Windmill Palm dead
by carolstropicals- 4 replies

I am pretty sure my Windmill palm is dead. Actually I did it after a bad freeze. Didn't know I was supposed to leave the dead looking leaves on the palm. So this 8 to 10 foot palm trunk is still in the ground. What I want to know is if I can plant bromeliads on this trunk or will it eventually fall over. Anyone know the answer to this strange question. I've tried to search, but found nothing. Just how long can I expect this palm to stay upright ? Thanks, Carol

Please help: needle palm spear pull
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

The first picture shows the newest spear on one of two pups on my needle palm suddenly is no longer green. I pulled on it and it slip up about an inch or two. The second picture shows the some of the leaves of the main plant and the other pup are still green. What should I do. I planted this in April (main plant and two pups all in the same 15 ish gallon pot) and all three plants produced new spears during the summer. Two weeks ago I I put down a little fertilizer that I had used twice before in the growing season (mid autumn fertilizer for needles in this zone is supposed to be helpful) added a couple of inches of black hardwood mulch around the plant being careful …

Hi Folks, Hope you all enjoyed a great summer of palm growing. I was just curious if everyone enjoyed great growth with the hot summer we had. My palms are still pushing out new frond in October…… here’s a view of my garden, SE UK. Would love to see everyone’s palms…. particularly pinnate and hybrid palms. IMG_0813.MOV

I’ve been growing various palms for some time and have never seen this before. Y’all think this is drought stress? Once I realized it was doing this I immediately watered it and it has not helped. Thanks!

Queen Arikury Mix?

Greeting! New to the site so hope this is the right place... I'm looking for palms to start adding privacy and came across this palm at a local nursery. The owner was a bit vague on the specs and name so I was hoping somebody might have some insight. Ever heard of a Queen Arikury Mix? Quoted as cold hardy. Looks great. Super wide and deep green. Can't find anything close on the web aside from a Parrot Palm but the palm in question is not small in statue by any means. Cheers!

Growing a Canary in 7a (and Hi it’s my first post)

Greetings, IPS! I’m a new user here .. and SO excited to have found PalmTalk :-) For the last 15 months I’ve been zealously growing my first outdoor palm!.. a Phoenix canariensis in the mountains of Western North Carolina (2000+ altitude) Zone 7a. So far the trunk has been growing steadily! But keeping this palm happy has taken some strategizing... Last winter, I wrapped the trunk in xmas lights (clear 25W incandescent) followed by a complete layer of Agribon frost wrap which acted as a insulating blanket, keeping IN the heat from the lights. The string was also on a timer which came on each evening around sunset, and I maintained this system for the entire…

These don't seem to match what palmpedia has listed. I bagged them up in perlite and hydroton, and some others in peatmoss/hydroton. Keeping them in the growbox around 85f, and another batch on a heat pad. Got these off ebay FWIW. Top pic is mine, the bottom two pics are from palmpedia.

Cat palm variation
by thyerr01- 4 replies

I made an interesting observation this morning at my local Home Depot. They had just received some new pallets of Majesty and Cat which were still partially wrapped and all looked perfectly normal. These were to replace their current stock which had clearly been left outside during our recent two-night freeze in Houston and looked pretty rough - except for two Cat palms. These two had no apparent cold damage and also looked quite different, being noticeably shorter and had fatter stems. They certainly weren't new as the soil in the pots looked old and they were mixed amongst the other old stock. I figured I'd roll the dice on these two. Out of curiosity I stopped by ano…

Are these sabal minor? Idaho palm sighting

I've known about these plants in an empty field near a garden center in Boise for awhile now. Nothing mind blowing but still cool to see.. Looks like a few of them produced seed this year too. Bonus pics of some cannas that look to have naturalized and taken over the same area. Plants have been here at least 5 years or so, probably longer.

by bgifford- 4 replies

Hello everyone. I finally decided to plant some of my Palms this year here in zone 6b. I have some Trachycarpus fortunei and Washingtonia Robusta that I want to plant. Having seen others in lower zones have success protecting theirs I thought I should do ok here. So my question is: When should I plant? Meaning should I go by certain temps or once the risk of a frost has past. Thanks B

My tallest Trachy

Here's my Tallest Trachy . It's a female . I thought males grew faster , maybe due to the fact that they don't use energy to produce seed ? OK , I'm lying , I wanted everyone to see my Yucca rostrata . I hope I don't get in trouble by the Palm Society authorities , but that female Trachy was a tiny little plant from PDN about 16 years ago . Wow , time sure flies ! Will

Windmill palm bristles bending (Charlotte, NC)
by charlotte palm guy- 1 follower

I live in Charlotte and the most recent couple of fonds that have popped up on my Windmill Palm have bent bristles. All bristles are bent about half way up on new fonds. The tree was planted about 2 years ago and grew like crazy last summer. It’s about 8 feet tall from base to top of fonds. Is the bending normal? Why all the sudden are the coming in bent? It seems fine otherwise and is next to house in partial sun. Maybe due to cold weather we have had?

Windmill palm Growth and development

Hey all, I’ve been taking pictures since I planted my windmill palm here in maine. I’ve found it interesting to see the trunk development and the crown shoot upwards. Hopefully the palm continues to weather our island here on the coast, it’s already endured two winters as we go into a third here. The comparison picture is two years, the left one is when I’ve planted it and the right was this august. curious if anyone else has progress pictures of their plants and how much they have grown?

4 o'clocks forest is taking over the palms....if you could see them in order they are Trachycarpus Manipur (Naga Hills) T.Latisectus, T.takil, T.Oreophilus and a T.Princeps...the other 2 Trachys hidden in this picture are T.Wagnerianus x T.Princeps and a small T.Geminisectus. should say 4 o'clocks above I can take a pic of those 2 if anyone is interested. Does anyone else grow Colocasia "Thai giant"? Right now the biggest leaf is close to 3' and may put out a 5' long leaf by summers end if no storms or wind damage. I will try and find a pic of last years and add it at the end.. Sorry about the picture quality, not a good camera. The "Madaga…

Needle or dwarf palmetto
by Landasaw- 4 replies

So I have a place in my yard protected area zone 7A Hendersonville Tennessee. After a heavy rain there is sometimes standing water. Takes it a little longer to drain, but a palm would look good there so I was wondering about the various cultivars of dwarf palmetto and needle. Which one is tolerant of wet conditions and cold hardy?
