pheonix Transplanting a Volunteer

So about 7 years ago I was just walking around the house enjoying some dates I got from Abu Dhabi, UAE. Probably al khalas dates, but I am not sure because I got a few kinds. Anyhow this bad boy popped up and I never actually gave it any attention, as I never expected a date palm from such a very hot desert country to grow and make it here. Its right next to the garage door and it keeps scratching the cars, so its tied up now until the spring or early summer when I transplant it. Its growing on the west side of the house, so only gets sun in the afternoon.

Disposable (?) Palm

Years ago, I was at somebody's house in Mobile who had outside their dining room window a fan palm that functioned well as a privacy screen from neighbors when we sat at the table for dinner and conversation. It filled the window from top to bottom, so it must have been about 12 ft tall and close enough to the house that the fronds brushed gently against the screen. I liked the visual effect and the way it allowed balmy breezes into the room. I assume that, eventually, the palm got too big for its spot up against the house so that's why I called this thread "disposable." But maybe it doesn't have to be... Can you recommend a palm that's adapted to 8b Gulf Coast condi…

Sabal minor Seed Question
by PalmTreeDude- 7 replies
- 1.4k views
Since I'm at the beach, there are a ton of Sabal minor around and they are absolutely loaded with unripe seed. If I were to take off one of the stalks from the base, do you think the seed would ripen all of the way, or is it too early to be doing that?

Oregon grown Butia eriospatha
by Chester B- 11 replies

I thought I'd start a progress thread on the second Butia in my garden. This time I purchased a Butia eriospatha that was grown from seed here in Oregon. I picked the bluest one out of a few dozen specimens and planted it on August 12, 2019. It is much bluer in appearence than my Butia odorata so I hope it retains this color. 6 weeks later and this palm has surprised me. It's put out two fronds so far - I guess it was desperate to get out of the pot.

Northerly Palms

Living in the UK, it amazes me how much influence the jet stream has on our climate. It's relatively mild all year round - no real hot summers or freezing cold winters. Parts of the south west hardly see any frost, so quite tropical plants can thrive (as long as they don't need serious heat) Here's some palms I've spotted on my travels CIDP @ 50 degrees north in Cornwall Butia @ 50 degrees north in Cornwall CIDP @ 53 degrees north in Wales

Droopy Trachy Fronds
by Rightstuff15- 8 replies

I have three Trachycarpus fortunei windmills. The one in the picture has fronds that are not as stiff or thick as my other two. I bought it from Fast Growing Trees a few years ago. It puts out new fronds each year and seems very healthy. Just wondering if anyone would know what variety this may be or why the fronds are thin and droopy?

Differences? They're about eight feet apart, four inch caliper... First picture will show the two, nitida being more spread out and Decora seems more compact. - Ray.

Have I doomed my trachies?
by DAVEinMB- 25 replies

First time posting so first off - hello everyone, I'm a big fan of the forum. Ok so here's my situation... I've just recently gotten into palm trees and have been trying to give myself a crash course on the do's and don'ts and just bulking up on knowledge in general. However some knowledge is gained through making mistakes as we all know. I got a screaming deal on some mature trachycarpus fortunei palms back in December of 18. I picked up 5 of them for $625 but had to dig up and move them myself. The weekend before Christmas they were out of the ground and replanted at my place. Relocating them was by no means fun but they all seemed to take. They pushed out …

Clackamas Palms
by Chester B- 10 replies
We have a lot of Trachycarpus palms planted around here but you don't often see much else. To my surprise I was driving on the backside of the Clackamas Town Center and across the street an office building has a few palmy surprises. There were many triple plantings of Trachycarpus with seedlings all around their bases, plus a pretty huge Chamaerops cluster. The Sabals were a grouping of three as well and had seed stalks from last year full of seed. Do you think its still viable? I grabbed a couple and crushed them between my fingers and the outer husk fell away but inside were small hard seeds.

Advice for Mule Planting Location
by DAVEinMB- 2 followers

Good morning everyone. I just picked up a couple of 65 gallon mule palms and wanted to get some opinions on planting location. I know there are a ton of factors that go into how cold tolerant these plants are and I have no knowledge of their specific genetics. As the crow flies I'm about 5 miles off the coast in the myrtle beach area, zone 8b. My plan was to plant them in an open area of my front yard that receives sun all day long, including early morning sun. I could put them in a more protected area which may provide a better microclimate but I'd rather keep them out in the open. As a side note these palms spent over a year in containers on the nursery's lot howe…
