What palm should I try in zone 6 in Ohio?
by Ohiopalmloverz6- 9 replies

I've seen so much different results all over the internet and it seems in my area, the three that will grow best is either Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Sabal minor, and Nannorhops ritchiana. Which do you think will grow the best? I'm not counting on Nannorhops to do the best since we get lots of annual precipitation. But, it might work.

Before and after photos...
by fr8train- 2 replies

I've recently picked up a new bike, and I've been riding around the area snapping photos, and that made me wonder how the palms I'm seeing made it through the big freeze of 2021. Then I looked further back and I was surprised at just how fast these can grow, especially given how terrible the soil is in this area (Boerne/Fair Oaks Ranch). The first palm is 2024 vs 2011. The second is 2023 vs 2016! It's very impressive how fast Sabals can grow here. Feel free to add your own photos too.

Short, Hardy, Palm Recommendations? 1 2

Any ideas for 8a palms, that would stay under ~4 feet tall? Aside from Trachycarpus nanus and Brahea moorei, which are both about impossible to find... Looking for things to put in front of my house, that would not obscure the front porch. I am open to non-palm recommendations as well. BLE's/non-deciduous. Thank you.

Trachycarpus princeps germination
by ShadyDan- 24 replies

I received 40 T. princeps seeds in the mail today. Seems to be no general consensus on the the best method for germinating these yet, at least what I was able to dig up. Wondering if anyone who has germinated them before can impart their wisdom on me? Specifically, what medium did you use, bottom heat yes/no, did you pre-soak the seed before hand etc… I’ve grown many, many T. fortunei seeds before using a 50/50 peat perlite mix with no bottom heat. I figure the T. princeps might benefit from bottom heat as they come from a slightly warmer climate?

I almost lost my Fayetteville , NC Washys

It's hard to keep plants well watered in the winter especially if the plants are in a pot that's too small . I checked on these a month ago and was pissed at how bad they looked . I wasn't even sure they were alive . I killed one of the 3 I had last winter from it getting too dry too . I added some soil and they are getting some sun now , so I think they will be OK till I plant them out in a few weeks . A little fertilizer and epsom salts will get them moving again . Of course being planted will really make them happy .

temporary palm greenhouse
by Coconut Jared- 2 replies

Anybody ever tried building a greenhouse around a palm tree for cold temps? I am toying with an idea to put 4 t posts in the ground around my coconut palm. Put 20 ft pvc over the t mosts. The elbows on the ends of the pvc to meet all 4 in the middle with a 4 way fitting to build the structure. Then wrap in 10 mil greenhouse plastic.

Impulsive purchase...

Took a car ride this weekend to the West Islands to my favorite greenhouse. Found this palm hidden in the back, totally forgotten and neglected. It's a palm that's for sure 🤦 it does have a heel so it's probably sabal! I'm thinking it died and regrew, since it's growing from two sides. It's fronds are huge, next to it, is a 3 gallon minor for size comparaison. I love to have, your input on what this could be. Have you ever bought something just for the purpose of saving a palm?

Washy growth in winter
by WSimpson- 10 replies

My Washy has grown its new spears quit a bit since cutting all the fronds off back in that one really cold snap in January . I got down to 15F but I saw some predictions as low as 12F for that night , so I decided I better protect it though it probably would've survived 15F . Pictures before the cold and pictures taken today below : Here it is back in January : Here it is today and pushing the better part of 6" -12" of growth :

My Trithrinax Campestris is suckering & creating a triple. This happened before & i just hacked it off but now I'm wondering whether to keep it? Its growing out in a weird area away from the other 2. Should I leave it be for a bit or chop it off? Does anyone have examples of theirs doing this & how it eventually will look? Please post pictures of yours & how you decided to let it grow.

My palm survived!
by gdumea- 6 replies

So long story short, I bought a palm from Eastside Nursery in El Paso that was marketed as a California Fan Palm, but because of the lack of abundant strings, the white wooly leaf base, very brown stem placement, and aggressive spines, I really think I got some kind of Mexican fan palm dominant hybrid (Washy Filibusta)? Well anyway, it survived its first year in the ground, completely unprotected in the high desert of Carlsbad, NM. First pic is from January after the 9 degree night. Just gave it a trim for new growth support, and it's already starting to push out new fronds. Mediterranean fan palm was in a protected area by my house and didn't have any burnt fronds at all…

Butia x Lyto

I want to plant mine out in Spring. I think barring another wild winter event, it'll be ok here and I know it took Palmageddon to kill @Matt N- Dallas's. One question though - since I've been back at my mom's house AKA feral cat colony, it's been knocked over 3 times and had significant amounts of soil knocked out of the pot and I think some roots broken. Would this hinder it? It's already been brought back inside a few times due to cold temps and rain, too, and I'm planning to protect it from the cats with one of those tomato wire cages. I know that it being in a pot is also hindering growth, too and losing tons of soil def doesn't help.

Decided to start a thread to keep track of the growth of these two hybrids that I got from Patrick Schafer on December 5th. yatay X jubaea and jubaea X yatay. The smaller of the two is the jubaea X yatay and it took some damage in shipping but it's doing fine. The yatay X jubaea is the bigger of the two and it also has some damage from the tag being tied tight and high up on the meristem. Leaves are coming out a bit deformed from that, but it will grow out of it. They are putting on some good growth in the three weeks since they arrived. First photo is right after they arrived and I potted them up on Dec. 5th, second photo is today, Dec 27th. They went full pinnate…

I got a chance to visit Monterrey, Mex for my in-law wedding. It is more like a palm oasis trip for me. I found all the usual suspects: Washington robusta, sabal mexicana, queen, phoenix and a weird indoor royal palm. Unfortunately ,I still haven't found the native brahea. 😀

high humidity and winterized Mexcan fan palm
by vistaprime- 1 follower

Repost: Do I need to be concerned about the high humidity my Mexican fan palm is showing while it's boxed up for winter. it's been hitting over 90% while the mule palm only 10 feet ( about 3 meters) away is showing humidity in the 70's on average. The crown of the Washingtonia was sprayed with copper fungicide before boxing up and I am scratching my head why both palms are showing such different humidity readings when they are so close together. Today the humidity in the box hit 97% in the box. I read online that leaves can actually turn brown and dry due to high humidity? Should I be overly concerned. thanks.

Washingtonia filifera damaged. Will it be fine? 1 2

Hello, today I tried to unwrap my Washingtonia filifera, but I found it damaged. It was completely covered with frost cloth for almost three months and the lowest temperature it experienced was -9°C or 15°F for two nights in a row. The fronds were dry and bent to the side, so I had to cut them off. What did I do wrong and most importantly, will it be fine? Location: A small town approximately 30km from Bratislava, Slovakia (Zone 7b/8a).

My friends were visiting Puerto Rico and asked if they could get me anything. I asked them to get some seed from Sabal causiarum. I've never seen seed from this palm, but according to the description these are not right. Am I wrong? Any guesses what they might be?

Hi all, And thank you in advance. I'm moving and will be putting in a pool. I have two mule palms that I will plant on two corners. I was thinking of putting mules on all 4 corners and then having shorter 2-3 feet tall in between them ish. I will provide lots of protection because I like to zone push. I have fallen in love with the look of Livistona Chinensis and Mexican Fan Palms, and was wondering if there were any shorter palms with that super glossy shine that are fan types. I will be in zone 8.

CIDP hardiness? 1 2

I live just down the street from this CIDP, I assume, in Shreveport. I have watched this for thirteen years now and it always refoliates. We were in the big freeze with Texas and it bottomed out at 1F, and below freezing for a week. It's got a good trunk going. I wonder what can do it this thing in! How unusual is it to survive this far north and inland?
