Just thought I'd share my experience here in Accomack County on Virginia's Eastern Shore growing palms and cycads. We are at the colder end of Zone 8a with average winter minimum temps of 10-15°F but we do get a few winters every half decade or so where we might get a few days or a week of temps down into the single digits or below (-5°F). We are colder up here than down in Cape Charles or Virginia Beach. Roses in Cape Charles will still be blooming at Thanksgiving when up here all the trees including the pecans have already dropped their leaves. In Virginia Beach there's lots of spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) growing on the trees but here I only know of one woods…

Another 2021 Texas Coconut Survivor
by ahosey01- 3 replies

Found this today when I was taking my kids to a local park. It's off Southmost Road and Monterrey Drive in Brownsville. I only got a street view snip and not a photo because there wasn't really a good place to stop and get a picture. I didn't get a chance to talk to the owner, but I'm inferring it's a 2021 survivor because: a.) It's got like 10 ft of trunk b.) It's in a good microclimate c.) the house and the neighborhood aren't super bougie... and a coconut planted at that size since 2021 would have had to be trucked in and craned into the backyard. I feel comfortable making the assumption that the owners of that house don't have $15k to drop on a …

Hello everyone, In winter, I usually add Christmas lights or heating cables to all of my palm trees. This year, I planted a Needle Palm (previously in a 7-gallon pot), and I’m not sure if it needs additional heating or if a winter box with 0.5 feet of mulch will be sufficient. Could heating it just be an unnecessary expense? For reference, I’m located in New Jersey, zone 6b, about 5–10 miles from zone 7a. Kind regards, Pavel

Hello everyone, We have an abnormally cold winter here in NJ, USA, and the sensor in the Windmill palm's box showed 19F (-7C) last night. Should I add more heating, or she should be fine? Also, what minimum temperature inside the winter box would you allow for a Sago palm?

Cold Stunned Strap Leaf Sabal Seedlings
by NC_Palms- 2 followers

It has been a heck of a week here (like everyone else in the South) and right now many of my smaller palms are buried between 3 feet of snow. I have noticed on my Sabal mexicana, Sabal miamenisis, and to a lesser extent, Sabal minor seedlings that still have their strap leaves, they look very shriveled. As if it needed water. The coldest it has gotten was about 18F, which is about typical for where I live at in NC. But for the leaves, I am assuming this is just shock from the snow and below freezing temperatures, but should the strap leaves rejuvenate after things get warmer or should I worry?

Could warm water be a solution?

I've applied warm water on cold (5-7⁰C minimum temp) days to my more tropical palms so I obviously haven't seen a clear result. These are my "Final" and more accurate temperatures for these days with this incoming cold front. Could applying warm water during the night to my palms help them in any way?

My 6 year coconut tree in Houston
by Coconut Jared- 2 followers

There are not many people keeping coconut trees in Houston, so I would like to share mine. I bought 6 coconut trees in the summer of 2018. They were just sprouted coconuts back then. I live in Pearland Texas, inside Houston city limits. Of the 6 coconut trees, 2 live today. The 4 that died were in pots. 1 of the living ones is in a pot and is still quite small. But I will focus on the one that is in the ground. The attached pictures were taken this year during the freeze that got into the mid teens. The tree actually took 12 hours of 28-32 degree weather before I could get to it. After that it was wrapped up as you can see with a 1500 watt infrared heater pointed…

What’s your take on how this PNW Jubaea is doing?
by Moe Exotic- 21 replies

Hi Guys, Thanks for stopping by the thread. This Jubaea was planted in July ‘22 here in Kingston, Wa. Bought in a 24” box that was bursting at the seams. For the rest of ‘22 it grew at a glacial pace while it settled in. I gave it overhead covering from about Dec1 to Jan10 when we had a snow storm and a dip to 17F. Other that that it was unprotected. There was no major damage from the cold. Fertilized with spikes from Palms NW for ‘22. In ‘23 it put out 3 new leaves. some of the older leaves got tired looking but still had green on them so no leaves were removed that year. In ‘23 I used palmgain at 1/2 strength to fertilize. Last fert…

Any tips on growing Jubaea chilensis from seed?

Hi, I'm quite new to the palm world, I've got like 8 Trachy. fortuneii seedlings which are doing well in pots and a bigger Chamaerops planted in the ground. I've fallen in love with Jubaea's tho, so I ordered 30 seeds from rarepalmseeds. I have an idea on how to germinate these, I know I must soak them for like 2-3 days and then keep them warm and humid, but if any of you have any tips on germinating them it would be great to hear those! Also, let's say they germinate, in the first year of their growth, can I keep them outside on a southfacing balcony in winter? We used to have quite harsh winters but in the last 10-12 years our winters have been very mild, with the l…

Will this continue like this forever?

Ever since 2021 happened my city gets a freeze every year. Before 2021, events like that used to be super rare, they happened once in like 4-8 years. Now it seems like this will keep happening forever nonstop. Have patterns like this one ever happened in the past? Are "nonstop" years of freezes a sign of a future warm period?

We recently planted Sylvester Palms in our yard. They were bundled for three weeks and we finally unwrapped them today. Two are standing tall and strong while other seems weepy and more yellow. The palm of concern also looked very weepy when bundled while other two always stood tall in the ropes. Is there cause for concern? Any suggestions of what to do to make this one look healthier? First image is the one I’m concerned about compared to second image of one that looks stronger and healthier.

Hi all, I finaly managed to get hold of some Sabal Brazoriensis seeds but I wasn't expecting them to be this large. I've only germinated S. Minor and "Lousisiana" before and I've never had them this size. Can anyone confirm that Brazoriensis has such big seeds? Picture below shows the seeds next to Sabal minor seed. Thanks in advance!
