As I understand, the white spots on my Sabal Minor are tiny insects. What can I use to rid of them?

Finally planted the sagos and update on potted trachycarpus
by mdsonofthesouth- 2 replies

So as the title says I finally planted my sago palms about a week or so ago and hoping for the best, but planning on the worst. Pretty much dont expect them to live, and at the very best they will flush and defoliate until they do die. Either way I needed them out of pots as I'm not a fan of potted plants. Also my new trachycarpus that I potted up recently is still declining. The only hope is the healthy looking green spear. Sure would hate to have to return it... All my other potted up to be planted later palms are looking wonderful! Although sadly plantation might have to wait til 2019 as the addition isn't looking to be done soon enough for my latest date.

First palm plantings at my new home
by Ben OK- 11 replies

I finished building a house around the first week of July last year. I was so busy sodding and seeding a lawn and wrapping up loose ends home projects that I didn't get any of my potted plants in the ground last year. I have enough of my lawn well established now that I was able to plant one small bed on the south side of my home as well as make a bed around one of my septic sprinklers. The bed near the house: In the corner by the back porch is a sabal minor or possibly a palmetto (I've mixed up some small sabals) :

Livistona chinensis "trunk hardy" here!
by mdsonofthesouth- 7 replies
- 1.8k views
So been watching little spears come up which was expected, but I never thought the "big" trunks would too! So essentially my protection was for roots and did nothing for trunks, growing points and crowns. This clump saw many single digit temps last winter and was exposed so its been through some stuff! I originally gave up on it and now Im curious as to what the long term is!

Windmill Palm- Prongs turning yellow
by Allen G- 20 replies
- 7.2k views
Help- I have an 11 year old 25 ft Windmill palm in backyard at waters (Lake) edge. The lower prongs (leaves) are turning yellow but top and new growth is green. In South Carolina we had a colder Winter than usual- so there may be some cold winter damage. I have never fertilized the palm except for today- I used Miracle Grow Palm Fertilizer which is balanced in Nitrogen, Potassium and Magnesium. I suspect that there is a nutrient deficiency-either Potassium, Magnesium or both. Should I use any thing else? Perhaps a liquid. Also, should I cut off the yellow prongs. Miracle does not have Boron in it . Thanks

A post on here said to me that you can't overwater Trachycarpus in pot with drainage so I've been watering everyday during a 25-28degree heatwave, and I potted a princeps hybrid up placed in full sun and did the same thing, what happen?the leaves turn yellow and tips turn brown,is this overwatering,if not what am I doing wrong?

Follow up-Windmill Palm turning yellow
by Allen G- 3 replies
Hello everyone- This is a follow-up of a recent post of my 12 year old Windmill turning Yellow. The picture is it is now. Some of the yellow at the bottom has turned from yellow to brown and I should probably cut the brown off. The top of the tree is green with some minor yellow in spots but not much. It appears to be most on the lower umbrella. We had a very cold winter in SC and I do think that some of this may be wind damage. In April, I started to notice some of the yellow and I lightly fertilized with Palm Fertilizer (Miracle Grow-Palm Food). I plan to do it again in June. Actually, the tree does not look any worst than it did in April, just that some of the yell…

Do Florida Grown Palms Do Well In The Carolinas?
by PalmTreeDude- 1 follower

Since a lot of palms are grown in Florida and shipped up north, do palms grown in Florida do well in the Carolinas? For example, if a palm (let's say Butia, that has experience nothing below 30 degrees F) is shipped from Florida to somewhere like Myrtle Beach, will it end up burning in the winters?

Neglected Trachycarpus fortunei growth rate in Maryland
by mdsonofthesouth- 2 replies

So I posted this palm in another thread and just looked on google maps per a PM on here thanks @MDPalm! The first picture is july 2014, last is from mid to late December. Growth rate isnt terribly fast, but OC is NOTORIUS for neglecting any and all landscaping (especially "exotics"). Judging by the size its been here for a while, and easily escaped my eyes for years as its of the beaten path, unless you were big on car washes while on vacation. I am not lol. Spear pull x 2 1 2
by mdsonofthesouth- 76 replies

Well I knew there would be an attrition ratewith my plantation but I didnt think it'd be that quick and easy. Had 2 pull today sadly and checked all my others and they are stout still. Here's hpping they pull through, but we have had an exceptionally cold fall and have had 3 cold snaps already so the palms saw as low as 16F for an hour or 3 and 18 and 19f the other times. All brief with day times over freezing. They are mulched a little and under a canopy that prevents cold rain or snow to hit them their first year, not to mention the rope lights that prevent frozen soil above the roots and trunk. What puzzles tye heck out of me is the livistona chinensi and c…

Sabal mexicana Seedlings
by bananaman- 0 replies
I picked up some Sabal mexicana seeds off of the ground back in mid-April. They’d been sitting there over this years long, harsh winter, I presume. I decided to try planting some — I just used the little 4” pots, knowing I’d need to transplant them pretty soon because of how the roots grow. Sure enough, 4/6 have germinated so far. I transplanted them all today up into a gallon pot, and I was shocked at how deep the base of the eophyll was! On the three with them, the seed had grown almost down to the bottom of the little pot. They should grow fast, once they settle in. It’s hot and humid right now, so they should grow pretty fast! I wouldn’t be…

Windmill (Trachycarpus) form,
by Las Palmas Norte- 8 replies
This Windmill palm is a bit different to what is usually seen, at least around here. I've seen similar but not with thick heavy trunks such as mine. Typically these grown in more shade than normal will exhibit elongated petioles but this measures out (petioles only) at 5 feet in length. Nearly all the leaflets droop at about ¾ of the way out, giving it another look. Tape measure extended to one foot. Cheers, Barrie.
