New shuttlecock Jubaea
by Fallen Munk- 7 replies

Fall planting of a nice little Jubaea. Hoping it will continue to keep the shuttlecock shape. When I bought my bigger one it was this shape but it grew out of it. Not the prettiest raised bed because I'm out of retaining wall blocks so I just used some rubble from an old patio I tore out. I'll dress it up in the spring, I just didn't want to keep it in the pot all winter.

This is one cross that as of right now is making good on the potential of this cross to be the most beautiful of the Trachy crosses....at least in my opinion....all the best of the Princeps and Wagnerianus. Close up of the nice tidy fibers. And last but not least the T.Latisectus sporting some tomentum on the petioles and spears. <im…

Wild Silver Serenoa Repens in Beaufort County, SC?!

I've lived in Hilton Head area for literally decades and never noticed any of the native Serenoa Repens being even remotely Silver until I stumbled across these today. What's interesting to note is I found them in an area just east of Bluffton before the Bridge to Hilton Head, an area unusually subtropical looking for even Southern Beaufort County, which has more in common with Florida than the rest of the state. Note the super limey ones on the far right to get a sense of contrast. These even have bluish tints. All obviously wild based on how they sit on the land.

T. princeps fall photos

I planted these two in the ground in the spring and took the advice to put them in the hottest, sunniest spot in the yard. Then summer hit and I thought they were going to die. They really looked bad. They didn't grow a single new frond and their color looked terrible. Now that fall has arrived they greened up and started making new fronds. Apparently they like cool wet weather better than summer heat. Now that they have some roots down it will be interesting to see how they do next year.

Greetings, I recently needed to move my potted palms inside for the winter into my basement. They were all placed into a greenhouse that is located on a south facing wall where they receive a decent amount of sun for what it’s worth, and the greenhouse actually reaches 80° F during the day despite the basement being kept between 65-70° F. The palms are 3 days into their home for the winter, and almost all of them appear to be taking the move well so far, with the exception of my Sabal ‘Birmingham’. Over the past month, the Birmingham has began to yellow on the older fronds and within the past 2 weeks some of those fronds have also started to brown in spots. Since I m…

My homemade Trachy shelter
by ColumbusPalm- 2 replies

Hey All, This is what I did today. Got all supplies at Lowe’s. I’ll have this over my Waggie with Christmas lights and a thermocube. Lots of mulch and copper fungicide too. We are having a warm spell but at least I have something made. I’ll take it wherever I move too so I’ll have at least one thing ready for a Trachy! Hopefully it works… cost was about $100 but the greenhouse panel was enough to top my minors and needle too. I’ve seen versions of this but this is what I came up with. Nate

Remove or treat diseased fronds prior to winter?

Hey All, I know something like this was just asked but I don’t think the fronds in question had mealies or scale. Not sure what’s on here… Several fronds affected. Should I remove before protecting or treat? Thanks in advance Nate

I have a few windmill palms and wondering what their height potential will be here in TN 6b/7a. Cold protection is easy, I just have to be vigilant and stick to a routine. I'm not expecting any cold deaths here. Anyone else from Tennessee and care to share your experience? I expect them to get no taller than 10 or 12 foot tall.

Ceroxylon quindiuense in Myrtle Beach?

Since there is very little information about this palm on the internet, it is hard for me to tell if it is possible to grow this palm in my climate. I hear that it likes cool humid summers which is definitely not my climate. But I do have a very cool north facing wall that is quite wet. I have an Ostrich Fern there which isn't suppose to grow in my climate and is thriving. So does anyone think that I could pull it off at my north facing wall? I also don't know the light requirements too, because it is very hard for me to find info on it. My northern wall gets full morning sun. Not sure if that would be enough for it.

My Central Utah Palms
by Gator- 5 replies

As fall starts to transition to winter I just wanted to show yall how my palms fared this summer. The Trachy is just over 7' ( tallest front ) and has a good 4 foot of thick trunk. I have a little foil bubble wrap tent I have been putting over it during bitter cold snaps..but im going to have to re-engineer it due to the Trachys size. My 2 Washingtonias have grown well this summer. They started out with 3 fronds and now they have a good 6,7. This will be their 1st winter in the ground. Im going to put a spotlight on each one and a bubble wrap tent. My Sabal Minor I got from Northeast Ohio Palms seems to be doing ok. It has…

I have a very healthy Livistona decora in zone 7a central NJ (I know, I'm on borrowed time with this one). I have had it growing against my foundation/house for over 2 years. Last year I used a rolled up vinyl lattice fence with a kids plastic pool as a cover with C9 lights on a thermocube. Well this palm has gotton so big (the base is starting to swell in preparation of a trunk) and is about 5 ft tall now. I know if I cut off all the fronds it will be much easier to protect but I will be cutting off its energy/food source. I know lots of cold hardy palm people do this with large Sabals and Windmills but doesn't it damage them or set them back the next summer since the…

Jubaea X Yatay freshly planted
by Fallen Munk- 8 replies

I just planted this little guy and took a pic for reference. Back in December I ordered two "band sized" palms from Patrick, a Jubaea X Yatay, and a Yatay X Jubaea. When they arrived, the Y X J was twice the size as the J X Y. I assumed that the Y X J would be the faster grower. Not so. The J X Y caught up to the Y X J so I planted it in the ground first. I'll get to the other one when I choose a spot for it. Should be off to the races now.

Mule palms in 8a Atlanta
by GApalm- 1 follower

I purchased two large mule palms from an Atlanta dealer he said they were from Texas and had survived the big freeze in 2020. however; I have read on here that they may struggle in 8a and are rather more like a zone 9 palm. They are tall beasts with thick trunks and lots of lush foliage. They do have trunks similar to a butia than the queen palm. They have been in the ground about five months and have both flowered with seed pod. One is bigger than the other, I’m not sure how old they are. I am worried about the cold hardiness of them, I want to make sure I have everything covered, should the weather dip below 25-30f. I purchased some heating cables from Amazon,…

Will potted Trachies and Sabal keep growing indoors?
by ColumbusPalm- 1 follower

Hey All, I have about 7 in pots I will bring in, probably in the next few weeks. My indoor conditions have giant south windows and I have a metal halide on a track for my houseplants. Humidity is usually 50-60% and temp 66-74F. Are these favorable enough conditions that I could expect to see any growth during the winter indoors? More so, should I keep watering them on a nice schedule to keep them active or still scale back? Thanks in advance! Nate

Let's see some survival/recovery photos, Ive seen good numbers of photos and posts here of recovery in some northern/central TX regions but not so much in the RGV, South Padre Island, etc area. How Much Water
by stopsail- 3 replies

Hello, I planted two Sabel Palms in Topsail Beach NC.. They are 12-15ft tall. Planted in Dec 2020. The contractor planted them in 100% sand. One tree has lived while one died. They replaced the dead one back in Sept of 2021 and now it has died. They state I am giving them too much water. I have a drip irrigation. I watered everyday for the first week, every other day for the second week, every third day for third and fourth week, then once a week. They are getting about 50 gallons once a week unless it rains. Question 1: What can I do better when I have it replaced for the 2nd time as far as watering? Questions 2: The 2nd Palm that is still alive, can you…
