Phoenix ID - Rupicola?

After a little walk around my neighborhood to spot something interesting, found this Phoenix of some kind that looks a lot like P. Rupicola. If it is Rupicola, then it’s pretty amazing to see one on the panhandle. I suppose it could also be a Rupicola hybrid, or just a plain but interesting looking P. Canariensis. What say you?!!!!!!

On a few of my pinnate palms this year I have noticed that when the spear is pushing that the individual leaflets aren't opening/unfolding creating a droopy looking frond that is rather flaccid looking as it pushes out. I have seen this on a butia, mule and queen. Any thoughts on the cause?

Portland suburbs neighborhood tour

Here’s a few pics I tried to take discreetly while walking my dogs at lunch. Our HOA was built in 1993 and is composed of over 100 homes. We’re located in the southeastern suburbs. Most of the palms were planted at a later date. As you can see not much variety but some nice specimens nonetheless. 99% of palms you see in the Portland area are Trachycarpus.

How much sun do these need to grow fast and flower? I like mine to grow compact (I hate stretched look),mine gets from 9am to 1pm of sun then to 3pm sun only on leaves,is that enough? or should I move for full afternoon sun? P.s. it's in a pot

Nice Surprise

Ok so this is probably nothing to write home about but it got me a little fired up so I thought I'd share. So over the winter we'd pull handfuls of trachy hair off one of the trees to use to start our fires. It's crazy flammable. Anyways I was cleaning up around the yard today and noticed a yellow spot on the trunk of said tree. I took a closer look and noticed it was an old boot. So I cleaned some more and got some more yellow, and some more, and some more. I dunno if this is a typical coloration of old trachy boots but im hoping it stays.

Sabal Palmettos vs. Mexicana Hardiness
by romeyjdogg- 10 replies

Hey all, Just picked out a few Sabal Palmettos (~8 foot trunks) along with a Butia x Jubaea hybrid for our yard and I got to wondering, would Texas Sabals (Mexicana) be a safer bet over the Palmettos for unprotected winter survival? The Palmettos we picked out were trucked in from Florida, so I assume they lived their lives in a much warmer zone than me (8a - Fort Worth). I'm also somewhat concerned because we live in a new development and don't have any protection from the north winds. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hey all. It's been a while since I've posted on here, and my Trachycarpus is flowering for the first time this year. I am not certain if it is male or female, but I am thinking it is male. Is anyone able to confirm? I've attached a few photos. Thank you!

I had heard a couple of years ago about Spanish moss growing out in the blackwater cypress creek in Wendell NC, only 10 miles from Raleigh. Originally I had assumed it was carried there by birds as the actual range of Spanish moss starts somewhere along the Neuse River in between Smithfield and Goldsboro, and birds are known to carry it inland. I finally got the chance to kayak out there and I found it, clumps of it. I only managed to grab 1 picture, there were smaller clumps in lower branches of the cypress trees as well! Some still green! It could only mean they reproduced rather than bird drop off! Thoughts? We really need updated maps on plant/animal ranges. …

PNW Palm Sightings

Recently I was driving towards Lincoln City, Oregon and along my way I noticed the Siri and Sons nursery. Driving by a house on that property, I noticed some interesting palms growing. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures because we zoomed past it to fast, so google maps it is! Take a look at the screenshots and let me know what you think. I believe the first photo shows a couple date palms and the second one shows several Washingtonias! Knowing our climate (8b), its constantly wet and cool here which is the perfect combination for inhibiting Washigtonia growth. Yet somehow when I drove by, all of the palms in the google map street view are still there and growing! …

Butia archeri x Syagrus romanzoffiana

Hello, I acquired the above-mentioned hybrid about a month ago. Maybe I am blind, but I couldn't find any thread about it on palmtalk? I am eager to learn about its cold hardiness, eventual size and everything else. I admit, there is not much to look at + it had sunburn: But nevertheless, it seems a bit tougher than my queen palms which are just a little bigger. They even got burned at about -2 or -3°C and heavy frost, whereas this had nothing. Show me yours, please.

Fort Worth TX - 8a Backyard

Hey all, Just moved from Houston into a new place on the SW side of Fort Worth, TX (zone 8a). I see a few members live over in Dallas, so I'm hopeful that I'll get some really good advice from you folks. My backyard is fairly large, full sun (new construction, so no tree canopy cover), and I'm looking to plant some palms that will require little in terms of winter babysitting/protection. I would appreciate any advice on the following list of potential options. I'm also open to others I may have missed: Chamaerops humilis Washingtonia Filifera Sabal Mexicana Sabal Palmetto Brahea Armata Jubaea Chilensis (Heat + humidity may …

What coconut varieties would be the best candidates for southern California?
by coconuts_dont_growhere_but- 32 replies

Apparently it turns out that certain coconut palm varieties are hardier than others. I live in Murrieta, CA, where I believe it could grow in a good microclimate (as demonstrated by the one in Corona, CA, where the climate and weather is almost identical and perhaps even colder than where i live, and yet seems happy.) In winter, the high temp is around 65 to 72, with a low of 39 to 43. There are some days out of the year where the high is 55 to 60, but the nights are 45 or above. There would be a few nights where the temp if briefly 30 degrees, but it quickly rebounds. Once every few years, you could get a low of 28 or 29, but anything lower would be once every decade or …

Beautiful Wild Sabals

The loggers are gracious enough to not mow these things down when they clear cut. There is about a 10 mile stretch of clear cut along side the road I take to work everyday. These have to be upwards of 80’ tall. And, there are literally hundred of them alone with thousands of smaller ones. They’re in my native range, so I see a lot of these in the woods. But, none this tall.

Chinese Fan Palm

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Chinese Fan Palm. I see them planted in groups a lot down here, and they never seem to have that grand, majestic look to them. I drive by this one Chinese Fan Palm at least three times a week, though. And it looks amazing. It’s fronds are at least 8-11 foot long. It’s grown fairly fast. And, it was grown under the canopy of a few large live oaks. Anyway, I wish I had a better picture of it. I tried to take a picture while in the car, stopped in the middle if the road. A car was coming, and this was the best I could get. I’m also posting a link to its location on google maps. This was about 4-6 years ago I believe. …

Hard to find locally my first Brahea armata. Not exactly the best climate for them but there is one in Seattle and one in Salem, Or that are surviving. I’m told it’s hard to build up the number of fronds as soon as one is produced another dies. I’m going to try in a hot spot with ample water and palmgain.
