Have admired this palm (and 2 others nearby) for years. Need to get better pictures of it......but notice how ribbon like the fronds are. Too bad someone is not developing Washy's that have this trait .... it looks much more tropicalories IMO than your standard washy. Does anyone have pics of Washingtonia that are as much or more lax leaf than these?

Cold Hardy Palms in Dallas TX
by Cosmo- 4 replies
Was driving through South Dallas on the way to school and thought for a moment I had arrived in Margaritaville. At first the enormous Agave with an easy height of nearly 7' planted on the corner caught my attention and then I caught sight of the palms. The individual also owns the other 3 corner lots and has planted palms on all of them. He said many people believe this is a city park. Just on the one lot with his house he has 7 palms with companion agaves planted plus a lot more. That bright green encircling the palm are all volunteers. There are even some volunteers that germinated within the boots.

How about a Sabal Palmetto habitat thread? The wife & I hit the east end of Folly yesterday for some surf & a hike through the jungle. Lol! The Palmettos grow right to the surf line & many times will get washed out & will float out into the harbor & ocean.

Rhopalostylis Sapida Cold Tolerance/Hardiness - Any info appreciated! 1 2 3

So I've been scouring this site trying to find some mention of R. Sapida's, or the genus in general's, cold tolerance. Does anyone have any reports of this palm even having any damage in the cold and at what temperature? What is the lowest temperature anyone with this palm has seen? Also does anyone have info on cold hardiness of the different forms? I'm sure between the members on this board we could get a great idea of how much it can handle, any info is appreciated! If it is true that this palm can take sub 24 deg and survive then I am about to plant a triple! I was thinking of the R. Sapida Oceana - (im not even sure what that means? is that the one with whi…

Attached is a hardiness and cold tolerance index I have been working on, its not complete, let me know what you think? I have posted this here and not the freeze damage forum to to see if people think it would be worth working on this communal freeze damage and palm hardiness data base, i have used the trebrown website as a base for the list. This kind of database may already exist but is so I am not aware of it? Plant hardiness is not all about minimum temperatures, obviously some plants can tolerate wet frosts where others will only tolerate dry frosts and minimum temps do not take into account the duration cold temperatures of the daytime highs. Extra columns…

So I am going to be planting a young Sabal Palmetto at a place in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b. Some of you may have seen it in other posts but it is quite small. I dug it up from the woods, so I will be planting it if it survives. I will be adding little to no protection to it. What do you think?

I just bought this Windmill on discount from a local nursery and noticed that it seems to open two fronds simultaneously! 2 Spears come up at the same time and open. I have 10 palm trees in my North Carolina yard and none of them do this. What's going on? https://m.imgur.com/a/8gpt7

Mystery Sabal
by Laaz- 1 reply
- 1.1k views
Here's a few shots of my mystery sabal. Again, given to me by a old woman 10 years ago as a 5 gal tine plant. It now has over 6 ft of clear trunk & is double the size & spread of normal Sabal Pametto's. She said she collected the seed somewhere local but didn't remember where. The leaves have a almost Decora look to them & the growth far exceeds the native palmetto's.

Ribbon Palm sale and new addition
by The7thLegend- 2 replies

Over the weekend I was in Saint Augustine and drove by a nursery that had a 50% off palm sign by the road so thought I'd give them a look. They had Chinese Fan, Washingtonia Robusta and Ribbon Fans on sale. Always wanted to add a Ribbon to my collection and so I picked up this 30 gallon for a measly $75, regularly $150. They had some 15 gallons also if anyone is in the area and looking.

100% Truely Canadian

I was given a gift today, one of which is truly Canadian. A friend and fellow palm enthusiast stopped for a visit and garden tour today. We live on Vancouver Island, the largest island in the eastern Pacific ocean. His Butia capitata growing in Victoria, British Columbia, is a large flowering and fruiting palm. This in itself is a rarity in Canada, moderated by the Pacific ocean, is unique to what many people around the world believe is a land of ice and snow. Here we are mainly zone 8b to 9a and Butia can be grown to maturity. I have what is most certainly the first ever Butia (Jelly palm) preserve grown, made and packaged on Canadian soil. Behold a Canadian first, …

Thought I would start a thread on the Sabals I'm growing here. They are mostly smaller with a couple of larger ones. Hard to get clear pictures so sorry aboUT that.... The first two are: Sabal bermundana ( been great grower for me) really like the look of the split leaf. Sabal 'riverside' (this one has a bluish coloration) didn't know if that is normal for this cultivar

Trachycarpus selection for 7a turning to 6b
by David_K- 13 replies

Hello palmers, sorry for any problems, i am new to the Palm Talk. When i got interested into palms, my friend got too and he wants a palm for his garden. We've chosen trachy because they are most hardy and pretty beautiful. I dont really know which one is best. We live in the Czech Republic in the one of warmest climates in here. The zones here are 7a-6b, just something between. I wonder which one type should i get and how big. The orders are fast growing and tree-type. I thought the Tra takil bageshwar is good but, uno, i dont have palms on garden yet so and i am planning to put outside a washie, not a trachy Thank you for help and feedback.
