I see these at home depot constantly and I know I've seen a couple big ones in Laredo. Anyone here ever try this? Heard they like wet clay. Would be kind of like reverse zone pushing.

Any tips on growing Jubaea chilensis from seed?

Hi, I'm quite new to the palm world, I've got like 8 Trachy. fortuneii seedlings which are doing well in pots and a bigger Chamaerops planted in the ground. I've fallen in love with Jubaea's tho, so I ordered 30 seeds from rarepalmseeds. I have an idea on how to germinate these, I know I must soak them for like 2-3 days and then keep them warm and humid, but if any of you have any tips on germinating them it would be great to hear those! Also, let's say they germinate, in the first year of their growth, can I keep them outside on a southfacing balcony in winter? We used to have quite harsh winters but in the last 10-12 years our winters have been very mild, with the l…

Anyone have any pictures of native Sabal minor at just about their fattest northern ranges? I want to see more Sabal minors at their limits, inspired by this awesome thread: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/52756-sabal-minor-in-habitat-mccurtain-county-ok/

Will this continue like this forever?

Ever since 2021 happened my city gets a freeze every year. Before 2021, events like that used to be super rare, they happened once in like 4-8 years. Now it seems like this will keep happening forever nonstop. Have patterns like this one ever happened in the past? Are "nonstop" years of freezes a sign of a future warm period?

We recently planted Sylvester Palms in our yard. They were bundled for three weeks and we finally unwrapped them today. Two are standing tall and strong while other seems weepy and more yellow. The palm of concern also looked very weepy when bundled while other two always stood tall in the ropes. Is there cause for concern? Any suggestions of what to do to make this one look healthier? First image is the one I’m concerned about compared to second image of one that looks stronger and healthier.

Hi all, I finaly managed to get hold of some Sabal Brazoriensis seeds but I wasn't expecting them to be this large. I've only germinated S. Minor and "Lousisiana" before and I've never had them this size. Can anyone confirm that Brazoriensis has such big seeds? Picture below shows the seeds next to Sabal minor seed. Thanks in advance! Syagrus romanzoffiana growth speed

I looked for a good example of this subject on this forum but found none so I thought I would help document the speed of the ever popular queen palm. There have been many comments over the years on how fast this palm is and there's an excellent example from an old thread from the main forum. I'll follow up with what I have experienced here in the RGV of deep south Texas. Purchased this palm as a 7-gal with approximately 9' overall height in spring, 2023. Here it is a year and a half later in October 2024 with the container next to it for scale. It's approximately 13' overall height now - roughly 2.67' per year! The base has really beefed up too…

Sabal updates - the seedlings grow
by Dartolution- 7 replies

With all this talk of arctic blasts, or polar vortex's, or snow bombs... whatever "pop" word we are using these days to describe these absolutely ghastly events I am reminded of past winter sowing projects from years past. So, as a break from the cold today - I took some glamour shots (more like unglamorous) of all my sabal seedlings as they've grown, many that have been sent to me by other IPS/palmtalk members. Apologies in advance for the absolutely crap photos - I wish I bad a better spot to photograph palms! urgh. First up is good ol' Sabal palmetto. This was a washed up germinated seed at Panama city beach after a storm back in August of 2019.…

Good morning everyone. There are a lot of discussions on here about the upcoming cold weather again but I want to be optimistic and start thinking about spring. February and March is when the first application is recommended of products like pre-emergents and weed and feed combinations to control weeds and keep lawns looking great. If anyone has palms planted in the middle of lawns that have seen these products, does it hurt palms? Should I keep it a safe distance away? Any recommendations? I would appreciate anyone’s experience on this. Thank you.

Better to leave snow on fronds or brush off???
by Zone7Bpalmguy- 1 follower

I'm pretty confident that a good snow is on its way. Temps won't be a problem for the windmills, lows only in the mid teens or so but I wonder about the weight of the snow and the fronds. Forecast is about 5-8" possibly. Snow is an insulator but will a heavy wet snow bend or break the fronds? Would I be better off in sacrificing the insulation value to keep better looking fronds? A few years ago we got a decent bit of ice but I kept knocking the ice off. In the long run I think I beat up some of the fronds, trying to keep it off. Thoughts anyone? Thanks.

Albuquerque Visit Palms - More

After seeing a past, blurry closeup of a palm trunk from the ABQ Zoo, and rumors of Sabal Mexicana there, I had to look for myself yesterday. Their map: https://www.cabq.gov/artsculture/biopark/documents/zoo-map_oct-2024.pdf . Palms at the alligator exhibit in the reptile area: Sabal mexicana Sabal minor (?) pre-Photoshop . A few of many other palms that looked good at the zoo: Some of the many Trachycarpus fortunei That's even a Sabal minor towards the bottom of the last photo. On a long-ago visit to the ABQ zoo, I remember those were very common, a number reproducing. I was already i…

Snow day in Georgia today

Blue moon event today but it actually happened, anyone in North Georgia caught way more snowfall though and possibly other states nearby but I really don’t know. This is the most snow we have seen for atleast 10 years. Chamaerops will shake it off like it’s nothing but I put the frost blankets over the Sylvesters, as I have had to do every night basically for the past week or two with this unusually cold winter. Hopefully they will actually survive this winter as 2 or 3 of them out of 4 look very beat up. How is everybody holding up through the storm? Good luck to everybody else out there, at least the temperatures aren’t that cold as we have stayed above 30 degrees.

Can a needle palm be grown in northeast Ohio with minimal protection?
by Ohiopalmloverz6- 1 follower

I’m in zone 6 in northeast Ohio, I love tropical gardens and would love to have a needle palm because I heard they are zone 6 hardy, I am willing to protect it minimally in temperatures get below 0f which is becoming rarer as climate change comes through. Will it work? We usually only get down to -1f to -5f in winter.

Sabal minor 'Lawrence' from Kansas Survived -16F

I've just come upon a lead to a new cold hardy Sabal minor discovered in Lawrence, KS in 2013 where it survived -16F in the ground unprotected. I don't possess it myself and don't plan to get it but it is just put up for sale on a one-time basis by a Seller not belonging to IPS. I can't mention the name in the forum but if you are seriously interested in this Sabal, PM me and I will give you info and a link. I copied the following info from the listing: Zones: 6b to 10b, possibly colder Dormancy: Evergreen Height: 36" tall Culture: Sun to Light Shade Origin: United States

Any idea where I can find these palms in a decent size? Seeds and tiny seedlings probably take forever to grow. Anywhere I can find a gallon or so? That would probably be easier to establish.

South Bethany Beach DE Sabal Minors

Wanted to show ya’ll the progress of my unprotected Sabal Minors in Delaware. I think they’ve been in-ground for 8-years or so. Both are the same size (statue in the 2nd pic is 18” for scale) Bases are about 12” in diameter and, of course, no visible trunk with Sabal Minor. There are “volunteers” popping up all over the place. Seems to me, this is a palm that could assimilate here with no problem. I have 3 seed sprouted offspring in my backyard in Virginia from these two. I’ll send pics of them at some point.

I had heard a couple of years ago about Spanish moss growing out in the blackwater cypress creek in Wendell NC, only 10 miles from Raleigh. Originally I had assumed it was carried there by birds as the actual range of Spanish moss starts somewhere along the Neuse River in between Smithfield and Goldsboro, and birds are known to carry it inland. I finally got the chance to kayak out there and I found it, clumps of it. I only managed to grab 1 picture, there were smaller clumps in lower branches of the cypress trees as well! Some still green! It could only mean they reproduced rather than bird drop off! Thoughts? We really need updated maps on plant/animal ranges. …

Sabal Birmingham vs Brazoriensis
by OriolesRock100- 1 follower

As title states - trying to find the differences between these two Sabal minor x palmetto hybrids to determine which I will try here in Zone 7A. Information that I could find online was limited, but it seems like Brazoriensis is more cold hardy and faster growing, but Birmingham has more palmetto-like characteristics. Would both of these palms do well in Zone 7A unprotected (at least for most part)? I’m thinking I will buy seedlings this winter with intentions of eventually putting them in the ground this spring or next spring. Would appreciate any experience from any Sabal experts on here Thank you!
