by Phoenikakias- 4 replies

Anybody knows when exactly a true filifera blooms in the mediterranean Europe and whether filibusta blooms in same region more irregularly or at different time? Are there also other differencies regarding i.e. size and color of inflorescence? Also after germination, how many years or decades does it take for a true filifera to bloom for the first time in this region?

Will Needle Palm Suckers Flower?
by PalmTreeDude- 4 replies
- 1.2k views
This is probably a very basic question, but I have a nice sized Needle palm with a larger center trunk and smaller suckers all around it. Will the suckers ever flower like the center trunk will? And if they do flower, can the suckers polinate the other suckers and trunks flowers and produce viable seed? Thank you for reading.

Pygmy Date Palm
by ThaRage- 4 replies

Just curious if anyone has used the box/green house method with Christmas lights and thermocube for a Pygmy date Palm. I’m in zone 7a Nashville TN. I’ve been successful with several washy, windmill, and dwarf palmettos but just planted a Pygmy date Palm in April of this year. It’s growing like crazy but scared it won’t survive the winter covered. Any thoughts or suggestions? also is anyone else in my area growing palms? Very rare to see any tropicals around here even though our climate really isn’t that harsh with a little TLC.

Sabal Minor and New Member

Howdy All! Ran across this site as I was looking into hardy (semi-hardy in Indiana) palms. What a wealth of info! I feel like the Bee Girl from the Blind Mellon video (and I'll bet you'd never thought Blind Mellon would have been referenced here) when she spotted her like-minded friends. Anyway I decided to take a break this week and go hunting diamonds at Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas before heading to the FL panhandle tomorrow. I thought it might be of interest that I saw a Sabal Minor in Clark County AR while zipping thru in the car. It was growing close to the road at the edge of a pine forest. From what I've read on the site, I know they grow further South…

Question about Phoenix Sylvestris
by Sandy Loam- 4 replies
- 1.6k views
I am bringing this thread back to life from 2015 because I wanted to ask about a type of Phoenix Sylvestris that I have been seeing lately. Below is a sample photo taken in Gainesville, Florida. I have seen a lot of these in commercial plantings over the past year or so. They look like a regular Phoenix Sylvestris, but they have a slimmer than normal trunk, and fronds which are more yellow than usual. Am I mistaken? If not, could there be some element of hybridization going on here? If so, what exactly? Just curious - thanks.

Sabal minor seed viability
by siege2050- 4 replies

I had some seeds I bought this last January and college was so hectic I did not get around to planting them. Can anyone tell me how long Sabal Minor seed will remain viable for? I figure they were probably already a year old when I purchased them.

Cycas x Daebongensis
by Carolpalms- 4 replies

My cycas has gone thru 17 or 18 degree weather in a pot. We wrapped the bottom. I don't think the entire plant is dead, but the fronds appear dead. Fronds are all yellowing and appear fried. My question, can I cut all these fronts off down the the base or should I leave these fronds alone. I wouldn't know when to cut. That advice would also be appreciated. thank you, Carol

Sabal palms and heels

I know many of us believe Sabals develop heals after being in pots. This is where their long tap root hits the bottom of the pot and pushes back up. All of my Sabals with heels were purchased that way. Everyone I grew from seed and stuck in the ground or put in as a small seedling never developed a heel until now. Sabal uresana with heel that was developed one year after planting in the ground. Thoughts?

Fertilising palms in winter
by Jamil Habib- 4 replies

Hi Folks, As winter approaches us in the northern hemisphere, thought I would ask the group a question on the theory that fertilising palms a little bit prior to winter makes them stronger to deal with cold temperatures. I have large palms in the garden that benefitted last winter from this approach albeit I got lucky as the winter was very mild. I did wrap my queens and Washy’s with fleece around the crowns and will follow the same approach again, and will probably fleece the ParaJubaea too. Here is a view of my garden and any recommendations would be greatly welcome. IMG_2141.MOV IMG_2184.MOV

When can I put my zone 9 palms outside?

Hello, Should I wait until the temperature never drops below 50F (10C) or it's fine if, say, one night it drops to 40-45F (5-7C) but in general it's 50F+ (10C+)? Currently our average day temperature is 70F (21C) and average night temperature is 47F (8C). In a few days I will have: Majesty, Cat, Sago, European, Windmill, Pindo, all in pots.

Chamaedorea Radicalis seedlings

Hey y’all Earlier this spring DoomsDave was nice enough to send a million radicalis seeds, some were germinated in pots while other were sown into the garden before I applied mulch for the season. Now that it’s been a few months I don’t exactly remember where they all are, but a good number of them are sprouting up. But I’m wondering if you can tell if they’re going to be a trunking vs non-trunking variety right from the first leaf. it appears some of them sprout up and shoot out one large leaf while others shoot out a forked leaf

Was it really my fault and will it survive? (Mule Palm)
by LivistonaFan- 4 replies
I purchased a Butyagrus online in Spain and after 4 days in its parcel it arrived here. The leaf on the left and the spear in the middle each had a "white spot" (plant cells which cannot perform photosynthesis?) at the leaf base and they were extremely wobbly. I assumed that this was because of its time in the parcel as it certainly was warm and dark in there and therefore the palm could have pushed weak growth during this time. Furthermore it was in coco coir and had basically no roots which is why I have re-potted it very carefully in a slightly bigger pot with better soil. Due to a short heatwave which started the next day (37°C) the mule palm was in filtered shade beh…

Today, I went out and one of these older petioles had flopped outward already. There are only 5 leaves (counting the spear) on the palm. When I inspected the flopping petiole, I saw brown at the base. There is also brown on another leaf base There brown goes all the way through the leaf base Full image of palm

North Texas Nannorrhops

I mentioned (in another thread about Sabal mexicana) some mature nannorrhops I saw several years ago in Paris TX, when I was driving through. Rather than post more about them in a thread about Sabal mexicana, I thought I would give them a thread. Here they were the week between Christmas and New Year, 2012: The quality isn't great because I didn't have a great phone camera back then. Anyone else have experience and/or pics of nannorrhops in zone 8 or colder they would like to share?

Mystery Trachycarpus spots
by steve617- 4 replies

I've had this palm for about 1 year. It's going to be very nice. The plant that produced the seed of mine was thought to be t. latisectus x probably waggie or Fortunei. It was crossed by a waggie which mine came from. Anyway I've kept it inside during the winter and now have it outside. Has lots of brownish spots. I've added palm gain a couple days. Besides that it looks very healthy. It's also a lighter green than most my other Trachycarpus. Thanks for looking.

Chamaerops Humilis Cerifera Browning
by romeyjdogg- 4 replies

Hello all, Had a question regarding my newly planted Blue Med Fans. They have been in the ground about 3 weeks now and the oldest fronds appear to be browning and I'm wondering why. I watered them maybe 3-4 times the first week, then 2 or 3 the next week. I have clay soil with a mulch bed, so I assume they've been keeping moist. Perhaps I'm watering too often? They came in 5 gallon pots, if that matters.
