To Fertilize or Not To Fertilize?
by Georgia Mike- 5 replies

Hello, I just planted 3 Trachy Nanus, a Cham Humilis and a Sabal Minor in my front planter. Being freshly transferred from pot to ground, do they need a little bit of fertilizer? I do have Palmgain on hand I live in Central Georgia, on the line between zones 8a & 8b if that has any bearing. Thanks in advance! Mike

I am happy to say my Trachycarpus fortunei recovered from the spear pull. After the spear pull the fronds look extra blue and I'm guessing the fronds are fully mature now. They have small spines and they kind of hurt.

Washingtonia Palms Information 1 2

One of the most common palm tree in the world comes in different varieties , Filifera, Robusta or Filibusta ( hybrid ) . How much cold can it handle ? How leaf hardy is it etc etc etc ? This topic should be all about Washingtonias . Starting off with my collection with 4 Filiferas and 1 Robusta. Since they are still young it's hard to tell how "pure" they are but so far from my observations my Californias are Filifera leaning ( two of them I grew from seeds in 2022 / recently planted in ground ) and my Mexican is Robusta leaning .

I posted about this particular Washingtonia, which I believe is filibusta, in early February. I collected a bunch of seeds from the ground at the base of this palm, located at 944 Bragg Blvd, Fayetteville NC, and sowed them in a shallow Taco Bell take away container. I placed the container on a warming mat and two weeks later, I have a ton of baby washies. The parent palm has been in its currently location since at least 2007, based on the oldest streetview images available on Google. Since then, this parent plant has experienced multiple single digit temps, and multiple freezing precipitation events, with seemingly no protection or care at all. I'm hoping the offspring f…

Transplanting Mature Sabal Minor + Pushing it in 9a

We're about to start construction on a lot that has a lot of mature, beautiful sabal minors. Having grown them from seeds before I have such an appreciation when such large specimens in the wild. While the vast majority will be fine, there will inevitably be some casualties. From what I have gathered, the prognosis of any transplanted sabal minor is pretty much guaranteed death to the plant. I was just wondering if anyone has had any success trying this. If similar protocols for transplanting a trunked sabal palmetto with a larger, deeper radius around plant with immediate placement in ground is it worth a shot? I have a feeling its really a lost cause but wanted to ask …

Butia problem (and waggie)
by Imhotep1989- 1 reply

Hi, looking for some palm related help, Sorry for the rough annotations, hope it is understandable. Midlands, UK. Basically had a problem with my butia (and a waggie but more concerned with the butia) both been in the ground 3 years. It looks like the crown is getting smaller and smaller compared to my other one. It didn't look too bad last year, thought it was just a compact butia, but it may have suffered in winter even though it was 100% fine with zero damage in the big freeze winter the year before. It's growing, even before I treated it with peroxide a week ago (theres rot there), but the spears look really bad, there's 4 there atm and 2 semi unfur…

I am still working on finding a place for all of the potted palms I brought with me from Oklahoma. This poor thing has grown to a decent size (5 to 7 gal) twice now, only to be frozen back hard in those Oklahoma winters. I am considering planting it in a pretty narrow but wide bed between my back porch and our pool decking. I know it will grow larger and I should possibly look for a less crowded place. Eventually (many years from now) it will grow high enough to obstruct some of the view of the pool from our back door. (Though we would still have unobstructed views through large back windows. On the other hand, it will grow very slowly. I also plan on keeping it…

Sabal Minor and Banana 6A Massachusetts Planting
by Colin1110082- 23 replies

I planted Today I planted a sabal minor 3 gallon plant from northeast ohio palms today. It looks great and the fronds look great. I also have this banana but the thing is it has spider mites on it. This is a huge outdoor plant and is not a small indoor houseplant. What could I do to kill these quickly? Yesterday and the day before I hosed it down with water then applied miticide and they are still there! I might try that dish soap and rubbing alcohol solution as well. What should I be looking for when it comes to the eggs? I just don’t know how to kill them and I need help. Thank you

Mule Recovery
by Manalto- 22 replies
Last winter didn't seem any worse than the previous few, and yet damage to my mule palm was extensive. Because of this, I would consider the mule palm as marginal in zone 8B. It's my understanding that fronds should be left on the plant until completely brown because there is nutrient uptake until that point. As usual, I erred on the side of caution (i.e., procrastinated), and performed nine frondectomies, certain that they were good and dead. The remaining leaves have considerable damage. Only the two that emerged this year are solid green. It looks like it's going to be a long recovery if we don't have another winter like the last one!

Windmill palm closing up?
by Asa- 1 follower

Hey! New here to the palm talk. I just recently bought two windmill palms about 2 months ago. One is about 3 feet tall and the other about 2. I potted them on my porch in a 15-20 gallon pot each. I then made a soil out of peat moss, sand, decaying leafs, and potting soil. The bigger one is doing pretty well shooting out a new frond. The smaller one however is closing up a bit. I did recently pot it in a bigger pot and made the mistake of using old mulch and realized there were bugs including ants, centipedes and possibles other bugs. What should I do? I live in zone 7a Tennessee and it’s under some sun shades on my patio.

Hello folks... I live in Salem Oregon, USDA Zone 8b. I made my first trip to Raintree tropical nursery this morning. I took some cash and my checkbook. I was not sure what I wanted, but I hoped that I could buy some larger palms, rather than some in one gallon pots. I am 73 years old, so I don't have thirty or forty years to plant a smaller palm and watch it grow. I met Steve and what a nice person he is. I ended up with a 5 gallon Trachycarpus wagnerianus, and a five gallon Sabal minor. I told Steve I would be back when I had more money. I wanted to buy a larger Jubaea chilensis & maybe a Butia odorata/capitata. But the size of pa…

Windmill palm slowly dieing?
by KPoff- 14 replies

I’ve posted about this tree before. I think it might be slowly dieing but I’m unsure. I’ve probably just over reacted and over treated this after only being in the ground a month or so. At first I thought it was a fungus based on the spotting so I sprayed it with systemic from fertilome. Then I also sprayed it with copper fungicide. I also gave it a light dose of jobes palm fertilizer. I water it deeply 2-3 times per week. It gets 8 hours of sun each day in the blazing west Texas heat. I see windmills growing in full sun all the time here from little to big so I don’t know that’s the problem. Some of the older fronds turning black in the middle. Tips on new fronds turning…

Is this lady palm a goner?

This lady palm is one of the numerous palms I zone push at my location. Each spring, I usually the trunks down to prevent rot (since it always dies back), and they always will resprout. But this year, there is no sign of regrowth despite being alive. Is it possible it’s just gonna shoot out of the root ball or will I be shocked in a few weeks when I see new growth out of the stalks?

Queen palm growing in southern NC

Not sure if I got the image to load but this is a pure Queen palm in Wilmington,NC. I bought it at HD in 2012. It has lived indoors in various pots and locations until we moved here 4 years ago and planted it outside. It has survived winters on the south side of the house with the usual Christmas lights and wrapping on the coldest ( 19 deg F ) nights. It is impossible to protect the fronds so they burn extensively but come back as the weather warms. It is as high as the top of the roof now and the trunk is huge at the base. I'm posting it because I think it's notable for it's size at this latitude. The other two large plants are an Angel Trumpet and a Robusta that was ab…

A. cunninghamiana on the Atherton Tablands

Hi guys, I've been hiking in the Atherton Tablands in the last few weekends and loved it very much. I even had the opportunity to see a wild platypus doing his business with no care about Me. That was amazing. But, staying on topic, I've heard that there's a small and isolated wild population of Archontophoenix cunninghamiana growing at high elevation in the Atherton Tablands. This happen to be the population where the seeds collected by Inga Hoffman came from and that subsequently demonstrated a stronger cold hardiness than the average cunninghamiana in the big freeze that hit her garden. I'm so asking you any useful information on fi…

Real Good Looking Cold Hardy Palms

Hello, I recently visited Florida and I was inspired. I saw all the beautiful Palm Trees, and I wanted one for my home in Memphis. I have some experience with plants, but not much. I was researching what Palms could live here, and I found this site as well with all the information, but, the trees that are options were not good looking at all. Windmill Palm is the worst looking Palm tree I have ever seen, Needle palm looks like a bush and Dwarf Sabal Palm looks weird, and so does Jelly Palm. The only one I might think about is European Fan Palm. But, my real question is, I want some real good looking palms like the tall ones in Florida with nice fan leaves or the feather o…

Is this root rot?
by Colin1110082- 1 reply

good evening, I recently made a post because I’m really worried about the leaflets closing on my windmill Palm which I would hate to see die because I spent a lot of money on it. Is this root rot? I don’t know what rotten palm roots look like but I see new growth. The miracle grow palm soil I’m using is well draining because when I dug down into the pot it was pretty dry maybe a little moist but it poured last night and it defiantly wasn’t soaked down there. I hope the closing leaflets are planting shock because I got them bare root and I hope they open up soon. They get 4 hours of direct sun and u water every 2-3 days in 3 gal containers
