Chamaerops Humilis Cerifera Browning
by romeyjdogg- 4 replies

Hello all, Had a question regarding my newly planted Blue Med Fans. They have been in the ground about 3 weeks now and the oldest fronds appear to be browning and I'm wondering why. I watered them maybe 3-4 times the first week, then 2 or 3 the next week. I have clay soil with a mulch bed, so I assume they've been keeping moist. Perhaps I'm watering too often? They came in 5 gallon pots, if that matters.

Sorry for the tease... But someone in the US must have one that has flowered by now? I have 2 of a reasonable size with the largest one having over 7ft of trunk but yet to flower, I was convinced it would this spring but alas.... nada. It would seem they need to get to over 7ft trunk similar to takil before they flower? But I’d like to be proved wrong. IMG_4313.MOV

Hi there folks, im new to this but i would just like to pick your brains over a situation i have. I have very recently (about 3 weeks ago) just planted a Phoenix date palm of an age of 10 years old, i dug it out of a garden myself but i think now i might have made a mistake regarding the roots. Where it was you would wonder how it done so well giving that the tiny box it was in on top of shilly stones which where on top of a weed membrain! I planted it the following day in a prepped hole and tucked it in with john innes no3 compost, watering the roots in stages as i built up around the roots and levelled it off. Now it has lost its perfect spines on the leaf tips, thinki…

It’s an interesting time of year. We have days in the 60s then days like today. It is too early for my complete winter protection but still put some Xmas lights around the trunk for good measure. It’s amazing how bummed out the windmills look when they are bent. My neighbors think I’m crazy, anyways, enjoy! Big 1: Windmill Small: Needle

South-Central USA Serenoa Population?

If anyone has photographic proof of wild Serenoa repens and/or formal documentation of them in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana or Mississippi, I'd like to know. I believe they're real, but finding wild ones isn't easy even where they're widespread and common and for people knowing where to look. In my recent catalog of palm species native to every USA state/territory, I listed Serenoa repens as present in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, which a commenter questioned. Multiple sources cite Arkansas and Louisiana as the western boundary. There's also a discussion about the likelihood of a wild Tennessee Sabal minor population, and I'm convinced that at least …

Clustering Palm ID? (Central Texas)
by Dwarf Fan- 4 replies

In-N-Out burger in Killeen, Texas after the freeze of 2021 replaced all their fried Mexican fan palms with Sabal Palmettos. I was in the drive-through today and I noticed a clustering Palm that looks like it could be a Sabal… (I thought maybe a Nannorrhops ritchiana but that is way too obscure right maybe a Sabal minor?!?) I am guessing it isn’t anything too exotic but I was just checking to see what you guys think this is? (The smalls clustering Palm in the foreground.)

So, I unwrapped the blankets, lights, bungees and bucket from my recently planted Trachycarpus fortunei (less than one year in the ground). It looks good. If you protect yours, when do you remove their winter coats? Now debating if I should plant all the others in the Spring and do the annual protection (for at least a few years). Protecting this one took all of 10 minutes but it's only five feet tall now.

My now 7 year old Trachy survived that brutal January freeze in zone 7b Philadelphia, pa area. But, mostly all frons are fried. It is pushing up new frons, so i know it's OK. I think my wrapping was insufficient this year. Any expertise on fertilizer, and any other care?

Medjool in Mobile?

In May, I put four date seeds in a pot that were left over from the end-of-the-semester pot-luck picnic I always have with my students. (I have a good percentage of students from the Middle East, who always bring the best food.) Three of the four seeds sprouted, the largest has two straps about 18" long. Today I planted the biggest one in a spot where I imagine (probably long after my demise) a stately date palm will stand and look fabulous. I was surprised at the length of the root. It's late December in Gulf-Coast 8B Alabama, meaning that we could be in for some chilly temperatures in January and February. (The three seedlings have already come through the high 20s (F) …

I was at Juniper Level Botanic Garden in Raleigh, NC, which is the garden of Plant Delights nursery. I saw a great example of a mature sabal Louisiana that was about 8ft tall. I haven't seen many examples online so I figured I'd share. Based on the Plant Delights cold hardy palms blog post, I'm thinking this was planted around 1999,

Butia After Severe Freeze

Anyone having any luck with pure Butia in central Texas? Initially several of the largest in the area looked like they had some green in the center. However, now more than a month later they look worse. These experience around 5F. I must have had too much faith in their cold hardiness? Should they be trunk cut now that the green is fading? I am asking for someone who has 7 nice ones that is hesitating. Copper fungicide applied and last checked a couple weeks and only 1 spear pulled then.

Looking for input. I have a 9' and 11' Trachy windmill in 45 gallon pots very heavy got them late a very good price. should i plant or put them in a warehouse i have? I can keep the temp at 40 45F its radiant heat in floors and keep it dark so it would be like they were protected but inside a warehouse like a big box. i'm afraid if i plant them this late they wont be acclimated and when i protect and open in spring they'll be toast. Thank you so much for any thoughts? I'm zone 5b 40 miles up from 6a. Thank you

European Fan Palm care

Hello guys, Here's the info I gathered from multiple sources. Please review and add something/disagree with somehting: Light Plant your European Fan Palm in an area that receives full-partial sun (4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day). European fan palm grows in partial sun and partial shade. While it may grow slower in the shade, the fronds will grow slightly larger than when it is grown with more sunlight. They can thrive in full sun to full shade, with fronds growing a bit larger in shadier areas. The European Fan Palm grows best in full sun. Light: Requirements at least 4 hrs of direct sun a day. Offer the pot a quarter-turn every we…

One of my Sabal Minors has completely different fronds from the other's. They are larger, stiffer, not as deeply divided, and they have strange folds. I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't a different sabal like sabal x brazoriensis.
