Trachycarpus fortunei - Yellowing fronds question
by Mrslowpwr- 7 replies

Hello everyone. It's my first time posting. I received my first windmill palm for christmas. I had done a little research on these, mainly being the only palm to survive up here in Michigan. However I have some concerns. Currently this one is in a southern window. The first week i watered it 2 or 3 times ( I did only 3 or so cups of water). Yes the drop pan had water in it afterwards. I have since realized I need to hardly water it during the winter and learned about using distilled water and flushing the soil. The room it is in has a humidifier running all day and night with temps 65-69F. My concern is the yellowing on the fronds. I've read that old fronds die off…

Here are some pics of my volunteers. They're under 3 older parents, on a south-facing wall of an unheated garage. Starting about 5 years ago, I've seen more each year. They were under leaf mulch, but for the past 3 years they've been exposed.

Howdy! here is an update of my PS produced JXS. Obtained 2020. Pictured today, 5/21/2022. Sure hope it turns out to be a real thing of beauty. Treating it with extra micronutrients as it seems to require it here after a cool February, then putting out new leaves. So Far outdoors it has seen 22F and 1/4 inch for about a day with no problems in a large pot. It is really starting to take off now, reaching for the sky more like a Syagrus, instead of being like a short Jubaea for its first year. Please post and share your JXS. I imagine being an F1 they will be variable and look different in different parts of the country. Trunk Detail. Hoo…

Saw this in Charleston. Looks like these palms the owner planted under their crape myrtle are getting much larger than anticipated lol. Or, maybe this was intentional. Either way, very cool

Lots of new growth!

I don’t remember my growing season being this good when I had some cold hardy palms 15 years ago. Everything is loving this Ohio summer. This Trachy (maybe Waggie hybrid) was planted on June 17th. It has now fully pushed out a new frond and has one rapidly opening. Didn’t expect it to settle in so quickly but am happy I’ll get some good growth this season. June 17th Today Minors flowering and pushing new fronds. Needle growing much faster than I thought. Second frond of the season almost open. Nate

Thankfully this will only last 2 days. The needle palm box has 150 mini lights running 24 hrs and one set of c9 (25) hook on a thermocube. 2nd picture is Saturday morning inside the box...the sensor is at the bottom left corner far from the bulbs 🤞🤞🤞 3rd is Friday at noon and the temperature continued dropping throughout the day.🥶🥶

Cycas guizhouensis in Myrtle Beach?
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

I know I've been making a lot of threads about how well certain plants would do in Myrtle Beach... This one is a little bit different. I want to try something that isn't a palm but looks like one here in Myrtle Beach. Yes, I know about the Cycas revoluta, they are just everywhere here. I realize that Cycas guizhouensis is cold hardy to 8b which "technically" means I could do it, but I know that isn't always the case. Since there isn't that much information about this Cycad, it is hard for me to get any information about its true climate, not just USDA hardiness zones. So does anyone know if it could live in this type of climate? If it can't, is there any other Cycads that…

Long Island, NY Sabal Palmetto's Cold Advice
by Holloway727- 7 replies

Rough night last night here. My 2 Sabal Palmettos were doing great going into their 3rd summer in ground. Both growing and established pretty well. I do box and protect them with C9's and last night the thermostats in both boxes failed. I assume they blew the internal breaker from being on so long and never getting up to temp. we saw a low of 0f and -21 wind chill. By far the coldest night in the past 5-10 years here that I can remember as I'm about 1/2 mile from the Long Island Sound. I believe the boxes lost heat around 2am and I wasn't able to catch it until 530am. we I finally got into the boxes and got the lights back running 1 Sabal was at 7f the other was at 10f go…

Sabal Growth Rates Riddle
by Cosmo- 7 replies
- 2.6k views
Years ago I planted 3 container grown Sabals, supposedly all the same but I'm no expert. I buy on looks and they were pretty and sold as hardy for our area. Good enough for me. There was no difference in top growth. Palm #1 the largest was planted in what I would consider an urban environment - between the patio and pool deck. I figured that would serve to restrain the growth being right beside the pool gate. I was wrong, dead wrong. It is the largest and most beautiful of the 3. Palm #2 is nearly the same size, doesn't have to contend with concrete and stone but must compete with a 35+ year old ash tree. Both 1 & 2 receive 4-5 hours of direct sunlight each d…

Zone 7 Update
by GregVirginia7- 7 replies
Good morning! Don’t want to be boring on such a beautiful day but wanted to update on my zone 7 palms here in Northern Virginia. So far, no long, oppressive stretches of heat, somewhat cool nights, beneficial rains…not your typical NOVA experience… Named it Sasquatch…it’s trunk is about 9 feet tall now and that furry top 2 feet reminds me of a Sasquatch head. I do think it’s genetically engineered for the winter cold. It’s been a great palm. Sunny, wetter Needle… Shady, drier Needle… Brazoria really busting out and I’ll have seeds for the first time in 8 years or so…will definitely sprout some and share some if the damn sq…

Trachycarpus Species
by ahosey01- 7 replies

Can anyone offer insight into an appropriate trachycarpus species? I have a spot in my yard that would be nice for one. Soil is on the heavy side in that part of the yard, but is good. Marginally acidic. Sun is direct until 10AM in the summer, then filtered and shaded the rest of the day. Wind is almost nonexistent, and especially down there, which is sheltered by large, mature mesquite trees. Its the coldest part of the yard. Morning lows will hit 25F with regularity there, and we’ll see 17F once a decade or so, albeit brief until the sun crests. Daytime winter highs are 70+ typically. Summer is obviously a bear with 110+ over 40 days this year, but that…

Hard to find locally my first Brahea armata. Not exactly the best climate for them but there is one in Seattle and one in Salem, Or that are surviving. I’m told it’s hard to build up the number of fronds as soon as one is produced another dies. I’m going to try in a hot spot with ample water and palmgain.

When to put Windmill Palm from 10” pot into ground
by Gaga Iowa/Arkansas- 1 follower

Hello! I moved here from Iowa and need all the help I can get with palms, which I love! My first one froze in the winter of 2021 after having it for a short 8 months. We live in Arkansas zone 7B. March of 2022 I bought a Windmill Palm in a 10” pot thru the mail. It has been doing amazingly well so far! It has sprouted several new fronds. My question is when do you suggest we put this baby in the ground? As you can see we do not have prime soil! It’s a lot of rock! She is still in her 10” pot she came in. Should we plant it this summer, fall or wait till next spring? And please give us any suggestions and guidance as far as planting and then ferti…

It’s that time of year again yay! My sabal palmettos lived through a low of 7 degrees from the snowpocalypse. Only problem is ice or snow bends down the fronds and they don’t straighten out. I have about 6 sabals with crowns from 6’ - 10’ and was quoted $500 to tie up the fronds. Thinking if I get a crew to tie them up I can wrap them and untie them myself when needed. the cost is painful though. Any others do this winter prep, and if so how much $$ did you pay? what really sucks is this is just for a few days. I really don’t want to spend the dough to keep getting them every few weeks until we get out of winter.

Livistona chinensis "trunk hardy" here!
by mdsonofthesouth- 7 replies

So been watching little spears come up which was expected, but I never thought the "big" trunks would too! So essentially my protection was for roots and did nothing for trunks, growing points and crowns. This clump saw many single digit temps last winter and was exposed so its been through some stuff! I originally gave up on it and now Im curious as to what the long term is!

Figured I’d post these for posterity. The bigger one is an odorata that I planted 6 years ago. The smaller is an eriospatha from 3 years back. They look pretty terrific after this last summer.

Located at Natius Nursery in North Houston. No other trees around so It’s likely a full sun location. Interested to hear people’s thoughts. Did I mention the trunk is like a pencil, so thin!
