

I potted these sabals about a month ago and they don't seem to be doing too well. I ordered all three of them online from a palm nursery in Florida and they did arrive with a few wilting/discolored fronds. What worries me is that there has been little to no improvement in their condition since. I water them once every 1-2 days, make sure they get plenty of sun, and I potted them in well draining, palm specific soil. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but any tips would be greatly appreciated. (BTW: I plan to overwinter them inside in pots and then plant them in the ground next spring if they're still alive) Here's a few pictures of them:

Root Exposure on Trachy
by Backpain- 5 replies

Hi Everyone, My wife and I are new to palms (and new to the forum). We moved to the Upstate region of SC from Kentucky about 8 years ago and thought we'd give a few a try here in USDA 7b/8a. Here is a really nice Trachycarpus Fortunei we bought and planted in the spring of 2017. It has done well, growing at least 2 feet in height since. We noticed some weeks ago that at the base of the tree on one side, there appears to be root exposure at ground level. At the s ame level on around the trunk, it does not have this appearance. Our first guess was a chipmunk or a vole was eating away at the bark to expose and feast on the roots. We wrapped the base of the t…

Growing a Canary in 7a (and Hi it’s my first post)

Greetings, IPS! I’m a new user here .. and SO excited to have found PalmTalk :-) For the last 15 months I’ve been zealously growing my first outdoor palm!.. a Phoenix canariensis in the mountains of Western North Carolina (2000+ altitude) Zone 7a. So far the trunk has been growing steadily! But keeping this palm happy has taken some strategizing... Last winter, I wrapped the trunk in xmas lights (clear 25W incandescent) followed by a complete layer of Agribon frost wrap which acted as a insulating blanket, keeping IN the heat from the lights. The string was also on a timer which came on each evening around sunset, and I maintained this system for the entire…

Sabal Palms in zone 5

Hi everyone I, I just joined the group and wanted to share with you my Sabals this is the 3rd year for one and the second for the other 3. I also have 4 Christmas palms that are in pots which I keep indoors during the winter months. I do protect the Sabals in the winter by putting up a temporary green house and wrapping the trees with some c-9 lights. So far so good. The oldest Sabal is producing fruit, my hope is to plant them and see if they will germinate.

Where to buy palms in Atlanta area?

Hi I am just getting back into the hobby. I don't want to go crazy this time as in past years buying like a nut. I visited big box stores yesterday and was surprised at the fact that they mostly have nothing beside Majesties and parlour palms. In past years tropical or hardy palms were legions along with some bananas. Even pike nursery had hardly anything and what they had is so expensive. I know of Randy's nursery in Lawrenceville but it's so far from me, I will have to visit it only when I am closer for other matters. I am in Cherokee county if this matters. Thxs for your help Pat
