Trying Sabal Minor in the Four Corners region 1 2 3

Over the last couple years I've been setting up my yard with native plants. Various cactus, desert shrubs, yuccas etc. I quite like palms though, and obviously there are no shrubby palms native to the southwest. So it seems the next best thing is Sabal Minor. Here's hoping it will survive. Ignore my half finished path way...

Some windmill palms around my area....
by Zone7Bpalmguy- 1 reply
I'm trying to share a video. Seems like it worked easy enough after checking out the "beginners forum" and attempting a trial run. These particular windmills have been here for around 15 years and were planted as decent sized specimens. They have grown well though, but aren't the tallest or the oldest I've seen around here. Thanks all.

Potting up seedlings

So probably 10 years back I purchased a plant delights Dick Douglas Delight hybrid chamaedorea (radicalis x oreophila) I have no other fruiting chamaedorea and I live on an isolated 5 acre parcel. It produced multiple seeds and I decided to go ahead and see if they might sprout, well I have many now germinate. My question is how soon is appropriate to plant these up into individual pots, is it best to wait for the first cotyledons, so done photosynthetic capabilities. All thoughts comments welcome.

Chamaedorea carchensis/benzei

Hi all, does anyone know a source of seeds from Chamaedorea carchensis or aka Chamaedorea benzeni. These appear to have been quite popular in California and so I was wondering if some of you might get seeds from this you would share or sell. Looks like it could do well in a large container and give a nice look. Do people have in temp data on this also, how cold has it taken and damage etc. thanks in advance.

North Florida Queen Palms, zone 9a expanding 1 2

Posting this topic in Cold Hardy since it's about northerly zone expansion. Depending what cold hardiness zone map you refer to, the Lake City, north Florida area would mostly be an 8b or barely 9a zone. Lake City is about 30 miles north of Gainesville, FL. Easily found on the map where I10 & I75 intersect... that's pretty darn north Florida. Looking around the area I was surprised to find as many Queen Palms thriving. As a reference, we all know how bad the 2010 winter was and the 2018 winter had temps that remained below freezing for hours! In addition, this area experienced sleet (but no actual snow fall) this past winter. I captured some pics of Queen Palms…

i opened one of my palms last week to find all this white stuff on the fronds but only the front. it isn’t raised or anything but at first it wouldn’t come off until i added treatment to it. it’s not on the second palm but not as bad. when i try to use picture this plant app it doesn’t say anything is wrong w it. could it be from the wilt stop i used leaving marks on the fronds? also yes ik the fronds dont look so hot they always look like this after i open them and our lawn mower guys cut up this palm in the summer so its recovering. it looks better today than it did last week but idk i feel like its just weird that its only on the front and is also on the other palm.

Hey, everyone. I wanted to check to see the thoughts on an issue on my Phoenix sylvestris. Planted last March and it was a few cold nights and got a few black spots on the leaflets but nothing too serious. This winter I have been protecting it when it gets to the mid twenties but not higher than that. Anyway there's two spears growing that seem fine but the two youngest friends have seemingly died. One had just really started to open. I read that new fronds are more hardy than older fronds so I'm wondering if I'm dealing with cold damage or something else.

Bridgeport Sabal Palmetto CT Notable Trees 1 2 3

I was on youtube yesterday night and found possibly the most northern semi longterm Sabal Palmetto on the east coast. The video referenced CT notable trees so I went to the site and found out more about the palm. I am still dumbfounded. It sprouted from seed in 2005 and was planted in its current location in 2009. It is still alive considering the video was made this fall. I am absolutely dumfounded at how this palm is still alive and doing well at that. it doesn't look like it even gets any protection during the winter when I looked at old streetviews. Here is the CT notable trees information about the palm. there is also a Windmill palm on the site. http…

Hello, I am new to this forum but have been following it for a while now. I am a palm enthusiast that has been intrigued by palm trees ever since I noticed that Las Vegas, NV has them back in 1999. I was just a freshman in high school at the time and from then I would visit often as a lot of my family lived there. I then started going down to El Paso and Las Cruces with my dad who was a Regenal Truck Driver and noticed that there were palm trees down there. Even as far north as T or C. In summer of 2003 I noticed a palm tree in Albuquerque for the first time. I remember that I took a double look and thought to myself "did I just see a palm tree?" I turned around and…

Mislabelled trachycarpus at the garden centre?

Hi all, I spotted this trachycarpus at my local garden centre, it’s marked as a fortunei but I am wondering with the long petioles and very deeply split leaves whether it might be a nova - in which case I’d have to snap it up… am I just getting over-excited?

Washingtonia filifera damaged. Will it be fine? 1 2

Hello, today I tried to unwrap my Washingtonia filifera, but I found it damaged. It was completely covered with frost cloth for almost three months and the lowest temperature it experienced was -9°C or 15°F for two nights in a row. The fronds were dry and bent to the side, so I had to cut them off. What did I do wrong and most importantly, will it be fine? Location: A small town approximately 30km from Bratislava, Slovakia (Zone 7b/8a).

Kingsport TN Sabal Minor
by Palmerr- 11 replies

Hello! While i was on my way to my school in VA I saw a sabal minor (A very large specimen) On my way there. It is a zone 7B 7A 6B area that has seen some very cold temps i might want to try and collect the seed from it as it is planted near a little Mountain Road stop planted in the wild by a person most likely. there may be some seedlings under it so Ima try and get some during Break and i will plant em in Lexington and see how they do. Anybody know if sabal minor could even grow in that area without any protection in the open (I also saw a very nice 3 ft trunk sago palm unprotected in 7a-7b Appalachia which was really cool. Of course... Lots of Bananas also saw some Y…

Chamaerops and Washingtonia seed questions
by NMPalmjunky- 6 replies
I picked up some Chamaerops and some Washingtonia seeds from Encanto Park in Phoenix which has possibly the greatest concentration of palms anywhere in Arizona. Can someone tell me if all seeds look viable? The med seeds are all the same size, but they vary in color from red to purple to blue. The Washingtonia seeds are also the same size, but some are blue and some are tan. I assume that the tan seeds are sterile, but please let me know if they could still be sprouted.

Palm Hardiness in Roswell NM?
by gdumea- 2 replies

Hi all, I know about various palms around Roswell, the Taco Bell Washingtonia hybrid that looks to unfortunately now be dead, and the W Albuquerque St Washingtonia Filifera, but does anyone know how reliably these palms grow here? I bought some Washingtonia Fayetteville seedlings that hopefully can live without protection. I saw about 6 palms driving around 300 E Albuquerque in front of this guy's yard, Google Street view reveals that they've been around since at least 2007. What luck do you all think I'll have with Washies here?

Palm ID and Germination
by Manalto- 12 replies

This handsome palm sits in the parking lot at the entrance to Crawford Park in Mobile. Is it Livistona chinensis? If so, how hard is germinating seed for this palm? It's loaded with seed and there are several (doomed) seedlings under the mother plant. If not, can you tell me what it is? I can return and get additional close-up photos if necessary.

Trachycarpus variants hardiness

Hi all, Early this year I purchased the following Trachycarpus seedlings: Trachycarpus Fortunei, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus, Trachycarpus “Takil”, Trachycarpus “Kumaon”, Trachycarpus Princeps “Stone gate”, Trachycarpus Ukhrulensis and Trachycarpus Wagnerianus x Fortunei. For these variants I have read various claims, the Manipur and Princeps would be less cold tolerant and the Takil and Kumaon would be more cold tolerant compared with the normal Fortunei. Does anyone have personal experience with these forms? Is the difference in cold hardiness significant? Stefan

Different sources on the internet say that both of these rattan palms are able to handle temperatures between 20-23F. So I guess these are the hardiest calamoids? Does anyone have these species? How true is this?
