Chamaerops "var semperflorens"

This is not a valid name of some established variety or cultivar. In fact the term had been selected as quite descriptive for this particular Chamaerops specimen in my garden. Yes, you have guessed right, it is a specimen that blooms all year long but the winter months. A very unusual habit for a mediterranean plant. Also a fine example of how prone to mutation is this amazing but underestimated sp. In detail this plant produces inflorescences successively from early spring to early winter. The inflorescences bear either male or female flowers and occasionally also hermaphrodite ones. In the following pictures (shot yesterday) you are able to observe this year's in…

Bringing Palms in for the winter

I have a Mexican Fan and Windmill Palm in containers outside. I plan to bring them in the garage during the winter months. The garage only has one small window on the westside. I plan to ensure that the temperature never dips below the point that would cause them harm. Should I use grow lights during their winter storage or let them go 'dormant'?

I live in south-central Pennsylvania in a (northern state USA) zone 6b. I mention "northern state" because we experience extended periods of cold temps in winter and do not receive much relief from milder spells being mixed in, like a "southern state" zone 6b might. Those milder spells in winter could help a palm recover from a brief dip to very cold temps. Here, snow may fall and stay on the ground for up to a month without melting. Some years, the soil is frozen for weeks in shaded areas and occasionally winter days do not rise above 14 F (-10 degrees C), although this is rare. The coldest nighttime temperature I have observed over the past 15 years is -5 degrees F…

Home Depot Source???

Ok so I have bough all my palms from HD. The chamerops humilis that overwintered in my z7a was hiding in a corner looking pretty sad looking but bounced back and is thriving after a late august early september planting and semi harsh winter temps. The 7 trachycarpus I have are also doing very well after being planted in mid March, with some looking almost 3 times larger than when planted with just light fertilizer and decent watering. My question is HD sells these palms in black containers with a 10F cold hardiness early in the year and later they switch to blue pits and change the cold hardiness to 65F. None of my palms are from blue pots, but how can they sell the same …

What type of Palm is this?
by Rightstuff15- 7 replies

While visiting some friends in Memphis, TN I noticed a neighbor down the street who had palms in their backyard around the pool. I snapped a few pictures as I was so impressed with the size of them. I don't believe they protect them during the winter months. Can you tell me what type of palms they are? Next time I visit, I plan to knock on their door and ask about them. Thanks!

Fertilizing my palms
by barnabus- 3 replies

I live in SC and currently use Carl Pools fertilizer.I have bark mulch around them as well. When its time to fertilize this fall do I rake the mulch back and apply directly to the ground or do I leave a thin layer of mulch, fertilize and then cover with the remaining mulch again. Or do I just throw it on top of the mulch as this looks terrible.I don't want to burn my palms...again. Last time I raked it all back to the ground, fertilized and covered it up and still got some burning.Whats the correct way with mulch? Thanks!

I have a windmill palm for the past two years that the spear has pulled out. Just when I think its dead it pushes a spear up but it take FOREVER for it to open...if it does.Could this palm be junk and I should just throw it away instead of wasting my time or is something else going on? Can a plant like this ever recover and be normal and what causes that anyway?

Anybody selling improved Butia eriospatha seeds?
by Aussiegrower- 1 reply

Anybody selling (or would be kind enough to give away) some Butia eriospatha seeds? I am willing to pay for postage & seeds, I live in Australia. I am most concerned about getting good fruit from the tree, I don't want to be disappointed when it finally fruits! So I was hoping to get seeds from a tree which has sweet, tasty, non-fibrous fruit - if there's been some selective breeding that would ideal! It would also be great if the mother tree is prolific fruiter. Thanks!

Do I Buy S. Minor 'McCurtian' or a "Normal" S. Minor?
by PalmTreeDude- 7 replies

I was originally planning on ordering some Sabal minor 'McCurtian' to plant here soon, but, I have read that Sabal minor 'McCurtian'defoliate quicker than other Sabal minor ecotypes. I am on the boarder of zone 7a/7b in Virginia, so wouldn't any Sabal minor be "bulletproof" here?

Palm ID Serena pepens?
by sashaeffer- 18 replies

Bought through EBay vendor saying it was a blue Serena repens. I have other smaller ones in the ground of both the blue and green variety and when getting this palm clearly didn't look like my others even after contacting the seller and then the assuring me what it was. It's one season in the groundFor the firstseason didn't grow it all in the fronds that were there originally burned away even under protection. This is a south facing wall so gets much more sun and warmth and my other two in the ground That have never shown any cold damage. this year however the palm has really taken off with growth not fast but moderate and steady. I've been really curious…

Question: problem with European Fan Palm
by racerxrick- 18 replies
- 2.3k views
Hi, First post, I had palms installed around my pool landscape in Dallas, TX four years ago and we just love them! Over the winter my Mediterranean/European Fan Palm had all the leaves go brown. Late winter/early spring I cut the branches/leaves off and discarded. About 30 days ago I became concerned as one of the "trunks" wasn't producing. As I inspected this problem the center pulled completely out leaving it open. At least 30-45+ days have went by and I still don't see any green shoots coming out. I will attach photos. QUESTION: Is there anything I can do? (This is arguably our favorite palm!) Thank you in advance, Rick

What are some species of palms that grow at high elevations? I know South America has a lot, it would be interesting to be in tropical mountains. And doesn't some date palms grow in, or near mountains in the middle east?

Pindo Palm Frond Issues/Disease - Any Ideas?
by Skimfizz- 2 replies
- 1.7k views
I've got a 6 year old Pindo in my front yard with frond discoloration and premature drying (I think....compared to my neighbors that are all green). All the plants in the same bed under the Palm are doing fine. The Palm is even fruiting. It's in full Sun in Charleston, SC area. I feed it Espoma about 3 times a year. I water only when we don't get an inch or so a week. Can you take a look at the pictures and tell if I have a bacterial/viral issue, or is it something more related to things I can be doing better to manage it ? Thanks!

Robusta
by Rothbardian1- 5 replies

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I live in a little town in southeast Georgia called Nahunta. It's about 30 minutes from the Atlantic and about 30 minutes from the Georgia/Florida line. I had a question about the small crown growth on a robusta I bought from a nursery. They got a few of them from a guy who was just getting rid of them. Anyway, they didn't have any growth on top. And, neither one of them had much of a rootball. They were in pretty bad condition. I believe they've been suffering from malnutrition. And, I think the leaves were burnt off from the previous winter's freeze (the guy lived about 69 miles up the road, and I believe they get harder freezes). …

Filiferas spotted in West Texas (7b)
by pennerchris@gmail.com- 1 follower

Found in Seminole, Texas. Several Trachys found as well, didn't take pics of those. First one: I've watched this one grow from the time it had about 5' of trunk in 2011--the year that killed this palm's twin sibling (you can see the spot in the sidewalk where it was located). It has about 9' of trunk now, and the base has fattened dramatically. I think this will be a monster palm; sure to outgrow it's planting area in the pavement. The homeowner is a friend of a friend, and supposedly they've been waiting for this one to die from cold. I don't expect that'll happen anytime soon.
