Snow day in Georgia today

Blue moon event today but it actually happened, anyone in North Georgia caught way more snowfall though and possibly other states nearby but I really don’t know. This is the most snow we have seen for atleast 10 years. Chamaerops will shake it off like it’s nothing but I put the frost blankets over the Sylvesters, as I have had to do every night basically for the past week or two with this unusually cold winter. Hopefully they will actually survive this winter as 2 or 3 of them out of 4 look very beat up. How is everybody holding up through the storm? Good luck to everybody else out there, at least the temperatures aren’t that cold as we have stayed above 30 degrees.

Can a needle palm be grown in northeast Ohio with minimal protection?

I’m in zone 6 in northeast Ohio, I love tropical gardens and would love to have a needle palm because I heard they are zone 6 hardy, I am willing to protect it minimally in temperatures get below 0f which is becoming rarer as climate change comes through. Will it work? We usually only get down to -1f to -5f in winter.

Sabal minor 'Lawrence' from Kansas Survived -16F
by PalmatierMeg- 17 replies

I've just come upon a lead to a new cold hardy Sabal minor discovered in Lawrence, KS in 2013 where it survived -16F in the ground unprotected. I don't possess it myself and don't plan to get it but it is just put up for sale on a one-time basis by a Seller not belonging to IPS. I can't mention the name in the forum but if you are seriously interested in this Sabal, PM me and I will give you info and a link. I copied the following info from the listing: Zones: 6b to 10b, possibly colder Dormancy: Evergreen Height: 36" tall Culture: Sun to Light Shade Origin: United States

McCurtain Sabal Minors

Any idea where I can find these palms in a decent size? Seeds and tiny seedlings probably take forever to grow. Anywhere I can find a gallon or so? That would probably be easier to establish.

South Bethany Beach DE Sabal Minors

Wanted to show ya’ll the progress of my unprotected Sabal Minors in Delaware. I think they’ve been in-ground for 8-years or so. Both are the same size (statue in the 2nd pic is 18” for scale) Bases are about 12” in diameter and, of course, no visible trunk with Sabal Minor. There are “volunteers” popping up all over the place. Seems to me, this is a palm that could assimilate here with no problem. I have 3 seed sprouted offspring in my backyard in Virginia from these two. I’ll send pics of them at some point.

I had heard a couple of years ago about Spanish moss growing out in the blackwater cypress creek in Wendell NC, only 10 miles from Raleigh. Originally I had assumed it was carried there by birds as the actual range of Spanish moss starts somewhere along the Neuse River in between Smithfield and Goldsboro, and birds are known to carry it inland. I finally got the chance to kayak out there and I found it, clumps of it. I only managed to grab 1 picture, there were smaller clumps in lower branches of the cypress trees as well! Some still green! It could only mean they reproduced rather than bird drop off! Thoughts? We really need updated maps on plant/animal ranges. …

Is my miniature date palm dead? I'm in conway sc and we have had an unusually cold winter so far. Many nights in the 20s and I didn't cover them. For some reason I bought these thinking they were cold hardy. Thanks and don't beat me up to bad. Tim

Sabal Birmingham vs Brazoriensis
by OriolesRock100- 1 follower

As title states - trying to find the differences between these two Sabal minor x palmetto hybrids to determine which I will try here in Zone 7A. Information that I could find online was limited, but it seems like Brazoriensis is more cold hardy and faster growing, but Birmingham has more palmetto-like characteristics. Would both of these palms do well in Zone 7A unprotected (at least for most part)? I’m thinking I will buy seedlings this winter with intentions of eventually putting them in the ground this spring or next spring. Would appreciate any experience from any Sabal experts on here Thank you!

Jubaea Chilensis explosive growth

In a prior forum post the growth rate of a Jubaea Chilensis was discussed by many and is highly recommended. https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/19995-the-explosive-growth-ofjubaea-chilensis/?&page=4#comments In 1989 I planted two Jubaea Chilensis that were 5 and 7 years old. The following 6 pictures and graph shows growth rate of one of those palms, with the first picture taken in 2006. I could not find earlier pictures between 1989 and 2006 as they are packed away someplace in the pre-digital age. The first 20+ years a Jubaea palms growth is slow with each new frond or leaf emerging slowly and just slightly bigger but holding on and staying gree…

Why is Sabal Palmetto never discussed in conversation of best cold hardy trunking palms?
by OriolesRock100- 2 followers
Sabal palmettos are surprisingly cold hardy but never seem to be in conversations of cold hardy trunking palms - hardy to about 10°F which is only a couple degrees higher than the gold standard cold hardy trachycarpus fortunei. Is there a reason for this? I suspect it could be because of the slow growth rate or because of the requirement of hot humid summers for growth (which isn’t common in many places people are growing cold hardy palms). However, for the east coast of the US, I think sabal palmettos that are grown in and accustomed to the cold environment (not imported from Florida) would do well almost as far north as trachycarpus fortunei due to the hot humid summers…

Its that time of year! I posted a selection of palms that could survive zone 8. Beauty, toughness, or simple rarity. It all counts! Which one has gotten you the Ooohs and Aaaahs this year? A picture of your favorite would help, of course! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Trying Sabal Minor in the Four Corners region 1 2 3

Over the last couple years I've been setting up my yard with native plants. Various cactus, desert shrubs, yuccas etc. I quite like palms though, and obviously there are no shrubby palms native to the southwest. So it seems the next best thing is Sabal Minor. Here's hoping it will survive. Ignore my half finished path way...

Some windmill palms around my area....
by Zone7Bpalmguy- 1 reply
I'm trying to share a video. Seems like it worked easy enough after checking out the "beginners forum" and attempting a trial run. These particular windmills have been here for around 15 years and were planted as decent sized specimens. They have grown well though, but aren't the tallest or the oldest I've seen around here. Thanks all.

Potting up seedlings
by 8B palms- 1 reply

So probably 10 years back I purchased a plant delights Dick Douglas Delight hybrid chamaedorea (radicalis x oreophila) I have no other fruiting chamaedorea and I live on an isolated 5 acre parcel. It produced multiple seeds and I decided to go ahead and see if they might sprout, well I have many now germinate. My question is how soon is appropriate to plant these up into individual pots, is it best to wait for the first cotyledons, so done photosynthetic capabilities. All thoughts comments welcome.

Chamaedorea carchensis/benzei
by 8B palms- 2 replies

Hi all, does anyone know a source of seeds from Chamaedorea carchensis or aka Chamaedorea benzeni. These appear to have been quite popular in California and so I was wondering if some of you might get seeds from this you would share or sell. Looks like it could do well in a large container and give a nice look. Do people have in temp data on this also, how cold has it taken and damage etc. thanks in advance.

North Florida Queen Palms, zone 9a expanding 1 2

Posting this topic in Cold Hardy since it's about northerly zone expansion. Depending what cold hardiness zone map you refer to, the Lake City, north Florida area would mostly be an 8b or barely 9a zone. Lake City is about 30 miles north of Gainesville, FL. Easily found on the map where I10 & I75 intersect... that's pretty darn north Florida. Looking around the area I was surprised to find as many Queen Palms thriving. As a reference, we all know how bad the 2010 winter was and the 2018 winter had temps that remained below freezing for hours! In addition, this area experienced sleet (but no actual snow fall) this past winter. I captured some pics of Queen Palms…

palm disease?

i opened one of my palms last week to find all this white stuff on the fronds but only the front. it isn’t raised or anything but at first it wouldn’t come off until i added treatment to it. it’s not on the second palm but not as bad. when i try to use picture this plant app it doesn’t say anything is wrong w it. could it be from the wilt stop i used leaving marks on the fronds? also yes ik the fronds dont look so hot they always look like this after i open them and our lawn mower guys cut up this palm in the summer so its recovering. it looks better today than it did last week but idk i feel like its just weird that its only on the front and is also on the other palm.
