How to revive palms with spear damage?

I have a JxB F1 and it didn't quite like this year's winter in College Station Texas despite some protection. Now, it did appear to sail through the exceptionally long-duration freezes (lower than 20 F for long hours) in January with very little overt cold damage. I was mightily impressed as I planted it in the ground as a 5 gallon not even a year ago in a windy spot (the diameter of base has grown a full inch since I put it in the ground). However, it has been raining ever since and I noticed last week that the spear and another new frond started to turn yellow (see pic). None of the older fronds appear damaged at all. So, I am in emergency mode. I can't quite pull…

Windmill palm question
by Rickybobby- 5 replies
If you look at the bottom left of the trunk closely you will see that area has had a bunch of fronds die off there. But barely any on the other ends. Question is has lighting and moisture kept this tree from growing taller? A lot of trees same age as mine the tree has reached higher and more even frond loss. I’m just wondering if I’m holding it back

Newly Planted Butia Pindo Palm
by Ninja88- 10 replies
- 1.9k views
I planted a 2 foot Pindo Palm 7 weeks ago but I haven't noticed any growth. The palm looks healthy with only the older fronds having brown tips. The Center frond is still green, i marked it besides a mature frond about a month ago but haven't seen a change. I have mulch around it and its been well watered but not overwatered. Is it just focusing on growing its roots out or should i be concerned?

Philly Windmill palm winter damage.
by Oldmagoo- 4 replies

My now 7 year old Trachy survived that brutal January freeze in zone 7b Philadelphia, pa area. But, mostly all frons are fried. It is pushing up new frons, so i know it's OK. I think my wrapping was insufficient this year. Any expertise on fertilizer, and any other care?

Some new palms!

Got some new additions! Essentially they will be part of my gardens "backbone" of hardy plants. Don't mind the dirt and lack of mulch, waiting on the soil to settle better before I do the final covering.

Sabal sp. 'Birmingham' in Knoxville, TN

Back in 2006, as part of the Southeast Palm Society Hometown Grant, I planted a couple of Sabal sp. 'Birmingham' palms in Knoxville on the UT campus. Thought I'd show the progression of one of them here, and how it is doing today. Planted on June 29, 2006 as about a five gallon palm: Here's a 2010 picture of the palm, starting to form a trunk: Fast-forward another four years to February of 2014, right after the Polar Vortex. This was after a low of -1F and a few other single digit lows, as well as several times where the temperature didn't rise above freezing for several days. As many of you know, cold damage doesn't show up sometimes fo…

Sabal Palmetto Seedling Alive!

So most of the Sabal palmetto seedlings that came up last Summer are alive with the tops burned. But some are still completely green. Only a few were lost. We had a crazy long period of below freezing here this winter. It is currently in the 70s. Here are some. I did absolutly nothing with these protection wise.

Butia Odorata vs Catarensis Cold hardiness
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 1 follower

I've mentioned the difference between the larger Odorata that is typically seen and grown in Texas, LA, and California vs the smaller Catarensis commonly found in Florida. Here are pictures of both large, mature species that are all less than 8' from each other that went through this winter at my house in which an ultimate low of 13.1 was recorded. The Catarensis are very well established having been there for a number of years while the Odorata is a newer planting just 16 months old and less healthy/established. Additionally the JxB F1 are north of the house and have zero damage whatsoever.

Sabal Louisiana thriving in Wichita

Hello, fellow palm nuts! Hope everyone has thawed nicely. I had the chance to stop by and check out my favorite palmy place around here a couple days ago, and was able to grab some pictures for everyone. During December's polar plunge, Wichita bottomed out around -2F at the airport. Closer to 0F downtown, however, we were below freezing for at least 48 hours. These Sabals have taken this in stride. One of these was planted by a good friend of mine many years ago, the rest have volunteered. A true testament to the hardiness of Sabal Louisiana and the Sabal genus as a whole. Enjoy!

It Is... Dead!

So my Washingtonia robusta appears to be dead now... Two of the three spears pulled. I pulled them out and sprayed the inside with hudrgren peroxide and it fizzled like crazy! The only reason I am not taking this little probably dead palm out is because there is once spear that did not pull. Do Washingtonias ever regenerate spears like Windmill Palms? Either way, this palm was an experiment. It was protected on the coldest days.

fastest-growing trunk
by Sandy Loam- 10 replies

Can anyone tell me which of the cold-hardy palms has the fastest-growing trunk (in a humid subtropical climate)? By "cold-hardy," I mean at least as hardy as a Sygraus Romanzoffiana. Please don't say Washingtonia Robusta. I can't grow those in my region because some fungus or disease is attacking them. Thank you
