Filifera vs filibusta street in Sicily Italy
by Axel Amsterdam- 6 replies

Hi, In the streetview link below you can perfectly see the differences between pure filifera and filibuster. The median of the street is lined with washingtonia's: First a filibusta followed by 4 pure filifera and then 3 filibusters again. If you switch back to the date of planting you can see the differences between these at an early age. https://www.google.nl/maps/@36.9025378,15.1426348,3a,75y,358.21h,91.07t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sDxBaCN75UM7U4EtJXDoJ1w!2e0!5s20081101T000000!6s%2F%2Fgeo2.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DDxBaCN75UM7U4EtJXDoJ1w%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26ya…

Here are some pics of my volunteers. They're under 3 older parents, on a south-facing wall of an unheated garage. Starting about 5 years ago, I've seen more each year. They were under leaf mulch, but for the past 3 years they've been exposed.

Trachy and Friends

Hi folks...been a while...Palms seem to be doing well in south facing situation in Springfield, Northern Virginia...this Mediterranean Fan gets a burlap corral and top...just gets a string of C-9 lights around the perimeter at ground level to let a little heat rise. Got it at a local garden center. They had it in a greenhouse...had 3 leaves covered in mites...a little in ground situation, some mite killer and it exploded...I think in ground since 2014...This Brazoria seems way too far north...it suffered the winter before last but last winter was an easy one...just gets a little burlap tent in the winter, no heat...Maybe I’ll add some C-9’s this winter...will enjoy it whi…

So. Much. Water.

I have several species of non- desert (Mediterranean, mostly) palms in the yard, along with several broadleaf trees - many of them eastern deciduous species. It has been 110+ on and off for over a month now with sub-10% humidity and no rain at all. I have been watering constantly. Chamaerops & P. dactylifera and canariensis almost every other day, Bismarckia and P. roebelenii every single day. Also have a Eucalyptus I been watering close to every day. This feels like overkill!! But I notice definitively they are doing better on this schedule during this period of heat than they were on a less frequent schedule. What are the weather benchmarks I shoul…

Best Soil PH Test
by ahosey01- 0 replies
I have thrown most of my palms directly into the native soil without bothering with a PH test. I believe most of the species I have aren't super fussy about soil PH, save perhaps for the Bismarckia. That said - I would like to understand my PH and get it to the optimal place for each of my palms if it's way off. I have Brahea armata, Bismarckia nobilis, Phoenix canariensis, Chamaerops humilis, Phoenix dactylifera, and will soon have Sabal uresana. Can anyone recommend the best soil PH test I can do myself without having to send it off to a lab?

Livistonia Chinensis wrinkles
by Keys6505- 1 reply
When I initially landscaped my yard I purchased 5 Livistonia Chinensis, one of which is about 15' tall and the other 4 were only about 2' tall to the top of the highest fan. Out of the 5, four have the typical flat-ish leaf of a Chinensis while the fifth seems to have a few wrinkles in all of the leaves. The wrinkles are present in new leaves and remains after they fully open up. Is this just a natural variation or a sign of some type of nutrient deficiency? It's kind of hard to see in the photos but it zig zags with the low points dead center opposite the petiole and on either side.

I was amazed last year when I looked behind one of my female Trachys and saw seedlings and small plants . I have plenty of Minors volunteering but wasn't expecting little Trachys . One picture below is of one Gardenia flower that is way late . My Gardenias stopped flowering weeks ago but this one flower finally opened . Below is my largest naturalized Trachy dug up last year . I'll plant it out maybe next year . Below that picture is the male , below that is the female , and below that are pictures of some other seedlings .

Does discovery cove in Orlando Florida have an ideal microclimate because you see large and healthy coconuts, dypsis lutescens, bottle palms etc. I thought Orlando dips down to 28-30 degrees ferenheit. Any one have knowledge of this?

Any of the hybrid gurus out there get any hybrids that grow with armament? I bought a plant from a very reputable hybridizer and it has grown with spines. It’s supposed to be Butia X Parajubea . Looks like Butia, but maybe a bit different, or maybe I just want to see a difference.

"Interesting" Nurseries in the Orlando Area?

I hope it's alright that I posted this topic in this section; I only chose this one because it seems a lot of folks in this section live in / around Orlando and similarly enjoy trying to grow palms suited for zones 10+ as I do despite being in 9b. Originally I'm from the Adirondacks in NY, but after 7 years in South Florida enjoying being able to grow just about anything I wanted to outside, I took a brief hiatus from FL to NH where my husband was finishing up his residency after wrapping his doctoral studies in clinical psych. I had to give up just about all my palms that weren't already in the ground to friends and family prior to the move, (I plan on stealing any …
