Hi everyone, Just wondering what part of the country you are in and when you plan or already have taken off your winter protection for the year. I’m in MA and it looks like next week will be upper 40-55f for highs and lower 30f for lows. Hopefully uncovering needle and sabal minor. Probably st. Patty’s for windmill. I plan on uploading photos when I do.

New Bismarckia Nobilis - Age Guess?
by Teegurr- 2 followers

Just recieved this Bismarckia in the mail. It was 62 dollars. I think that's a pretty good deal? I live in a very warm 8b, or even a 9a, so it might have a shot here, obviously needing some protection. Right now, of course, it's in a pot. I'll probably plant it in late March. Can anyone figure the age? Thanks.

Is this Filifera or Filibusta?

I stumbled across this palm while exploring Wrightsville Beach, NC on Google street view (sorry for low picture quality). Could this be a filifera, or is it a hybrid?

Needle or dwarf palmetto
by Landasaw- 4 replies

So I have a place in my yard protected area zone 7A Hendersonville Tennessee. After a heavy rain there is sometimes standing water. Takes it a little longer to drain, but a palm would look good there so I was wondering about the various cultivars of dwarf palmetto and needle. Which one is tolerant of wet conditions and cold hardy?

Spring cleaning in the garden and I got a little surprise - my phoenix sylvestris (hybrid?) Is flowering . It looks super happy coming out of this winter as well. Ultimate low recorded at 24F with a bunch of nights in the 20s and a TON of rain. There is a touch of burn on the leaflet tips but other than that it looks unfazed. No protection given this winter. Broken palm fronds
by Jtee- 6 replies

Hi all. Quick question. Yesterday I bought a 15 gallon Washingtonian filiferra palm and had to bring it home In my van. I noticed today that the fronds are all bent and the biggest one is yellowing with some brownness on it. is this bad for the palm? Should I cut off all fronds (only has 4) and go from there. I will be planting in ground tomorrow. Thanks.

Mild winter here , and no protection needed .
by WSimpson- 4 replies

My lowest Low was 16F , and the next coldest nights were 7 Lows of 21F-24F , and all days were above 32F . Not bad for here . Below is a picture of my Butia and one of my Washy . The Washy is only frond hardy to 24F , but the petioles are green and there is even a little green on the fronds near the petioles . The trunk is probably hardy to 15F so I didn't have to protect anything this year , including my Chammy ( it's in the Butia picture , but the Butia has grown over it so it's hard to see ) . I'll cut off the damaged Washy fronds soon . This first picture shows my Ensete maurelii with a solid trunk up to about 5 feet . It often dies close to the g…

Canary Leaf Opening
by ahosey01- 7 replies

Wondering if it is normal for my canary palm to open its leaves very slow. I don't know much about palms yet. This was taken Saturday morning: And this was taken about 10 minutes ago: That leaf that is opening pretty much looks the same in both pictures. Is that normal? When my Phoenix dactylifera opens a new leaf, it takes about 4 days from the first sign of opening until it is fully opened.

I have a few species of not-super-tropical palms (Chamaerops, Pygmy date, some cycads) that I overwinter in a greenhouse here in NY that I heat to keep from freezing. It sits at around 40 at night and ranges from 40-80 during the day depending on how sunny and warm outside. I don’t control humidity but it’s way more humid than my house indoors in winter, which probably sits below 40%. They do great in these conditions, not growing at all until I put them out in the summer. I had an idea to periodically bring in a plant or two inside for a week or so at a time, just to get some green inside during the winter months. In the past, I’ve not had luck with palms as ho…

Phoenix dactylferia in fort mill?
by Haddock- 11 replies
Hi I live in the fort mill ( SC )area. I was wondering if Phoenix dactylferia could survive here and grow to be fully mature as it usually never gets cold enough to damage them in January( the few times it gets into the 20s is only for a few hours and not a hard freeze). If that won’t grow here could you suggest a few other tall palms that would grow here without protection ( other then palmetto, pindo, and windmills). Thanks.

Inland Georgia Palm near pool

Hello everyone! I am looking for a few palms to plant near my pool. I plan to add a raised mulch bed and plant the palm about 3-4 feet from the edge of the patio pavers. My concerns is long term damage or lifting from the root system. Also my local plant nursery only provides windmill palms. Stating they really my only choice. thoughts? This area is full sun and clay soil. also how messy would a windmill be during the flowering season? I have found a few growers on Facebook market place with decent pricing. What should I look for in purchasing a 4-6ft palm?

I visited a friend earlier this week and he owns a large property in this area that he has been busy planting on for well over decade. His yard is nothing short of a full-fledged botanical garden with a rich collection of rare trees (maples, oaks, etc...) and shrubs. Of course, palms are strategically sprinkled across the area (several mature Trachy's, (Brazoria) Sabals, Washies, saw palms, Butias, etc...). I didn't have the best camera nor was the lighting ideal but I quickly snapped a few pics. I mainly wanted to share the photo of this large weeping chamaerops. Second pic is of a smaller one (probably cerifera). Last pic is of a very fast-growing Sabal Uresana in…

So on a whim I checked out my wishlist at plant delights nursery and saw that the Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera were being sold again! I have been looking to get these to match my standard chamerops humilis for a while now. So I promptly ordered 2 (might order more lol) to start with and will be garage "greenhouse" keeping them until at least March 2018. Depending on size and health come spring will determine if I plant or just pot up again and "greenhouse" them for another winter. Eitherway great way to spend your lunch break!

Are You Nuts? You can't grow palm trees here!

Howdy Folks, So through many experiments from so called "zone pushers" and the unforeseen cold snaps in recent years in places such as ST. George, Utah and the polar vortex affecting 49 states, plunging even south Florida into the 20s, we know palms of all varieties are much more cold hardy then once thought. So I'm interested to know, who out there lives in places where palms "Don't grow" or where conventional wisdom tells us they're not supposed to grow. There's a LOT of tales out there from folks who live in palmy climates like Southern Arizona or the Carolinas zone pushing with coconuts or other extremely tropical plants. That's not the purpose of this particular…

Zone 7B Record low temps 2021

We just moved here from Iowa 1 1/2 years ago to get away from the cold and snow. We bought a 12 foot Windmill Palm last June from our local landscaping business saying it is cold hardy for this area. Now we had record lows and it hasn’t even been planted a year. It was below freezing for 10 days straight with the lowest -5 during night and 11 during 11. We wrapped the trunk with burlap and a moving blanket and then the snow also piled up around it. We have no idea if it will survive or not. I guess we will find out. We live in Arkansas now. First picture is with the snow Second picture is after the snow melted off Third picture is after it was planted
