Portland (Zone 8b) T. Fortunei Height?

Afternoon everyone! I found some very tall, full-figured T. fortunei in Portland, OR when I was driving by recently. Well ok, I took the photos in the fall of 2019 so I'm a little late (my apologies). I've attached some photos and the google maps street-view link (which, arguably is slightly dated) here: https://goo.gl/maps/afhGzkTjNrYzEUPQ6 Can anyone guess the height of them? I would love to know. Its inspiring seeing palms this size this grow here. IMG_6999.HEIC IMG_7001.HEIC

Medjool in Mobile?

In May, I put four date seeds in a pot that were left over from the end-of-the-semester pot-luck picnic I always have with my students. (I have a good percentage of students from the Middle East, who always bring the best food.) Three of the four seeds sprouted, the largest has two straps about 18" long. Today I planted the biggest one in a spot where I imagine (probably long after my demise) a stately date palm will stand and look fabulous. I was surprised at the length of the root. It's late December in Gulf-Coast 8B Alabama, meaning that we could be in for some chilly temperatures in January and February. (The three seedlings have already come through the high 20s (F) …

This afternoon while walking the Piedmont Trail (off Strawberry Road) in Greensboro, I stumbled upon a couple dozen or more sabal minors growing in a swampy area parallel to Lake Brandt. There were volunteers coming up everywhere, along with several older palms. My guess is somebody threw some seeds along the trail or planted a couple and they reproduced. Greensboro is around 80 miles west of the fall line, so pretty far away from the native range of dwarf palmettos. Here are some pictures I took: I also saw some of what I think are Southern Magnolias coming up. Here they are:

I had heard a couple of years ago about Spanish moss growing out in the blackwater cypress creek in Wendell NC, only 10 miles from Raleigh. Originally I had assumed it was carried there by birds as the actual range of Spanish moss starts somewhere along the Neuse River in between Smithfield and Goldsboro, and birds are known to carry it inland. I finally got the chance to kayak out there and I found it, clumps of it. I only managed to grab 1 picture, there were smaller clumps in lower branches of the cypress trees as well! Some still green! It could only mean they reproduced rather than bird drop off! Thoughts? We really need updated maps on plant/animal ranges. …

In august I received three sabal minor "louisiana" palms in the mail from a grower in Florida. They were shipped bare root and were in transit for approximately three days. Once they were dropped off at my house, I promptly planted all three in large pots filled with a mixture of palm/cactus soil and regular miracle grow potting soil. My intention was to overwinter them in my garage (under a window that gets plenty of light) and then put them in the ground this spring. However, by november two of the palms died off, the spears browned and were able to be pulled out of the rootball, along with the browned fronds, very easily and were "slimy" at the bottom. I still have not…

NW Louisiana Butia

Today while out and about I found these around 12 foot tall Butias. These are probably the largest I have found locally. They are in front of a closed down Sonic drive in. I collected 56 plants from around the base of it. We had an 18 degree night already over late fall, but these girls are obviously tough as nails.

Thick trunk (Jubaea x Butia)
by swolf- 4 followers

Most of the Jubaea x Butia F1 are thick-trunked (if this base has fully expanded). Not to west.coast, pure Jubaea proportions of course. Early indications in loosened leaf bases make me think this cross will eventually present a clean truck. A few more vertical feet would probably make for an optimal ‘specimen palm’. What do you think? I’ll need a professional partner with the right equipment/experience to handle such heavy palms. Standard 5 ft. shovel leaned against trunk. This palm has more recurving fronds than some of the others.

Temperature inside windmill protection box
by Tom Ace- 4 replies

Hi Folks, With guidance from users of this forum and some videos I have seen, I have prepared my 4' windmill for its first winter in the ground in zone 6B Connecticut. Current setup was made using stuff I had already - scrap lumber, some 1" R5 rigid foam insulation on 3 sides, and a tarp covering the 4th side for now. There are openings on the bottom of the box for air to get in, and the tarp is old and worn out so it has some holes for ventilation too. c9 lights inside with a thermocube ( I left 12 lights on the strand at 7 watts each). I'm curious about the temperature inside the box. My sensorpush is showing frequent temperature swings in between 35 an…

Rotting Queen Palms

I have 4 Queen Palms planted in front of my house. The other day I noticed that 2 of them were rotting in the trunk. Other than the trunk rot they look really healthy. I just bought the house 4 months ago so I don't know much about these particular palms. From what I can tell all the other palms in my neighborhood look very healthy. What could be causing this? Everything missing from the trunk is what I very easily pulled off by hand once I noticed the soft part on the tree. I'm not worried about saving the tree. I think they are too close to the house anyway. I just want to know if it is something that I need to worry about spreading to my other palms? Can I plant a new …

Chamaerops Humilis Growth 1 2

Just wanted to share this to see what you guys think. Back in April of this year, I decided to transform my overgrown backyard that the previous owners of my townhome had planted as a very town and country/english garden theme. In early April I cleared the entire yard down to the ground by hand, down to the soil. I decided on a design, implemented it, and created the first slightly raised planting bed with flagstone. I used a combination of native soil, which is basically red clay, mixed with generous amounts of organic matter, sand, and bark. When I planted my oldest Chamaerops I had been growing it in a pot for about 2 years. It was pla…

It was a record tying cold for us early November with very unusual cold so early in the year. We have since had a few weeks of 70-82F weather so all the damage is showing. This storm had 36hrs of 20-40mph wind and the first morning we dropped to 22F and only warmed to 38. The second morning was a very heavy frost and dropped to 21F. Cycas Diannensis burned Cycas Revoluta x Micholitzii on left, Revoluta x Debaoensis in center, Diannensis on Right Panzhihuensis x debao on far left, bifida , debaoensis and then another hybrid that I can't remember off the top of my head. Here is an interesting group of Cycas Taitungensis. They are …

Sabal Palmetto 8a?
by Dartolution- 3 followers

So I've been fooling around with the idea this year about ordering some 7-10ft tall (clear trunk) palmetto palms from Florida, and having them planted in my yard. There are several palmettos around the Birmingham, Alabama area here and there. I am 30 miles south of Birmingham and across the highway there is a house with 3 of them in their front yard I believe. Good tall, established ones at that. There is also a nice established one on HWY280 in Superior Grills parking lot. At least, I remember 1. Anyway. I was wondering what the general consensus would be about having a palmetto in 8a Alabama? Tips? Tricks? Sources?
