Anyone harvest and or germinate fresh parajubaea seeds? Normally, seeds that fall from palms that are green are immature and not viable. However are parajubaea seeds viable when they are large and green, OR only once they turn brown? I am Looking at a buying a few “fresh” seeds out of California, and the green thing bothered me. thanks, Ryan

Silver Repens

I had a business trip to Palm City, Florida this week. Most of the time my business trips are in the north, so this was an excellent opportunity to look at some palms and tropicals. I decided to drive down from my house because it was only a 5 hour drive, and I wanted to stop and look at some nurseries on the way back. I noticed a lot of silver repens while I was down there. 50% of the palmettos were green, and the other 50% were silvers. On the way back home, I noticed more greens and the less silvers. Once I got to Daytona, it was about 80% green and 20% silver ratio along I-95 My question is, is the silver a totally separate species than the …

Spring Plantings 1 2

So 18 months after I moved in, I am finally getting around to putting some more of my potted palm collection in the ground. I have a large L-shaped bed that goes around two sides of my garage. So here's what I've got so far (mulch to come tomorrow) The North side has four azaleas alternating with 3 needle palms. On the East side I've got a small yaupon holly, two trachycarpus wagnerianus (with little zebra grass clumps still dormant in between them), and my larger birmingham sabal on the Southeast corner. I included some closer shots of the individual palms. All are probably happy to get in the ground after years in their pots.

I've known about this palm for years and drove by to check it out on my way to work today. It was planted as a few seeds pushed into the ground.. if I remember correctly.. 20+ years ago. Obviously at least 1 sprouted and grew into this. When it was younger I think the general concensus was is that its a filifera.. What do you think?? It almost looks filibusta now.. its in between 2 pine trees.. and faces west. Sorry for the poor picture quality..

Back in March, I ordered and planted three 5 gallon trachycarpus novas on the south side of my house. I planted them early in order to give them the most time possible to establish their roots before their first winter. They're each about 3.5' tall. I'm just wondering if I should provide them with any protection since this will be their first winter in the ground. I'm in Raleigh, NC, which is on the zone 7b side of zone 8a. Anyone have advice?

Cincinnati Palms 8

Heres some updates on some needle palms here in Cincinnati. The first two pictures is the needle palm planted at Mount Saint Joseph University in the year 2000. It has NEVER received ANY special protection. However, it was cut down by MISTAKE by landscapers in spring of 2019. Thankfully it is growing back with a vengeance! The third picture is a volunteer needle palm seedling several feet away from it! So there must be another somewhere close by! The 4th picture is the sole remaining needle palm at the far end of the parking lot. They for many years had many needle palms throughout their property in the open. For whatever reason they removed them this spring without rhyme…

Back in November of 2016, my fiancee and I embarked on a six hour road trip to McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in search of native Sabal minor. About 20 miles southeast of Idabel, there they were, growing in ditches, in pastures, in woods...they truly are weeds down there. Here are some pictures, enjoy!!

Hey! I’ve recently rescued a group of three cocos nucifera I found laying on the floor without any care at a market here in Mexico City. After I got them I got curious if there was any possibility of growing them given that the city is at 7,500 ft of elevation more less and I ran into some interesting cases in neighboring cities where they grow at basically this elevation with little trouble. Maybe the fact we are inside the tropics has cooperated! Does this mean it’ll grow here? the most interesting case in my opinion are this palms growing at 1960 m over the sea level in the neighboring city of a Queretaro, which is north of Mexico City and more prone to get cold f…

How to kill a palm without digging it up?

Hello PalmTalkers. I need to kill several chinese fan palms (livistona chinensis) without digging them up. How can I accomplish this? In the past, there has been advice on PalmTalk about drenching the growth point with kerosene/lighter fluid - e.g.: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/16797-phoenix-dactylifera-medjool/ However, I am reluctant to use kerosene because the trees are right against a wooden fence. I do not want to create a risk of fire. The reason I cannot dig them up is that these trees are attached to other livistona chinensis which I want to keep (sold to me as clustering palms, but turned out to be seeks planted together in the same p…

Here is my Sabal Minor McCurtain seedling and I'm wondering when can I expect to see split fronds. As you can see the newest spear looks like it will produce a split frond. There is a total of 5 compete leaves and one has actually popped off so there would have been six.

Trachy Fungus?
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

I noticed this weekend what I assume is fungus on two of my Trachy Fs. Oddly one of them (first picture) was potted during the winter, was brought into an unheated garage for 10F or below nights and left under cover if there was sleet or freezing rain in the forecast. It was planted about two weeks ago. The other (second picture) spent its third winter in the ground. Both funguses are on the spears (and in the second pic you can't see a second spear whose top is completely brown, not yet protruding). These Trachys are forty feet apart. I did fertilize them two weeks ago but I can't imagine that had any effect. I sprayed the first with a copper fungicide on Thursday…

So ... noticed this about 4 days ago. Palm was next to the kids trampoline. It was near 100 a week or so ago and the kids aimed the sprinkler at the trampoline to cool off. I noticed two fronds look folded up and upon further inspection and a good hard yank out came not one but two spears. Well it also soaked this palm for a couple hours resulting in spear pull . I soaked it in H2O2 and it bubbled like crazy. Wondering if I should just start surgery on this one.. I put a stick down the hole with a sharply park on it and marked a petiole but haven’t noticed movement. I soaked up all the old H2O2 so it would dry .... should I hold out on this one?

I've known about these plants in an empty field near a garden center in Boise for awhile now. Nothing mind blowing but still cool to see.. Looks like a few of them produced seed this year too. Bonus pics of some cannas that look to have naturalized and taken over the same area. Plants have been here at least 5 years or so, probably longer.

Bought a bunch of palms from FB earlier this month. One was a 4" pot of Beccariophoenix alfredii. The plan was to repackage it right away and ship it off to my daughter living just outside of Baton Rouge, La. The day the palms arrived from the Big Island I brought the little guy into the house and packed it up the next morning along w/a few zip bags of black cinder. Took it to UPS that morning. When it arrived in Baton Rouge it only contained the black cinder and a not from USDA that the plant was removed because of White Flys and something else I can't remember. BULL CRAP. There were no white flies on it or any of the other 16 palms. FB is certified to ship so I …
