Any chance of survival for my Trachycarpus Fortunei?
by Estlander- 8 replies
- 1.1k views
Planted this Trachy in January this year. Otherwise looks good, but lately the spears have heen turning brown. The growing point smells very musty as well. No spear pulls yet. They’re still tightly in there. I hand water it (no sprinklers) and never get the growing point wet with tap water. About a month ago, when i first saw dried out spots on an emerging spear, I sprayed it with copper fungicide, but looking at it yesterday it has gotten worse with two newest emerging spears looking pretty bad. I soaked the growing point with copper fungicide yesterday. Considering that this is FL zone 9A with plenty of rain, heat and humid weather still left until…

Trachycarpus seed heat damage
by Rickybobby- 8 replies
Hey everyone. I’ve been trying to germinate 4 species of trachycarpus. I’ve heard and read of so many different styles to germinate. I choose baggie method and I was told bottom heat is ok. But a lot of people have said to use room temperature. So far out of 150 seeds I’ve had 5 germinate. My question really is. Did putting the seeds on a heat mat that was 90 degrees kill or damage the seeds? I mean it does get hot in areas they naturalize ? Or will they still have a chance being back at cooler temps? Side note my fortuneis were fresh fresh and the others not so sure

Large Butia PNW
by Chester B- 3 replies

Thought I would share some pics of my large Butia that I've had in the ground for a couple of years now in the Portland, OR area. This tree was planted out as 24" box 2 years ago (Aug 1) along with one other specimen. That first winter of 2015/2016 was in the top 5 worst of all time with the other four occurring back in the 40's and 50's. Multiple freezing rain events, almost a week below freezing and the lowest temp I saw was 12 F one night. Aside from that we had record rainfall that year that absolutely saturated everything and caused a lot of landslides and flooding in our area. This tree took it all like a champ while the other one succumbed, the only thing i h…

Palms for southern coast of Korea?
by Neolitsea- 4 replies

Hello there, I am a new member from South Korea. Although I currently live in northern part of South Korea where it is impossible to grow palms outdoor without protection, my father have a parcel of land in Boseong, in the southern coast of the Korean peninsula, and he have allowed me to plant things there. I want to plant some palms in my father's plot, preferably something more exotic than common Trachycarpus fortunei, and am currently raising some seedlings of Butia odorata, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Serenoa repens, Sabal minor, and Sabal palmetto to plant there. However, I am unsure if they would be capable of overwintering reliably without protection there,…

The wife & I were out Saturday & decided to stop by the HL Hunley museum. Found this photo on the wall. During the war they built the forts with palmetto logs & pretty much wiped out the palmetto's here in Charleston.

I have a Sabal minor that is too small to plant yet and was planning on planting it next year. I am wanting to leave it inside for this winter (leaving it outside on the coldest nights while in a small pot would kill it) but am wondering if that will effect the cold tolerance of it fo the next winter after this one since it would not be experiencing any true cold. Do you think it will be fine if I leave it inside this winter?

Best Method for Winter Protection?
by ChrisA- 21 replies

As summer nears its end, I can’t help but think of the cold weather that is coming. Miraculously, in this high desert, I’ve been able to get a filibusta established to the point that not only can I not protect it so well, but, outside of a freakishly bitter winter, it really does not need the protection. However, I have two young palms, one newly planted this year, which are not robust and established. These need my best efforts for several more years until they are possibly large enough to balk at our average winter. These are a Sabal uresana, planted in 2016, and a new Brahea armata, just planted in May of this year. The sabal received zero damage, under …

Parajubaea in the central valley
by neil- 2 replies

Parajubaea torrallyii is proving to be very cold hardy and heat tolerant in our hot , brutal central valley summers outside of Sacramento. Has been down to 18 degrees some years back and my parajubaea suffered minimal damage.looks great in the summer despite 100 plus temps for a good part of the summer. Will post some pics tomorrow. Parajubaea in my yard has a little over 6 feet of trunk. If anyone is interested I also have some well grown 15 gallon parajubaea for 60.00 dollars. Cheers Neil. Greatvalleypalms@comcast.net

Hole in healthy Palmetto
by Jdical- 8 replies

Hi All. I had bird put a nice hole in my sabal a couple of years ago about the size of a tennis ball. I filled it with spray foam and then a rubber specticide. I went to check on it to find that the cavity has doubled inside, does not smell rotted, looks like it is composting with a black sludge. The tree is very healthy with nice crown even after the cold winter here in obx, NC. I need to know what to spray inside and what to fill it with if anything?? Suggestions would be awesome. See pics.

It is still green but the leaflets are still folded and it the palm looks ragged, the tallest spear looks like it's opening but I'm not sure if wind caused it to split/open,it was dug up last August 1st 2017 with 20% roots left out of a 100%,I couldn't get much roots as was in the ground solid, can anyone tell me what's going on with this palm?I got hydrogen peroxide 6% just incase but when should I use it?would mycorrhizal fungi help the roots?when will the palm produce more spears?

Moving Palms
by willials- 14 replies

I am in a bit of a bind and need some advice. I received a homeowner's association letter today that said my palms are out of compliance with my neighborhood's landscaping. I have had these palms in the ground for 5+ years and they are making me remove them, saying that a neighbor complained and that I did not have them approved through their formal process when planted. Well, the HOA was bankrupt in 2012 when I moved in and we were the third people in the entire neighborhood of (now 2000+) homes to move in. I am going to try and fight this, but if I don't win, I'm going to be forced to dig up and move some pretty sizable and mature palms. It's sickening honestly, but it …

Phoenix canariensis seems to be dying!
by Donatasgem- 3 replies
- 3.4k views
Hi all, I recently bought a Phoenix canariensis (Canary Date palm) from a local store (B&Q in the UK). It was reduced in price as some of the leafs were already dead. Anyway, I chopped off the dead leaves and left the green ones on, then planted it outside in a warm, sheltered spot (we have had a hot summer here in the UK this year) but it does not seem to be doing anything at the moment, I am not even sure whether it is still alive or not. I did read somewhere that sometimes the plant can be dead but the leafs still remain green for a while. I do water it every day now, it is in a good draining soil too. See the picture on what you guys think! …

hi everyone, I've been looking into palmtalk for several years now and l learnt a lot in these pages, so it's time to post some pics of my garden. I have an extended collection of cold hardy palms (hybrids, sabals, braheas etc), my garden is in zone 8b, with warm and dry summers, winters are cool and rainy. There is a lot of wind all year long. And I'm also infested with paysandisia archon unfortunately. My biggest mule (butia x syagrus santa catarina) sabal sp tifton Sabal sp with brahea decumbens Butia odorata also with brahea decumbens Brahea armata and a very fast and hardy syagrus from southern Brazil (parana) …

In memory of...

One of my favorite butia in town. The slim trunk and open crown really made it look tropical imho. Sadly, it had not pushed out a spear by the end of july, and was removed. Another victim of the harsh winter event.

I am asking for a German fried who is not a member here. Before too many words, a few photos: This Sabal was planted in 2007 and grew very well until three years ago. Leaves started becoming continuously smaller since then and this year, it started to push out a flower stalk from the centre - it almost looks like a mini-corypha's terminal spike. It is protected every winter and never sees temperatures below -8C (17.6F). Has anybody ever seen anything like this? Any chance of survival/recovery? After all, it is still alive and growing... Any suggestions as to how to facilitate its recovery? thanks!

Sabal minor 'Spock'

I came upon an unusual group of Sabal minor today in Southern Georgia (USA). There were several palms close together that looked all alike. Every leaf was split very deeply right down the middle so that it almost looked like 2 leaves. The inner leaf segments are fused together pretty good, but the outer leaf segments are cut almost down to the hastula and floppy. Other Sabal minor nearby looked normal. These palms of course had no seeds. I hope Trekkies will appreciate my name for this palm, lol! These pictures were taken with my phone camera, which has a corrupted SD card and most of the time will not save the pictures correctly, if at all. I ha…

Cold Damaged Sabal - Any Help?
by Jdical- 1 reply
- 1.2k views
Hi all this is my first post and I am in the Kill Devil Hills Area of OBX, NC. I have a few Sabal palms on my property and I recently planted 2 new 18 ft's last summer that rooted really well however I did not wrap them given the previous mild summer. So, of course, we had a terrible winter and all of my Sabals got some cold damage. Of the 2 I planted last year one is doing pretty good and has some really good growth and tight spears shooting through. The other has developed a soft trunk to about an inch in certain spots but is growing a nice spear but just incredibly slowly. I did dig around the palm and noticed that that around 18 inches it had solid roots that were ali…
