In my location, In east Tennessee, where would be the best spot to plant a needle palm? In zone 6b/7a. It rarely drops below zero in a winter within the last 10 or so years. We have moderately hot summers. Cold but not frigid winters. Precipitation is 56 inches per year. 13 inches of snow. I know it needs some amount of sun but my yard is limited to mostly shade but there are some small spots with more sun but they are a bit exposed out in the open. I don't know if it would get enough heat in the shady spots but I also don't want it to be out in the open.

Livistonia Chinensis Survivors in Zone 8b Texas?

What percentage survived 5F or thereabouts? I have one tall one left. Survived 4F unprotected and took full force of weather. 3 others survived too. Did better than Washingtonia percentage wise for me. It got beat up this winter from 22F wind and ice this year, but it did have a nice crown by last year. I expect it to look good by late summer. Not sure if the trunk will end up with damage. But I like the curve it developed at base.

Anyone in the NY,NJ,CT area?

Just wondering how many other members are in the NY Tri-state area and what are you growing? Most successfull palms? Biggest disappointments? Protection methods/materials that seem to work the best? Here in NJ (coastal 7a-, I was a bit shocked to loose my two large Windmills last winter with a low of 4F on two different occasions. While I realize it was brutaly cold, I thought since they had been established close to 10 yrs and over 4ft tall with a mound of leaves around the base, they would make it....wrong!! However I was surprised to see my Sabal minors make it through unprotected with no damage whatsoever! This year I am using clear dome greenhouse umbrellas I…

I have never posted here but have lurked for many years and have a question. One of my Pindo Palms (Butia capitata/ordorata) has always exhibited lime green leaves and bright green leaf bases. I planted it as a 3 gallon specimen 9 years ago. Since I live in central Dallas, the palm usually never sees temperatures lower than approximately 20F/-6C. We have had one particularly harsh winter with temperatures down to 13F/-10C and 4 days below 32F/0C. The palm survived this with some damage to the central spear but surprisingly without spear pull. (All other Pindoes in my yard lost spears but recovered.) Over just the last year, the leaves of this particular palm have bee…

Hey all Hope everyone is having a great growing season. We sure needed it after this crazy winter! My Trachys are doing great. Had some minor damage, but a little pruning goes a long way. For you first time growers up north, it is possible to grow palms in NYC. Trachys 4th year in the ground. If they could survive the last two winters they can survive anything!! Will be posting my new winter protection method in Dec, palms are to big to use old method. Good luck & enjoy the rest of the summer P.S. Anyone have a good place to buy mature Yucca Rostrada in the tri state area? Don't like shipping bare rooted? rather pick up in pot. Thanks in advance Robert

Does anyone know if many pindo palms survived after the big freeze in Dallas or Austin? I'm in Raleigh and I planted one in my yard a few months ago. We don't typically get as cold as it got in both of those locations so my thought is that if pindos survived that, mine should do ok. And I do expect to have to protect it a few times a year.

Cape Hatteras Wild/Naturalized Sabal Palmetto.

Someome sent me these Sabal Palmettos from the Park Land Coastal Reserve in Buxton on Hatteras Island. These were both in the middle of the coastal woods. Any possibility that first one is a remainder of the now gone Native Population? I've heard Bald Head Island palmettos grow much slower than Native Florida ones and those of course grow very slow. Could this possibly have been a seedling during the time when the native sabal palmetto on the island were cut down for their edible bud?

Hey everyone, hope you’re all well Thought I’d share with you all an update on my seed grown juania, After a bit of a stressful year for all my palms while I moved house, they are now settling again and putting on new growth. The Juania, considering everything have done well despite the extra stresses and I’ll be looking at maybe re-potting them this year. Seed was purchased in 2016 and it’s been great to watch them grow and now develop pinnate leaves

T. Wagnerianus in zone 7a?

I am considering planting a T. Wagnerianus with a couple of feet of trunk here in zone 7a (Olney MD). The internet accounts I have seen are mixed on its ability to handle winters here with minimal protection. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with winter conditions on more developed versions of this Trachy in this area (or colder)? Thanks

How wet can Nannorrhops and Uresana tolerate?
by Keys6505- 6 replies

I have a few vacancies that have opened up on my fence line thanks to the last few TX winters. My ultimate goal is to have a wall of trees so I don't have to see any other houses from my yard. I am including an overall pic so everyone can see the nearby trees that are seemingly unaffected by the soil conditions, albeit they are not desert species like the ones I am looking to plant. The small tree on the left and the larger on the right are L. Chinensis, the second to the right is an Arenga Englerii. All 3 have survived total defoliation over the past 2 winters. The second spot to the left is just a placeholder clearance Majesty and in the middle is an A. Wrightii th…

Will green sabal birmingham seeds sprout?

Hi all, I collected a bunch of sabal birmingham seeds yesterday. They are all green but were already falling off the tree and the ones I pulled came off with almost no resistence. They're soaking in water now. About half sank to the bottom and the other half are floating at the top. Is there any chance these might germinate or should I throw the bunch out and try again next month when the seeds are black, assuming there are any left.

Filifera Seedlings After Low of 4 Degrees

I planted a handful of seeds in May of 2014, and this is their second winter without protection. I'm in Lubbock (7b), and we had two cold snaps this winter; one was a low of 6, and the other was 4. Fast forward a couple of months, and I was pleasantly surprised to find new growth in several seedlings. These seeds were provided by Jwitt--thanks buddy!

How to protect a palm (maypan) over winter, 9b?
by Gottagrowemall- 1 follower

I bought it from a landscaper in ormond beach who left them completely unprotected over this past winter. It only had 1-2 green fronds and the spear was green. I put it in the ground in probably February of 21, fertilized, lots of water, mulch, and it’s looking really happy (on the right you can see one of the left over cold damaged fronds). It gets a good amount of coverage from some banana trees on one side and I’m thinking they’ll take the majority of the cold. what can I do to protect it on cold nights? Should I wrap the trunk? What could I ideally cover it with? Should I try to tie up the fronds? I could also use bamboo poles and frost cloth to build a litt…
