Nannorrhops Ritchiana germinating.
by siege2050- 9 replies
- 1.7k views
Have germination of the green form after about 2 weeks in damp sphagnum in a baggie at about 103/105F. Any advice on how to care for them? I read they grow fast in heat, slow in cold. It gets in the 100s here in summer and in the 90s for a long time, so hopefully that will help. I plan on growing them in my greenhouse that gets 110+ in summer for the first 3 to 5 years before trying outdoors to speed up growth, and to keep excess moisture out.

ready to give away Parajubaea Sunka....TOO SLOW. Help!
by Sandy Loam- 31 replies
- 1.9k views
I am so frustrated with my tiny parajubaea sunkha. It is about four years old and it hasn't grown at all. It's literally a statue. It's alive and healthy, but that's the only good thing I can say about it. I am getting pretty close to giving it away for free at this point. Should I hold out longer and wait? Am I doing something wrong? Its leaves haven't even divided yet. It still looks like a large strap seedling. It is planted in a semi-sunny location on an elevated slope. It has received abundant watering from mother nature, and was fertilized about 3 times by me. Where have I gone wrong? Help!

In a region where 17 degrees fahrenheit is possible once every ten years, which of these four palms is going to survive? (in descending order from most cold-hardy to least cold-hardy). Am I forgetting any similarly cold-hardy livistonas? Livistona Saribus is a bit less cold-hardy, isn't it?

Some nice weather... finally..
by SailorBold- 17 replies

Winter is on the way out... if the forecast models hold; it looks like we will be above 64f and sunny until at least Feb. 18! Low temps not too bad either...30's.. so Ill take it! I quickly looked around the yard and everything seems to be alright.. it was an 8b-ish winter with a low at 15f. I don't see any spear damages yet on Butias.. and the hybrids did quite nicely. It looks like the JxQ is fine also and may have grown a bit. There was certainly more damage last winter with a similar temp. It may not be over yet but I am going to enjoy the weather for now! it doesn't happen often. How is everyone doing ?

Sabal Louisiana germinating.
by siege2050- 1 reply

I bought 40 seeds and they have started to sprout after about 2 weeks on a bed of damp sphagnum. What is the best way to pot these up, watering, etc. What can be an expected growth rate in 5 years? What is the hardiness compared to just plain Sabal Minor? I chose these because they are supposed to grow faster even though they are less hardy? I will eventually be moving and will keep these in pots for at least 3 years as I have read they do not like to be disturbed.

Breeding cold hardy palms?
by SyaaniTemppu- 27 replies
- 2.7k views
Hello! I come from Finland, Kajaani. I've been asking in the chat if there's any cold hardy palms that could have a chance of surviving here (outdoors, over winter). But it seems like not even needle palm could do that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kajaani#Climate That's why I got this crazy idea of breeding cold hardy palm that could survive outdoors here. So few questions. Has anyone ever tried it? I know it would take many years. So are there any species that could produce new ganeration relatively fast when grown from seed? What would be the most potential specie/species to try out? Should be already semi-cold hardy specie(?) Is it even biologically possible in decen…

Alright folks, Alberto's cross is stepping out of the toddler phase and is starting to show some adult characteristics. The fronds are flat, rigid so far. The character is distinctive, but I don't think we're dealing with a mature look yet. What do you call this property of an offset pinnae tip. Every pinnae shows this:

Watering advice in winter
by BeauBlues- 16 replies

Hi all! This is my first post to this forum. I'm creating a sort of backyard paradise for me and the family. We have a large backyard in Corona, CA in zone 9b. I started planting this last summer. So far I have ravanea glauca, C. gigas, Pritchardia sp., sabal causarium, parajubaea microcarpa, bismarckia nobilis, roystonea princeps, and a few others. My question is, during the growing months, when and how much to water is obvious. But right now I'm clueless. Our nightly temps are usually in the low 40's to upper 30's. Sometimes we dip down to freezing and the upper 20's. I have essentially stopped watering. My Pritchardias are looking a bit sad. I can't tell if it's …

Tallest Livistona?
by Sandy Loam- 17 replies
- 2.3k views
From reading PalmTalk, I have discovered that Livistona Decora (aka. Livistona Decipiens) is the fastest-grower according to readership consensus. However, which Livistona is the tallest after about 20 years of growth? There is a Livistona Decora down the street from me, but it has remained the same size for many years now. A Washingtonia Robusta in its place would have been much taller by now. I am beginning to speculate that perhaps Livistona Decora reaches a typical maximum growth size which is not terribly impressive, despite its rapid growth rate. The Livistona Decora nearby, and others I have seen, tend to be about 20 feet tall or slightly less. I have nev…

Rhopalostyllis sp Chatham Islands

Rhopalostyllis sp Chatham Islands is very fast growing palm compared to Rhopalstylis sapida . This latter I also have growing here. They survived practically unscathed a freeze that killed some of my highland Euterpe edulis and killed also a mature Chamaedorea costaricana.

How fast, or how slow do Needle Palms grow?
by siege2050- 5 replies

I know they are slow, but just as an example, about how tall and wide, foliage included, would a 1.5 foot planted height Needle be in 5 years with good water, heat, and fertilizer. I am trying to get an idea where to plant some of the plants I have bought this year.
