Bought a bunch of palms from FB earlier this month. One was a 4" pot of Beccariophoenix alfredii. The plan was to repackage it right away and ship it off to my daughter living just outside of Baton Rouge, La. The day the palms arrived from the Big Island I brought the little guy into the house and packed it up the next morning along w/a few zip bags of black cinder. Took it to UPS that morning. When it arrived in Baton Rouge it only contained the black cinder and a not from USDA that the plant was removed because of White Flys and something else I can't remember. BULL CRAP. There were no white flies on it or any of the other 16 palms. FB is certified to ship so I …

Hard and Fast, or Low and Slow?
by Funkthulhu- 5 replies

Just an odd thought I had about Palm Heartiness. We're all zone-pushers, whether in ground or in container ranch. So when the weather gets cold do you worry more about the lowest temp, or the duration? I see the Floridians trying to cover small palms, etc. when the arctic express heads too far south, but those events are usually one overnight low and maybe some lingering coolness. What happens when the temps are slightly above your danger point but stay there for a long time? Maybe no freeze damage, but is there a metabolic effect on the plants? Example, we've had a really early cold weather event on the Great Plains. I have stuff still outside (because …

I found this specimen growing next to a creek in the maritime forest at Emerald Isle woods park in Emerald Isle, NC. I am not the best at identifying palms, so I am coming here for help. At first glance, I assumed it was a minor since it was in the middle of the forest, and s. minor is native to the island, but s. palmetto is not. The location it is in is not close to any Florida transplants (which naturalize readily on the island), so I figured it couldn't be that. But, as you can see in the picture, the fronds are costapalmate, which is a trait of palmetto not minor, right? Perhaps a bird or other animal transported seeds from a Florida transplant palmetto to this spot …

I had 12 palm trees planted in my yard about 3 weeks ago. Within days 4 of the palm tree fronds started turning brown as well as the center bulb in two of them. The remaining 8 had some mild browning of the lower fronds as well. Need help on what to do next. I have gone around each bulb and pocked around with garden hoes and there was no obvious air pocket. I am watering them constantly using a drip system and every night creating a puddle of water using garden hoes. The fronds turned brown so fast that it was hard to believe.

What's wrong with my trachy? 1 2
by NCFM- 43 replies

I planted this trachy back in May, and it was doing great until about a week ago. The individual blades on several of the fronds have now closed up, and the emerging spears have some brown/discoloration. The palm is planted in full sun, and it is the dog days of summer, so maybe this is heat stress? You can see here how the blades are closed/shut: Here is what it looked like when I first planted it:

Insect Damage?

Is this something I should be concerned about? I've noticed some brown buildup on some of the fronds of my washy - almost looks like mud or dirt. In addition to that a number of the fronds are eaten through and or bent in half. Is it worth giving it an insecticide / fungicide bath or is this fairly normal?

Jubaea chilensis and possibly Jubaea chilensis x Butia F1

Not a palm I've seen advertised for sale much here in South Australia, so when I came across these 5 young Jubaea chilensis on Gumtree I jumped at the opportunity. The private seller grew them from seed and claimed they were around 5 years old. In need of a re-pot, but very healthy. $100 AUD (£55 GBP/€61 EURO/$73 USD) for the lot!!! I believe some of them are hybrids (JxB F1) as does Nigel Kembrey. What do you think?

Cincinnati Palms part 6

I Know its been a while but I have some updates on palms in the Ohio river valley. I recently met a guy in Louisville, Ky who planted some needle palms and sabal louisiana in 2014. They have been growing against the foundation of his house completely UNPROTECTED despite EVERY garden center telling him that it couldn't be done. In fact the sabal louisianas are actually beginning to from trunks and volunteer seedlings are sprouting up through out his yard! He allowed me to come down to his house and dig up a bunch of seedlings that are over a year old and made it through last winter unscathed. The first pic is me standing among his palms. The second pic is the volunteer see…

Trachy Leaves Folding
by GregVirginia7- 0 replies

Do Trachy leaves fold to help moderate the environment? I’ve noticed, especially in the winter, the colder it gets, the tighter they close...I know it can be a sign of stress but my Trachy seems to be healthy...it’s leaves have always looked semi-folded...some days more than others...today is dry, sunny and low 80’s...even the Mediterranean Fan tends to be folded, though to a lesser degree...the Needles are wide open and flat...any lesson would be appreciated...

Filifera vs filibusta street in Sicily Italy

Hi, In the streetview link below you can perfectly see the differences between pure filifera and filibuster. The median of the street is lined with washingtonia's: First a filibusta followed by 4 pure filifera and then 3 filibusters again. If you switch back to the date of planting you can see the differences between these at an early age. https://www.google.nl/maps/@36.9025378,15.1426348,3a,75y,358.21h,91.07t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sDxBaCN75UM7U4EtJXDoJ1w!2e0!5s20081101T000000!6s%2F%2Fgeo2.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DDxBaCN75UM7U4EtJXDoJ1w%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26ya…

Trachy and Friends

Hi folks...been a while...Palms seem to be doing well in south facing situation in Springfield, Northern Virginia...this Mediterranean Fan gets a burlap corral and top...just gets a string of C-9 lights around the perimeter at ground level to let a little heat rise. Got it at a local garden center. They had it in a greenhouse...had 3 leaves covered in mites...a little in ground situation, some mite killer and it exploded...I think in ground since 2014...This Brazoria seems way too far north...it suffered the winter before last but last winter was an easy one...just gets a little burlap tent in the winter, no heat...Maybe I’ll add some C-9’s this winter...will enjoy it whi…

So. Much. Water.

I have several species of non- desert (Mediterranean, mostly) palms in the yard, along with several broadleaf trees - many of them eastern deciduous species. It has been 110+ on and off for over a month now with sub-10% humidity and no rain at all. I have been watering constantly. Chamaerops & P. dactylifera and canariensis almost every other day, Bismarckia and P. roebelenii every single day. Also have a Eucalyptus I been watering close to every day. This feels like overkill!! But I notice definitively they are doing better on this schedule during this period of heat than they were on a less frequent schedule. What are the weather benchmarks I shoul…

Best Soil PH Test
by ahosey01- 0 replies
I have thrown most of my palms directly into the native soil without bothering with a PH test. I believe most of the species I have aren't super fussy about soil PH, save perhaps for the Bismarckia. That said - I would like to understand my PH and get it to the optimal place for each of my palms if it's way off. I have Brahea armata, Bismarckia nobilis, Phoenix canariensis, Chamaerops humilis, Phoenix dactylifera, and will soon have Sabal uresana. Can anyone recommend the best soil PH test I can do myself without having to send it off to a lab?

PALMS R KOOL on youtube has bismarckia nobilis, livistona chinensis and decora, CIDP, washingtonia robusta and filifera, butia odorata, sabal palmetto, trachycarpus fortunei, and more growing in his yard outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. The only form of winter protection he has used so far are small heat lamps. Here's a link to his latest yard update:
