Plantation season is just about upon us...

...and these guys are just waiting to go in the ground. Waiting on a rhapidophyllum and minor too, and looking to get a few fortunei too. But everything is ready and waiting for the cold spell to be over so they can enjoy that red/brown clay! Dont have much hopes for the cycads, but curious to try them in the better microclimate a d see how they do. All 4 totaled out to maybe 25 or 30 for 4 plants so not a terrible loss. The cerifera was looking much better a week ago, but started to hate life inside and in a pot. I am facing WNW so these are facing ESE sorta and 100% blocked from bad juju winds that come from the west and north.

Debating between setting up sprinklers around my gardens vs soakers vs drip hoses. Either way it'll be a job laying it down and picking it up, But Im on well and not ready to invest in a big boy irrigation just yet. What do yall use for ornamental irrigation? Ive used them all but curious as to what yall use. We have a utisol clay soil.

B X J vs. J X B? and other hybrid combos?
by DoomsDave- 37 replies

Scot from SC's thread on hybrid hardiness piqued my curiosity. He bought a J X B, but thought it might be a B X J instead. I have a B and J something, and I'd like to ID it. What's the key differences to the observer? I recall other threads dealing with Syagrus X Jube and vice versa and one was ugly and one was gorgeous. Will post a pic of my monster, and monster to be when I escape from the Dark Tower. dave

Transplant shock(not)

Be Leary of buying plants online with promises of a guarantee. I got this one as a Christmas present from an online seller in Georgia. I received two and must admit they looke pretty bad and appeared burnt. I kept them inside protected from the cold winter temps. In less than one month one appeared dead. I asked for my guarantee to be honored and Tytyga said in six months this one would be fine. So no replacement! I won’t buy another palm from anyone else but Joe in Texas.

Size of Fans
by Rothbardian1- 0 replies

I bought a couple of robustas last year that had about an 8’ trunk. The guy I bought them from said that he got them from a guy further north from where I am (about 100 miles). They didn’t have any fronds in them when I bought them, and they had a very small root ball. I babies them last year, but the size and length of the fans were small and short; noticeably more so on one than the other. This year, we had a freak snow and ice storm. The first in about 20 years for my area (southeast Georgia, zone 8b, but in the very edge of 9a/coastal South Georgia). So, my question (hypothesis): Will repeated defoliation affect the size of the new fans and length of…

It Is Alive!

My Washingtonia robusta was really beat up this winter in VA, I know it has no chance of surviving here without protection, so I protected it during our coldest cold snaps and it has been fried for about a month now. But it is hanging on, it went through many nights in the low 20s and high teens (not much below 19 degrees F) unprotected as well. This whole thing was just an experiment. I marked a line on the spear and a line on the old base of a frond, today I checked and the line on the fried spear went up! It is slowly warming up here, and I may have to protect it only one or two more times this winter. At the time that I am posting this is is 64 degrees F outside and t…

Pindo Palm. Yellow growth

This pindo palm is about 6-8 months old. It is in a pot and did great over the summer and fall. I heat tape surrounding the pot and strewn through the fronds as well as burlap protection. The last 6 weeks I noticed yellow droopy growth. We we live in Vancouver BC and only got down to -4 over night a few times so I don’t think cold has anything to do with it. Any thoughts ? ryan

New trachycarpus fortunei
by Josue Diaz- 11 replies

I have been sick for several days and finally felt well enough to go out and catch some freah air. Of course, for me, that means doing some nursery hopping I came home with this 5-gallon trachycarpus for only $5, it was in the ugly plant section at a local nursery! I don't know what's so ugly about it because it looks great to me.

Can mule palms survive temps between 10f - 15f? 1 2

I'm curious how mule palms faired during the recent record cold week in the SE US. Temps at my location dropped to 12f twice in one week, with highs in the 30s. For those who experienced similar temps, especially in the Carolinas, how do your mule palms look? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

Here are the same windmills that i sold in 2016 to an Amarillo customer. Last January they defoliated 100% but never spear pulled when the temp dropped somewhere around -3f. This pic was about a week after they experienced 5f earlier this year.

bujubaeaF1

While I live in a zone 9b, I still plant cold hardy palms because I think its always possible to have a 9a winter, even in the tampa area. If and when that happens I dont want to be wiped out of mature palms. So I grow a number of cold hardy palms on the coldest parts of my 0.3 acre yard. Out front is the cold hardy zone, and there are some nice choices to be had and plenty of blue or bluish choices. I recently had a 15 gallon bujubaea shipped from socal and I planted it a week ago. With this palm I am hoping for a similar look to the B x J in the late Dick Douglas garden. I have always loved Dicks cold hardy garden, and his bujubaea inspired me to get this one.

N. Ritcheana iran silver cold hardiness 6b/7a Texas

Last year I sold a large nannorhorps ritcheana to a customer in Amarillo, tx (zone 6b) and wanted to share a few pics. This palm is from the Iranian silver population and is just as silver as the best med fan. This location dropped down to 4-5f this year which cased a little burn as shown in the pic. As the months pass we'll be able to see just how hardy this cultivar really is.

Spear pulls

The past week was horrific, temps of 15F every night and never above freezing during the day! My potted palms froze solid and I lost a Butia and Chamaerops in the ground. Frozen to the core! We stayed frozen for three days straight! My Sabal Louisiana spear pulled, young Sabal Palmetto, even a young Rhapidopyllum spear pulled! I’ve never experienced this before and I’m in shock. The only things that survived were some large potted Chamaerops, Rhapidophyllum, and Trachycarpus. All of my rare palms in the greenhouse were heated. Thank the stars.
