Hey All, I think a few of us bought these, but is it too early to tell if I really have a Birmingham? I am finally getting a new leaf and it is indeed very blue, more so than my minors, Brazoria and Louisiana. Makes me hopeful it’s really a Birmingham. Anyone else have thoughts on it or experience identifying? Thanks in advance - Nate

Hi, we had three windmill palms planted in our yard March 2020. The middle palm is having trouble. It continues to put up new in fronds, but they turn brown shortly after. The other two are fuller and produced yellow flowers this year. We live in Wake Forest, NC. what do you think is happening? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

I planted this Needle Palm in July of 2018... protected it through winter and in early spring of 2019, the new growth started dying... the new growth in the summer seemed to be stunted and yellowish in color. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong ?

Hey! I’ve recently rescued a group of three cocos nucifera I found laying on the floor without any care at a market here in Mexico City. After I got them I got curious if there was any possibility of growing them given that the city is at 7,500 ft of elevation more less and I ran into some interesting cases in neighboring cities where they grow at basically this elevation with little trouble. Maybe the fact we are inside the tropics has cooperated! Does this mean it’ll grow here? the most interesting case in my opinion are this palms growing at 1960 m over the sea level in the neighboring city of a Queretaro, which is north of Mexico City and more prone to get cold f…

At a house in the SE Jacksonville area. I know the owner so nobody was alarmed haha. They’ve been in the ground since around 2017. I almost thought these were coconuts! They looked flawless even after the deep cold we got a week or two ago.

Windmill Palm recovery
by Jcalvin- 4 replies

Living in the very extreme part of SE Georgia, Windmill Palms really aren’t a “go to” palm for the area. Most of them, unless grown in the shade, look pretty bad, IMO. And even then, Windmills don’t do well with the nematodes that are in the Sandy loam here. Anyways, about 4 years ago I saw a pair on Facebook Market Place that an old guy in Hoboken just wanted to get rid of. They were grown under a huge live oak, and they actually looked really healthy. Both of them had a 4.5’-5’ trunk, but they were full of fans about 4’ long. So, I dug up as much root as possible in the middle of the July heat, loaded them up, and planted them in two different shady spots in t…

Just thought I would share some photos of this really amazing garden we have here in Portland. It shows what can be created in our climate and is a good source of inspiration. The creator of the garden owns a specialty nursery and has since moved to the house located on that property and has begun a new transformation there. https://www.oregonlive.com/hg/2018/01/sean_hogan_cistus_nursery_pdx.html

Today I noticed some grey fuzz around the center part of my sago, I assume this is some form of fungus. There were rolly pollies crawling around in it as well. Is this any cause for concern? We have been getting quite a bit of rain here lately, perhaps that contributed to the fungal growth? Plant appears to be otherwise healthy:

Trachycarpus fortunei 'Nanital'

Trachycarpus fortunei ‘Nanital’ to me is one of the most beautiful of all the hardy trachycarpus. The leaves are so big and wide they almost look like another palm species. This picture doesn’t do it justus but those that grow this palm will agree it awesome. This is the only one I have it’s a male palm. Also check out the orange pot, thats a canna australis I overwinter and put outside a week ago. The leaves are not really alive but the flower bud is….Thanks for looking.

Hole in my Sabal
by Keys6505- 4 replies

I was weeding today so I was crawling around the backside of one of my S. Mexicana and noticed there was more boots hanging off the back than the front. I initially thought it was just squirrels but upon closer inspection I noticed what seemed to be a deep crack. I poked around and a small area felt soft so I stuck a short stick in the hole and it went all the way in. I went in the garage and grabbed a piece of cpvc and using a tape measure I marked off 1" increments. I slid the pipe in and was surprised to find that the hole was 12" deep into a trunk that's only about 16" wide. The hole was filled with a lot of soft sand which I'm assuming is from the for ants that …

Sabal Palmetto “Lisa” Vs Sabal Palmetto
by Collectorpalms- 1 follower

Since Sabal "Lisa" Is a mutation of Sabal Palmetto, are the cultural requirements the same in regards to growth, nutrients, and cold hardiness; or, because it is a mutation, is it possibly slower and less cold hardy etc... I am in the process ( I hope) of attaining what appear to be the real thing. Obviously I am hoping they are not too finicky and will someday have some nice size to them. I am hoping they would have the same cold tolerance for central Texas.

Sabal blackburniana odd spiral growth
by LivistonaFan- 4 replies

I bought this nice Sabal blackburniana online and was quite surprised when I discovered that there are three growing points on the same plant. I don't believe that these are three different plants grown from seed in the same pot. It rather seems like the growth point has been damaged at some time and now two additional spiral growth points emerged. But that's just a guess. What do you think?

Hey everyone!! so i have a small garden with a chamaerops humilis and various succulents in front of my house, but im wondering what other palms would do well in Salt Lake City. I believe im in usda zone 7a. the chamaerops has been growing under an overhang on the southwest side of my house unprotected for the past 2, nearly 3 years. I know most palms in my zone will need protection, but any suggestions as to which would do best?

I planted this palm last May, and it seemed to be doing well up until a few weeks ago when I noticed some discoloration on the emerging spears. I bought it as part of a 2 for 1 deal, and I planted the other trachy at the same time. That palm is still very healthy and is not experiencing this same problem. spear.jfif spear2.jfif

This sp never ceases to surprise me with its variability. This time an obviously arborescent cultivar shows almost unarmed petioles.
