Needle in TX
by Keys6505- 2 replies

I grabbed this 7g Needle on clearance at Wally's last year (maybe the year before). It's spent it's time since in the nusery pot along my fence, so it's been in mostly shade. I just moved it out to the patio so it's in afternoon sun now, trying to stretch it all the way out to full sun. I know they say Needles can handle sun or shade, but can they handle all-day 100* plus blazing hot TX sun? I had a spot open up courtesy of the last freeze and want to put something there that's shorter than a full tree and requires less cold temperature maintenance and this guy fits the bill.

Trachcarpus Taylor Form vs a stiffer fronded Trachy ; and Nainital and Princeps ( green form )
by Will Simpson- 15 replies
I hate to say it but while Taylor forms evidently are incredibly hardy with large specimens growing in Raleigh for decades , they didn't handle my 6F very well . I have 3 Taylor Forms and they all look like the palm on the left . The palm on the right is a stiffer fronded form that looks much better . Wow , what a difference ! Will My Nainital did OK . Trachycarpus princeps ( green form ) had some issues . I don't know if it can handle 6F with damage or the microclimate is really good , but it has green spears and should do well in the spring . The more exposed fronds took a lot of damage whereas the lower fronds near the ho…

Lessons from the cold - post yours 1 2

Here is a few lessons I have taken away over the years - Have a plan/supplies to protect prize palms well in advance - don't wait till too late - Never trust the weather forecast on arctic cold - it can drop (It did in 2018 too). Mine dropped 8F lower than forecast on the same night in 2018 and multiple degrees this year - Have a generator for backup if heating palms - Use a wifi thermometer to test your setups and see that they are not getting too cold/hot - Don't trust C9 bulbs unless you know exactly how to use them - I know of about 5 cases of this just this year. They can be used BUT just in a certain way - Never think the palm is safe…

Hello everyone! I am curious about when a good time would be to completely remove the Box ( 2x4 frame and foam board insulation). It's getting closer to Spring and was just trying to think ahead. I opened the box up to vent it out and to check on the Palms (which look still great). I know that there is still a chance of frost here after Spring starts, but I was thinking of eventually maybe just throwing a Frost cloth over them (leave the C9 bulbs wrapped around them with thermocube) if it dips too much into the 20s. This is the first Winter that they are in the ground. Overall height is about 5 1/2ft to 6ft now. In recent years March had a ton of days wi…

Winter season palm recovery

I'm counting the days to March . After experiencing a cold winter with an artic blast with lows of 16,21,24,28 and freezing rain recently I like to show you guys the recovery process of our palms. This has been our palms first winter and it definitely was challenging and sad to see what they had to go through. Some of my palms completely defoliated like my Queen and Wash.Robusta but the good news is they all survived and recovering well thanks to our Texas sun . Our Wash.Filifera in the backyard lost 3 fronds .I'm not going to celebrate yet but I'm not going to expect another severe artic winter since we already got hit several times this winter. Enough is enough. The s…

by GabrielPalms2- 2 replies

I went to Belen New Mexico this week and I was going around and saw a California fan palm (Washingtonia Filifera) in Belen. It was about 8 ft tall and had cold damage on it. I didn't get to take a picture of it, but I do have the address if you want to see it. 135 Tafoya Rd, Belen, NM It's on the side of the house. Belen is zone 7a I think. It was planted around 2013-2016, shows google maps.

I posted this on EPS as well, but maybe someone can help here too? This was sold to me as T. takil years ago on ebay. These two are from RPS's seeds, I only kept 2. They were sold as Phoenix hybrids, but I don't remember what cross? I think this is roebelenii × ? And this one is theophrasti × ?

Spear pull - Trithrinax acathacoma
by Chester B- 10 replies
I planted this Trithrinax acanthacoma last spring, and as you can see it has a small trunk. I bought it knowing full well it was iffy in my climate, but it was so inexpensive that I had to at least try. The December arctic blast is what I feel really damaged it. 60 hours below freezing, two nights at 19F and the one day we only got to I think 24F as the high. Frost cloth was the only protection I used at that time. After uncovering most of the fronds were browned as you can see in the photos. Over the last month every time I looked at the spear, the color was off and I have applied copper fungicide at least twice. I wrapped it up ahead of this last batch of cold w…

Northeast first Artic Blast of 2023
by Alex Zone 5- 7 replies

Thankfully this will only last 2 days. The needle palm box has 150 mini lights running 24 hrs and one set of c9 (25) hook on a thermocube. 2nd picture is Saturday morning inside the box...the sensor is at the bottom left corner far from the bulbs 🤞🤞🤞 3rd is Friday at noon and the temperature continued dropping throughout the day.🥶🥶

There are some small unusual hardy palms for sale this Spring at Plant Delights nursery. I picked up one of each. The trachy is described at "a Vic Silver cross of Trachycarpus fortunei 'Wagnerianus' x Trachycarpus nanus." The Lisa is said to be 68% true to the desired phenotype. It's an opportunity to pick up some rare hardy palms. I don't think they will last long.

Long Island, NY Sabal Palmetto's Cold Advice
by Holloway727- 7 replies
Rough night last night here. My 2 Sabal Palmettos were doing great going into their 3rd summer in ground. Both growing and established pretty well. I do box and protect them with C9's and last night the thermostats in both boxes failed. I assume they blew the internal breaker from being on so long and never getting up to temp. we saw a low of 0f and -21 wind chill. By far the coldest night in the past 5-10 years here that I can remember as I'm about 1/2 mile from the Long Island Sound. I believe the boxes lost heat around 2am and I wasn't able to catch it until 530am. we I finally got into the boxes and got the lights back running 1 Sabal was at 7f the other was at 10f go…

Sharing some of my winter indoor palms.
by steve617- 7 replies

Thought I'd share a few pics of my indoor 7a winterizing palms. I raise mainly Trachycarpus and the colder hardy Sabal minors and have probably 50 pots in my greenhouse and that many inside. Here is a few if my lesser cold hardy palms. Just a few phoenix from seed, my butia pindo, a couple Trachycarpus, Bald Head Island Palmetto, a container of Sabal Louisiana, Bismarckia Nobilis, and W. Robusta, s. Blackburniana. I had the Blackburniana in my greenhouse but when we had the big Christmas freeze, I brought them inside. I paid a little bit for those. Sorry looks like some came in upside down.

Maybe I suck at using this forum - but I searched for this palm and couldn't find jack. Anybody got any info they'd like to share? Any photos of one growing? Any experience growing them in a dry climate or hardiness reports? I have a few more spaces for palms in my garden and have a few ideas of what to plant. Think this might be one of them. Would be great any info anyone has to share.

After the 6F I had on December 24th , I've been watching as to how well my various palms faired , and after about 1 month I believe the winner here is my Sabal palmetto . Below is a picture with all three visible . On the right is the Palmetto with just a little tip burn , and to the left of it is the Birmy with a little more tip burn , and the Trachy to the the left of that one shows shriveled fronds and severely burned fronds . It really looks like crap . I'll fertilize it in May and water it well in warm weather which should spurt a lot of new growth over the summer . Further left is a totally unfazed Minor and to the left of that is another Palmetto ( …

Trachycarpus Fortunei (Variant)
by steve617- 3 replies

I have a T. Fortunei that I've raised from seed. It rarely looses a frond. It's the only one I've raised that developed so quickly. I'm sure its a regular Fortunei. It will be 3 yrs old this summer. 1st pic was about 9 months old and produced a 3 split frond. The second pic was around a year old. Thanks for looking.

Question about concocting my own fertilizer recipe
by Jubaea_James760- 6 replies

Was thinking about going organic ( down to earth fertilizers ) this year with my palms & cycads & had a question. Everything would be in 5 pound increments, so if I add 1 fertilizer, lets say 6-2-4 & I add another, 8-5-8 does it compound to 14-7-12 or does it just equal out & add up the remainder?, if that makes sense to 8-3-8? Also, if anyone makes there own fertilizer from Down to Earth & cares to share they're recipe it'll be much appreciated. -James

Would a mule work for me? 1 2
by ZPalms- 1 follower

I just wanted to see the general consensus about whether getting a mule palm would be the right choice or if it would be a zone-pushing novelty. I've been reading that its hardiness goes down to about 16F degrees, I know that Butia palms are bulletproof here, I don't know of anyone who has lost a Butia or ever seen one dead. Would that be a good reason to try a mule palm, or would it be more susceptible to damage than a pure Butia?
