I'm fairly new to palm growing in the midwest. I'm going to ask a stupid question. Is this a Washingtonia robusta or filifera? Or could it be a Mediterranean fan palm?

Anybody selling improved Butia eriospatha seeds?
by Aussiegrower- 1 reply

Anybody selling (or would be kind enough to give away) some Butia eriospatha seeds? I am willing to pay for postage & seeds, I live in Australia. I am most concerned about getting good fruit from the tree, I don't want to be disappointed when it finally fruits! So I was hoping to get seeds from a tree which has sweet, tasty, non-fibrous fruit - if there's been some selective breeding that would ideal! It would also be great if the mother tree is prolific fruiter. Thanks!

Do I Buy S. Minor 'McCurtian' or a "Normal" S. Minor?
by PalmTreeDude- 7 replies

I was originally planning on ordering some Sabal minor 'McCurtian' to plant here soon, but, I have read that Sabal minor 'McCurtian'defoliate quicker than other Sabal minor ecotypes. I am on the boarder of zone 7a/7b in Virginia, so wouldn't any Sabal minor be "bulletproof" here?

Palm ID Serena pepens?
by sashaeffer- 18 replies

Bought through EBay vendor saying it was a blue Serena repens. I have other smaller ones in the ground of both the blue and green variety and when getting this palm clearly didn't look like my others even after contacting the seller and then the assuring me what it was. It's one season in the groundFor the firstseason didn't grow it all in the fronds that were there originally burned away even under protection. This is a south facing wall so gets much more sun and warmth and my other two in the ground That have never shown any cold damage. this year however the palm has really taken off with growth not fast but moderate and steady. I've been really curious…

Question: problem with European Fan Palm
by racerxrick- 18 replies
- 2.3k views
Hi, First post, I had palms installed around my pool landscape in Dallas, TX four years ago and we just love them! Over the winter my Mediterranean/European Fan Palm had all the leaves go brown. Late winter/early spring I cut the branches/leaves off and discarded. About 30 days ago I became concerned as one of the "trunks" wasn't producing. As I inspected this problem the center pulled completely out leaving it open. At least 30-45+ days have went by and I still don't see any green shoots coming out. I will attach photos. QUESTION: Is there anything I can do? (This is arguably our favorite palm!) Thank you in advance, Rick

Pindo Palm Frond Issues/Disease - Any Ideas?
by Skimfizz- 2 replies
- 1.8k views
I've got a 6 year old Pindo in my front yard with frond discoloration and premature drying (I think....compared to my neighbors that are all green). All the plants in the same bed under the Palm are doing fine. The Palm is even fruiting. It's in full Sun in Charleston, SC area. I feed it Espoma about 3 times a year. I water only when we don't get an inch or so a week. Can you take a look at the pictures and tell if I have a bacterial/viral issue, or is it something more related to things I can be doing better to manage it ? Thanks!

Robusta

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I live in a little town in southeast Georgia called Nahunta. It's about 30 minutes from the Atlantic and about 30 minutes from the Georgia/Florida line. I had a question about the small crown growth on a robusta I bought from a nursery. They got a few of them from a guy who was just getting rid of them. Anyway, they didn't have any growth on top. And, neither one of them had much of a rootball. They were in pretty bad condition. I believe they've been suffering from malnutrition. And, I think the leaves were burnt off from the previous winter's freeze (the guy lived about 69 miles up the road, and I believe they get harder freezes). …

Filiferas spotted in West Texas (7b)

Found in Seminole, Texas. Several Trachys found as well, didn't take pics of those. First one: I've watched this one grow from the time it had about 5' of trunk in 2011--the year that killed this palm's twin sibling (you can see the spot in the sidewalk where it was located). It has about 9' of trunk now, and the base has fattened dramatically. I think this will be a monster palm; sure to outgrow it's planting area in the pavement. The homeowner is a friend of a friend, and supposedly they've been waiting for this one to die from cold. I don't expect that'll happen anytime soon.

Until recently (the last few years or so), I've decided to try various species that aren't hardy to my zone, or in some cases, select species where there's very limited information on its hardiness. I've had many failures, but a success or two in Laccospadix Australasica and Washingtonia Robusta (so far in 8B and 9A winters). I've now decided to try out the Coccothrinax genus. I've read that the vast majority of them are 9B and up, but I tried to find some that will stay relatively short in stature (just in case I want to protect it during a really bad winter) and one that is a noted 9B hardiness zone rating. This years pick for my experiment is Coccothrinax Hiorami.…

Yet another Sabal mexicana survives a south central Kansas winter!
by jfrye01@live.com- 15 replies

Checking around the yard today, I noticed something very surprising on a palm I had given up for dead...this Sabal mexicana was planted as a one gallon strapling last summer, northeast side of the house (I know, worst place to plant palms, but I'm out of room! ). When winter came, I didn't have the means to protect it, as I had several other larger palms I wanted to keep healthy, so I said goodbye to it and gave it up for dead...and it appeared so as of last week, completely brown, so I planned to dig it out and replace with something else. I'm glad I waited, as today, I noticed this: It lives! It may not look like much, but here in Kansas, I'll take what I …
