Anybody have any first hand experience with one of these regarding hardiness? I have one coming from MPOM along with the silver queen and don't have much knowledge of them. If I was gonna take a stab at it I'd guess 20F or maaaaaybe high teens but wanted to get feedback from you guys. Thanks as always!

Palm leaves growing point. How to explain?
by smatofu- 3 replies
Hi, Based on the article below from the University of Florida, [Palm stems are characterized by having a single apical meristem or growing point, which is also referred to as the bud or heart. All new leaves and flowers develop from the apical meristem ... ... ... Death of the apical meristem in a palm results in the death of that stem in clustering species and death of the entire palm in single-stem species. It also means that stem wounds, which would eventually be compartmentalized and grown over in dicot trees, are permanent in palms.] It makes sense, but we see many examples of leaves growing from cut trunks. How to explain it? Can a cut palm crea…

Trachy or Needle?
by GregVirginia7- 8 replies

Just arrived...is this a Trachy or a Needle? The leaf says it’s a Needle but maybe immature Trachy’s have leaf segments with 3 folds as opposed to one down the middle of the segment? There are also no needles on the trunk...just wondering since it’s supposed to be a Trachy but the leaf segments are not like my more mature Trachy...any help greatly appreciated...

How long before cold hardy palms start growing post storm? 1 2 3

So we have some larger 15G+ Windmills, Texas Sabals, and Mexican Fan Palms around our pool area and they all have a varying degree of green post the storm. The Windmills have nice green tight spears, and the sabal is actively pushing a tiny spear from its center. They all got copper now twice since the thaw happened (mild copper) just in the event we had some fungi issues. In general, with the weather looking nice how quickly should we start seeing visible growth? I marked the new spears so I can track progress but nothing noticeable quite yet. Located in the DFW area.

My doubt is because of the pinnate leaves, which it does not have, but it may be young. Can you decide if it really is Butia x Syagrus?

Sabal seedling repot w/ pics
by Dartolution- 2 replies

Back in August of 2019 while on vacation I collected a few sabal seedlings that had washed ashore one night after a storm had passed in Panama City Beach Florida. I have a thread on "Seeds from the Beach" that you can check out the history if anyone cares. Today I decided it was time to repot one of the seedlings and while doing so was careful not to damage the roots. I was able to snap a few pictures and thought I would share. This is still an unidentified (likely palmetto from what I was told) sabal seedling. It has been in its original pot since August 2019.

The butia in the first two pics has almost no trunk and longer almost like ribbon like fronds. Purchased at York Palms in New Braunfels. while the last two pics the smaller palms seems to have more trunk with stiffer fronds. Purchased at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Hey guys, While at a nursery here today I came across a 3 gallon Butia and picked it up. The fronds seem to spiral clockwise which is weird, and twist a little. It also appears blue/glaucous to me. Thoughts? Is this odorata? It was labeled capitata but we all know about that.

Chamaerops Humilis Growth 1 2

Just wanted to share this to see what you guys think. Back in April of this year, I decided to transform my overgrown backyard that the previous owners of my townhome had planted as a very town and country/english garden theme. In early April I cleared the entire yard down to the ground by hand, down to the soil. I decided on a design, implemented it, and created the first slightly raised planting bed with flagstone. I used a combination of native soil, which is basically red clay, mixed with generous amounts of organic matter, sand, and bark. When I planted my oldest Chamaerops I had been growing it in a pot for about 2 years. It was pla…

Trunk cut?

I have 2 washies that are about 5 years old...was told they were filifera but may be a filibusta. We live in the DFW area and they took a pretty bad hit in the freeze in February. After the weather passed, the leaves were quite bleached (not crispy brown) due to the snow but nothing on the tree was collapsed which we took as a positive sign. Other than the frond color they looked completely normal. As the lower fronds drooped and no green spots were remaining, we would cut them. I periodically give them a tug to see if there is spear pull and they have been firm until 3 days ago. The spear came out but the end was still bright white and fleshy and no odor was noted. I pu…

So, I took a ride around today and snapped a few photos of palms in New Braunfels, TX. All shots are in the city limits of New Braunfels, which is on the NE side of San Antonio. Generally speaking the lows are a degree or two lower than SA, but the highs are a degree or two higher than SA, for whatever reason. It is warmer in New Braunfels than northern Bexar County along and north of Loop 1604. Photos coming...

Sabal Palmetto “Lisa” Vs Sabal Palmetto
by Collectorpalms- 1 follower

Since Sabal "Lisa" Is a mutation of Sabal Palmetto, are the cultural requirements the same in regards to growth, nutrients, and cold hardiness; or, because it is a mutation, is it possibly slower and less cold hardy etc... I am in the process ( I hope) of attaining what appear to be the real thing. Obviously I am hoping they are not too finicky and will someday have some nice size to them. I am hoping they would have the same cold tolerance for central Texas.

I have a Phoenix Theophrasti houseplant that looks great all winter indoors, but in spring when put outside it turns brownish and the leaves get small black spots. I don't have it out during freezes. Any reason for this? I ground planted 2 days ago. I'm hoping it has to do with the fact that it was potted, and it can be better drenched in real ground. Every spring I have to cut lower fronds off, as they are speckled with black spots. The room it was in is warm will full sun all winter. The plan is to protect with thermocubes and xmas lights like my trachy. In the sun, my wraps can be 50 to 70 on a bright day. The fig bed will also be stuffed with cus…

I won't be updating pictures of this Washy every three weeks but I did want to show its growth for the last 3 weeks . The first picture is on 3/11 and the next 2 pictures were taken today on 3/31 . I'd say it's off to a good start , and with a few more fronds it should look respectable . I'm glad to see growth in some of those areas in Texas that got so cold . Thanks for looking . Identifying pods or flowers emerging from trunk
by Brandon James- 1 follower

Hey everyone, I have found some new pods emerging from the trunk near the crown, curious if I should let them grow if the are seeds or not bother and if they are flowers let them be? I wasn’t sure what one was and picked at it, and it was a cream colored pod, so I left it alone and today discovered a second one that’s much bigger under another frond. It appears to have some cold damage at the beginning of the tip. I also thought I found some mold on the other side so I treated with a light amount of neem oil mixed with a gallon of water and poured over the tree.

HC Palmetto after 5-6 months of growth :
by WSimpson- 2 followers

I planted this HC Palmetto on June 2 , 2020 so it probably grew about 5-6 months before cooler weather slowed it down . It was already rooting out well and had lots of frond growth when I bought it . Just got it home : It was incredibly heavy with all that rootball . I think it had been at the nursery for at least a couple of years because of all that root growth and it even flowered last summer . It was said to be from northern Florida stock , so hopefully it's a little hardier than those from more southern ecotypes . I bought it in Wilmington , NC . Here it is today , and this will be its start of the 2021 season picture for my fu…

Hey Gang :), I have Windmill Palm seeds that have sprouted, and are doing good. Half of them haven't , and 5 of them have already starting to rot. Despite my efforts I think it might be time to throw the seeds out in the compost :(, The photos are the seeds that haven't even begun to germinate and the other one obviously have :P, They ones that haven't germinated still are hard as rocks and sink like stones when put in water...are they dead or what? I started them around mid January.. Thanks a lot

So I have some sabal seeds germinating and a few of the windmill palm seeds have germinated also I just noticed. I don’t have a greenhouse or plant lights. What should I do with them at this stage? should I plant them up into small pots and put them outside to grow? lows are in the 50’s and 60’s for the remainder of the forcast( next two nights will be in 40’s) thanks for any input. This is my first time ever growing anything from seed.

Should I move my palm tree to another spot?

I didn't really plan ahead and planted a windmill palm under a power line a few years ago. It is about a foot or 2 to the left of it. The top power line is about 15 ft high maybe and the line under it about 12 ft high. According the web it says it normally grows to only about 8-10ft in the cooler growing zones 6 and 7. I am in Tennessee, and some sites list my area as zone 6b, other sites say I am in zone 7a. Most of our winters are above zero. But it's absolute max height is like 30 or 40ft if it is in really ideal conditions. It says it commonly reaches 10-20ft in landscape uses, however. It is in I would say partial or full shade. I know it's probably really unlik…
