Anyone else use the lights on the palms for Christmas decorations until you need them to wrap the palms? I just put lights on all 10 protected palms today and it took 3 hours. I turn them on/off via my phone to add holiday decor to my backyard until the palms need to be wrapped. When they need to be wrapped I'll plug them into their individual thermocube which is taken off for now.

Phoenix canariensis impressive growth at 62N

Photos from my garden in Ålesund, Norway at latitude 62N. Phoenix canariensis planted in the ground this july close to the southfacing wall of the house. You can see some serious growth growth from july to october and this is even in the first year in the ground here in Norway! We have a very mild climate here, a zone 9A. Close to the ocean, heavily influenced by the Gulf Stream. To the east we got tall mountains sheltering us from cold easternly winds during the winter. There has been no frost so far this autumn! 😊 november 5th. And before you say something, the palm will be moved further away from the house next year - it is way to close 😄

Here is an update of my Washingtonia filifera 'TorC' palms for mid summer. The palms were planted in March 2013 as strap leaf seedlings. First pic is from June 2013 ~ 3 months in ground.

Hi, my name is Gabriel, this is a second account, my first account will pop up later in this post. Anyways I went to the zoo the other day and saw all the palm trees there. There is so much palm trees there, there is windmill palms sabal minors everywhere. By the alligator exhibit to the left of the entrance there is a little sabal Minor with seeds on them. By The Monkees there's a giant sabal that is 15 ft tall with loads of seeds on it, mabey a palmetto? Also next to it another sabal with seeds. Currently right now in 2022 they are building a new exhibit and there is a group of windmill palms that I believe made seeds because there's babies under it. I didn't get to take…

Date Palm barely survived last winter and is looking weak, should I take it indoors this winter?
by PashkaTLT- 6 replies

Hello everyone, The heating inside my winter boxes overloaded my power lane last winter (the coldest winter in at least 10 years) and turned off. I noticed it too late and lost 3 palms. Another one - pygmy date palm - barely survived (only 1 of 3 trunks survived) and is looking weak. Is it better to leave it planted and protect with a box & heating, or is it better to take in doors for this winter and wait until it recovers more (which may bring the stress of uprooting it)?

El Paso Jubaea
by Fukuoka Scott- 5 replies

I'm back in my hometown of El Paso for the first time in 7 years and of course went over to check on "the El Paso jubaea", which has graced a westside front yard for many years. It may not be as happy as it would be in the Bay Area but considering it's El Paso, it's thriving. My brother's CIDP on the other hand seems to be struggling. I suggest he set up some bubblers and fertilize it in spring...

Sabal Minor gold mine!

Ok, I was waiting to get a prescription filled and just wandering around town. The Senior Citizen Food Bank of all places....I stopped and hit reverse and went back. Asked if I could grab some seeds and got a nice little haul. Also wondering if y'all think any of these are transplantable because they're totally neglected and ignored. Also as far as germination goes, would a community pot with a baggie on a mat speed things up? Should I do the same with my Serena Repens seeds? Anyway, pics of some palms that I think are pretty even if nobody else cares about them here. And I picked that inflourence clean. There was only one other one a…

Queen palms in El Paso (8b-9a)?!
by Griego94- 1 follower

Just saw some crazy healthy looking queen palms today in El Paso, TX (one on the left that’s harder to see) and I thought I’d make an account to share after lurking this forum for over a year. I have seen a few around El Paso and in Juarez before but normally they are in rough shape or already dead. Last winter was particularly cold as it got down to 15 degrees one or two nights, but I feel as though the rock wall and the super dry climate (especially last year) may have saved these guys. Only minimal cold damage from last winter. They look well established, so does anyone know if queen palms are easy to grow in this zone? I doubt it, but maybe it’s more common than I thi…

Juvenile Trachycarpus wagnerianus at 50°N 1 2 3

I planted a juvenile 4 years old Trachycarpus wagnerianus, which I had grown up from seed in 2003, on 28 April 2007 outdoors in Heidelberg/Germany at 49.4°N. The following pics document the very limited growth and its struggle with long and hard freezes. Here are the photos of the first 4 years outdoors from 2007 to 2011. (1) first day in the ground (2007-04-28) (2) first winter outdoors (2008-02-03) (3) after the 3rd winter (2010-03-12) (4) the 4th summer (2010-07-19) (5) the 4th winter (2011-01-01) (6) the 5th summer outdoors (2011-08-20)

So this may seem like a silly question and I know palm trees stop or slow growth significantly when it starts to cool off. I planted this filifera back in March and it grew relatively fast all spring and summer but it seems to all but have stopped growing since early September and we still had nights in the 70s and highs in the 90s every day almost. It looks healthy as far as I can tell other than it decided it’s growing season was over for some reason. Is this odd, normal, does it look ok? I’m in 8A west Texas and filifera are quite common around here and get very large. Most seem to be used in xeriscapes where this one is in the middle of my yard and gets sprinkler wate…

In-N-Out Burger planted palmettos along Hartmann Drive in Lebanon as well as at their Franklin location. What kind are they? I'm worried that if they're standard cabbage palmettos, it'll be a needless waste of money on their part and possibly goad the spread of unduly repressive local ordinances beyond Memphis. I know maybe my fears are overblown to some degree, but still. Please sign and share this petition if you agree that In-N-Out needs to play it safe in Tennessee! https://chng.it/nXKr7VpqF8 Birmingham palmettos are cold-hardy to 5 degrees Fahrenheit, Brazoria palmettos to 0 and needle palms to -5, making them far better choices than the iconic cabbage palm…

South Texas Jubaea Squad

I now have 6 Jubaea chilensis seedlings and one Jubutia. I will likely keep these potted to at least 5 gallons before planting them in the ground along the forests edge. I am located just north of San Antonio, but at over 1,000 feet above sea level, my nights are cooler and my daytime humidity is much lower. I am hoping that these can survive my zone 8A or colder winters, and the Dallas area survivors have brought me some solace. The Jubutia is the 1 gallon pot on the left.

Beautiful Silvery Blue Hue in New Growth
by palmofmyhand- 1 follower

Hey guys I thought it was interesting to see that these two trachycarpus fortuneis that I planted this spring from 5 gallon pots have a bluish hue in their new growth. I have a pair of chamaerops humilis pair who also share this trait as well. Both couple of palms are grown in full sun here in Augusta, GA. Interesting to me how the old growth doesn’t show the blue hue but the new fronds do. I noticed the same thing with my new washingtonia robustas, showing that silvery blue appearance on new growth as well. It seems to stand out a little bit more on these trachycarpus though. I’m thinking this may be a full sun tomentum factor? I think that’s what other people have said…

It’s still here after several years. First noticed it when I lived down there in 2019/2020 and it’s doing well. This is the northernmost bizzie I have ever came across and the only one I have seen this far north. This is in the west side of Bluffton, by the university. Near the Jasper County line. First photo was taken a few days ago, second photo was several years ago.

Wanted to share a couple pics of my palms growing in an exposed valley with an elevation of 4000 ft in Southern Arizona Zone 8a where temps usually go down to 13F every year. The Butia and Uresana have been growing 6+ years with no protection and very little to no irrigation. The Sabal Mexicana was a gift from Dyers Nursery in Weslaco, TX and has grown 4 new fronds this year alone. The “weeds” are purposely left around the trunks to provide a living mulch and shade in the extreme heat. Pictured in order is a Butia, Med fan palm, Sabal Mexicana, Sabal Uresana, Washingtonia Filibusta, Phoenix Dactylifera, and a bonus Loqaut.

Hey! Anyone has experience in growing a lady palm planted outdoors in zone 7? Due to not having enough space inside I will plant my Rhapis Excelsa outside. I have experience in protecting not that cold hardy palms in winter with covering and heating. Few questions I have in mind: What light requirement does it need? What temperature can it outstand in winter? Somewhere I read it can stand -7C° Thanks in advance!
