How bad of an idea to plant in-ground in winter?

I just got these 1 gal Serenoa Repens and 10gal Copernicia Alba in the mail. They were removed from their pot and bagged for shipping. Am I better off potting them up until early spring (which here in Houston is about 3 months away) and then planting in ground? Or would it be safer going straight into the ground now and protecting if we get any nasty weather? I'm assuming the Serenoa would probably be fine going in now, but I want to baby the Alba. I don't know if potting now and then re-planting again in 3 months would be too much stress after just going through the mail for the last few days.

I´ve been reading posts about the recent polar vortex that affected texas and northern Mexico and this reminded me of this palm species (Brahea berlanderiana/ B.dulcis) that grows just across the border in Coahuila. I think this might be the most cold hardy palm in Mexico and maybe one of the most cold hardy in NA at least for sure is the palm with the coldest natural habitat, but i am only refering to the palm species that grows in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Coahuila and Nuevo León. Serrania del Burro in Coahuila is their northernmost population, they mostly grow on the eastern side of the mountains growing among oaks and junipers. …

Chamaedorea Microspadix 1 2 3

Not mine but thought I'd share. This is a clump I got from @Laaz last year that I gave to my buddy. It wasn't protected this past winter so it at one point was covered in ice and saw 19F a couple times. It really is a shame that these aren't more readily available given how tough and tropical looking they are. Maybe one day big box will start offering these

Well I wanted to share this cool all-Windmill palm house near me in Casa View area! They planted most I have ever seen at one time and from he dead trunks reveals the last few deadly freezes of late The 20's are turning out to be coldest decade since the '70s from my memory and even colder really. I covered and protected yesterday best I could. Trying a low wattage bulb places at base of my prized Brahea armata It has been upper teens all day but they still say we will be low freezing until Weds. An eternity. So much was stressed by record heat and drought this year, sure will be hard on poor plants! Geez

Butia x Jubea post Winter Storm Gerri (NTX)

This will be the third growing season in the ground for this Butia x Jubea and I wrapped it last year, provided the same type of protection.. basic C9 around the trunk and growth point, frost cloth on top, and hoping for the best. Last year, it had very little damage but we had a shorter duration. This year, we had a nearly 90 hour freeze, and 9.9f ultimate low... The growth point is perfect (minus some damage from me putting a C9 too close to a petiole) but the rest is spotless. Some damage on outer fronds, and likely wind damage, or dryness... It's raining now, so if it acts like my other palms in the ground, it will look much better by tomorrow. Overall.. thi…

Mule palm rescue?
by Cody Salem- 9 replies
I have a new mule palm that I'm worried about. I tried to protect it from the cold, with heat tape and frost cloth but I'm worried I wrapped it too tight and might have damaged it. The spear has turned yellow/white in the middle and gone soft. This has been a sign of death on every other palm I've had. I just planted then palm last spring and it was a bit stressed from an undersized container. I am in Oregon, so I'm concerned about the next 4 months of rain before it is warm enough to start growing again. Being only 8mo in the ground, I think my best bet is to pull it out and get it someplace dry, and hopefully stop any rot. It was very well protected so there…

I was checking out palms being sold from PDN and saw this Palmetto they call Sabal palmetto Augusta ( I've never heard of it ) . It survived the 80's record cold . It reminded me of my Sabal palmetto " Tifton Hardy " . They also have some Miamiensis and a hardy Cycas for sale . https://www.plantdelights.com/products/sabal-palmetto-augusta Will

Hello everyone. Hope everyone in the lower 48 is staying warm and has their palms comfy. I was wondering if anyone has a great painless way to tie up fronds of a Washingtonia or Phoenix type of palm. You know.... the ones that eat you alive if you get to close to their teeth and thorns. I was just wondering since I seem to struggle each year when it comes time to get them ready for winter. I am not so much worried about the Phoenix yet as it's still easily manageable but with the Washy, it's up on a tall ladder territory and takes me several try's and with a few nice scratches and a couple drops of blood lost. As always, I appreciate the he…

2024 Freezing Rain and Ice....

Oh geeze guys this is not good... This front moved through Alabama from yesterday evening through the wee hours of this morning and dropped more freezing rain and sleet in my area than snow. Thankfully, I wrapped the blackburniana with a small heat cable and covered the spear/center with frost cloth, as well as the Butia. I however did not wrap the Chamaerops, only with a heat cable. This was the result: Our low last night appears to be 17.8F (at 8 am actually). Low tonight is predicted around 13F. So this doesnt look good. I am concerned about water collecting inside the crown. Here is…

Washy protection this season :
by WSimpson- 3 followers

The Arctic air finally inched over the mountains and into my area . I was relatively mild until this morning when I got down to 15F . My Washy might have survived 15F but I see some other cold , like 14F possibly for Sunday morning coming down , and I want to be on the safe side . So here is my protection scheme that takes about 2 men 2 hours to complete , and it gets harder every year as the palm keeps going skyward . It's pretty self-explanatory but there are a few hints in the paragraphs below that might help . First I cut off the fronds so I can get the Xmas lights high on the trunk , then the trunk is wrapped with Incandescent Xmas lights and cove…

Sabal rosei - post winter storm Gerri 2024 update

Sabal rosei…. 90 hours below freezing, 9.9F ultimate low, no supplemental heat and here we are. WOW. This is a cold hardy contender, and thus far I’m rating these as DFW hardy.. I probably didn't need to cover it this year, but I really loved the amount of growth I got over the year, and didn't want to risk losing any of it. Turns out I don't need to worry! I will say that I am pleasantly surprised. The big reveal..... hah.

Unhappy Lisa

I bought this Lisa on PT last year. It came in perfect condition, I let it acclimate in the pot a little and then planted it out. This is the wettest corner of my yard, but about 10' in 1 direction there's a L. Chinensis and Arenga Englerii that are fine and 10' the other way is a Bizzie and my neighbors S. Mexicana that show no issues (I know, a lot of trees in one area). My question is, could it be the wet ground that's upsetting her, or something else? Has never held more than the 1-2 leaves at a time like it is now. Since she was originally a potted tree is there any better chance of relocating her than a ground-grown Sabal? I may be moving at some point so I'd…

How Root Hardy is Phoenix Roebelenii?
by NC_Palms- 18 replies

I am familiar with this palm being able to withstand temperatures down to the mid 20’s, but how does this palm relate to say L. chinensis in terms of root hardiness. Or if I plant this species here, could it grow as a perennial the same way I can grow L. chinensis and rhapis here?

Growing palms in San Antonio, TX 1 2

I was wondering what lessons were learned after the big freeze back in February 2021. I see many businesses replanting Washingtonia Robustas instead of Filiferas but I also see a large number of Sabal Mexicana/ Palmetto being planted as well. So what kind of palm trees would you like to see more in and around San Antonio? Is there a way we can get them planted more frequently along highways and other public roads ? Maybe talk to city department that's in charge of landscaping? Your thoughts please .

I have lived in my current home in Cherokee county Oklahoma for about 6 years. Over the years I have planted lots of small sabal minor seedlings throughout my 5 acres of mostly wooded space. I believe I also planted at least a few palmettos too, though I no longer remember which ones they were. Over my time here we have experienced winter lows of -2F, -2F, 10F, -14F, and 8F. Our summers had been pretty mild, without significant drought until the summer of 2022. This summer saw about two solid months of highs ranging from 95F to 105F, and several stretches of 3 to 5 weeks with no rain at all. On the plus side, I didn't do much mowing this year. On the downside, I wate…

protecting potted roots

so i have multiple sabal minors in 24 inch and 36 inch planters because my shared yard is entirely concrete. the planters i assume to be about 10 and 20ish gallons. I also have a few 7g minor in planters and 2 5g. I used to bring them into my garage when temps got below 20f bc I killed at least 4 and 2 needles before learning that plants lose hardinesss in pots by 10f. at least i think thats why they died. My question is would protecting the roots of the minors with burlap, frost cloth and friends prevent them from dying in spring or could it be wind related? in regards to wind, my block is a nearly north-south tunnel of 2 and 3 story townhomes connected from end to …
