Hi everyone, My potted trachycarpus is pushing out new roots on its side. The roots are pushing the old petioles down towards the dirt. I was just wondering if I should cut the old petioles or will the roots eventually push through. Thanks!

I purchased this trachycarpus fortunei from Home Depot in late September for $30. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to re-pot (he is a overwinter in garage) He took no damage (I brought him inside for polar vortex) So I decided to put him outside for April? HUGE MISTAKE lol. Yesterday I left him outside even though I heard there would be very light snow, and I was in a rush to attend church. I came back to this;

Hi all, I have a few questions. I got a Chamaerops Humilis from HD last year in August in Georgia. Today I went out into the greenhouse and noticed the bright green flower. There are 3 blooms. Will it produce viable seed? Does it need a female or male to be pollinated? Can you tell gender? Anyways stay palmy!

First Palm planting of the year
by Chester B- 2 replies

I went to Gardenpalooza this weekend in Aurora, OR, and happened upon a couple nice 5 gallon Chamerops humilis cerifera that I couldn't pass up for the price. First one is planted out and both are just showing signs of flowering. The trachys in the background look terrible, but I got them for a deal at the end of last summer due to their condition. The winter and our east wind really yellowed them out but new growth is green and I've started hitting them with palm fertilizer so they should look decent my summer's end.

Trachycarpus Fortunei Success Rate in Mid-Atlantic?
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 21 replies

I’m thinking about trying Trachycarpus Fortunei again this year. I’ve tried 3 before. The first winter had a low of about 12° in which 1 spear pulled (but made a full recovery), 1 died, and 1 was fine. I mulched the bases and wrapped them all in burlap for that winter. The more damaged ones were planted out in the open and the one that was fine was planted in the open but next to an evergreen shrub on the Northwest side. The next spring/summer I added a Wagnerianus. The next winter was much harsher with a low of 5° and ice storms. I was preoccupied and pretty depressed during that period and didn’t have the motivation to protect any of them. They all croaked (I even had a…

We have a local Needle Palm population along the coast of Georgia, near Brunswick and Saint Mary’s, but I have yet to find them. The Family and I are on our way through the panhandle of Florida for vacation. Does anybody know of any native stands along Or off the interstate? We will be going back through South Georgia, too.

Planting Trachycarpus in CT

Hi Folks, I posted a little while back about a potted Trachy that I was concerned about. I moved it to a different room and it seems to be stabilizing. I'm preparing to plant it out in May and wanted to get some advice. I have seen or read that some people don't ammend soil, and some ammend with sand and/or compost. Some make a very large planting hole and some just make it large enough for the root ball. I even read a bit about installing a drainage grate next to it in order to provide water in winter. I have a reasonably sheltered SW corner of my house in 6B Wilton, Connecticut. One other question would be how far from the walls I should plant it…

Could I Plant These Now?
by PalmTreeDude- 16 replies

So I have these Sabal minor, and this weekend is going to be in the 70s and not get too cold, even at night. But over the week the highs are in the mid to high 50s and the lowest low is 30 (one night). Would I be rushing these or do you think they world be ok to be planted now? Would they be able to handle a frost freshly planted?

Rhapidophyllum hystrix in the wind

Hi everyone, I planted this large specimen needle in my yard a few days ago. I get a lot of wind where I live 20-30mph regularly with very few calm days and this spot is pretty exposed. I was just wondering how these guys do in the wind. Also I wanted to get in the ground ASAP so that it would establish better, hopefully not too early with 2 nights at 25f.

The current status of my palms up front right before the cold snap on thanksgiving. Chamaerops fully defoliated and pulled on 2 trunks but put out seed in April. Livistona fully defoliated as expected and the cerifera got sick on some potting soil but bounced back in the ground but is slow as molasses. Will be updating as fall and winter progress.

Been keeping an eye on this palm for the last year or so. It’s a Washingtonia For sure but not sure if it’s a hybrid or not. It certainly saw teens the winter or 17/18. It was damage some but roared right back. Curious what you guys thought. It’s been in the ground since just a little guy and they’re is another probably 50ft from it also doing well , looks identical . What do you Washingtonia experts think?

large Sabal Louisiana in habitat

I took this pic last month near Lake Pontchartrain west of New Orleans. Height is about 12 feet. Trunk is about 8' including crown. There are some I think even bigger in the vicinity but hard to get to in the swamp. There used to be one on Bayou Savauge NWR in New Orleans East that must have been about 14 feet tall but it was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. I wish I still had a picture of it.

Palms a year after cold snap in Nola
by ShadowNight030- 2 replies

I went down to New Orleans for the weekend, and while I was down I kinda looked around at palms since I haven’t really seen many of them since the winter of 2017/2018 when the city hit 18-20 degrees. The drive down I remember a queen being in New Roads, and earlier this year it had new growth, but I did not see it on my drive down. I didn’t see a queen in Baton Rouge, either. Now in Nola, queens and Pygmy dates looked fine. I did see 2 dead Pygmy dates, but compared to how many I saw alive and well is pretty good. Queens had full crowns, at least most did. I saw a few that looked like they were struggling or they were dead. In Kenner I saw 3 fruiting papaya trees. I didn’…

Cold night watering

So I planted my first sabal minor 5gal in the backyard yesterday knowing the next 2 night lows are in the mid-upper 20s. I am covering it with straw and a bucket during the night. Going forward the forecast looks mid 30s - 40s at night. My question is, should I wait to water it until the night temps are above freezing? I usually thoroughly water but I don't want to fry it. Thoughts are greatly appreciated. *The only reason I didn't wait to plant it was because I got it in the mail yesterday and it was severely growing out of the pot. *

So the palmetto you see isn't effected by any air from either unit, but I want to plant a palm right next to the palmetto up against the house and one next to the black hose. Yall think that's too close or will be an issue?

Needle After a Windy Winter

So we had a pretty windy Winter here, the Needle Palm is exposed to it and there were many days where it literally looked like it was going to rip out of the ground (of course it wouldn't, but it was blowing around A LOT). Here it is looking good! It's ready for the heat.

Here’s a young Bismarckia in zone 9a that came from especially cold-hardy parents. Couldn’t resist trying to grow a few of these marginal beauties.. In the background is a medium size Jubaea x Butia F1. They all vary a little. Anyone interested in partnering/purchasing on this 4.5 acre (buildable) palm nursery can PM me. Larger JxB F1s have begun flowering.

I know this subject has been hashed out a couple of times but there was a lot of uncertainty about how the xbutijubagrus can handle certain areas.I live in the Puget sound area Zone 8B. after this brutal winter we had this FeB I decided to check my areas coldest min temp this year in mukilteo wa which was only 20F and figured that the xbutijubagrus would be able to handle it here like a champion. any thoughts, input or experience with this hybrid would be welcomed.

Serenoa repens seed germination?
by Neil C- 2 replies
I'm having no luck germinating Serenoa repens seeds as they always seem to rot? A search on here revealed others having similar problems. I've got fresh ripe seeds (picked myself) and brought seeds online and then all seem to lack a hard outer shell? I can only describe them as what appears to be a soft oblong bean surrounded by the fruit. What am I missing, is there supposed to be a hard outer shell? I've tried these seeds in pots and baggies and when I go to check on them the inner bean part has just turned to liquid, please help me out. Regards Neil

I heard that Phoenix dactylifera is hardy to zone 8b, is this true? For example, in this picture of the S.C. USDA zones would it do fine in all of the highlighted zone 8b areas?
