Possible Most Northern East Coast CIDP plus tough OBX Phoenix Survivor

Most of us know that the most northern climate on the east coast for Canary Island Palms to grow long term is Charleston. some of the ones there are 50ft tall and 70+ years old. However CIDP are still seen on the coast north of there. Places like Myrtle beach and Ocean Isle Beach NC have a few trunked ones that have been there for at least 12 years (streetview) and pull through bad winters . I had the privilege of going to Cape Hatteras North Carolina last September and I was surprised to see some healthy CIDP around the Island. This one was behind the Grocery store in the Buxton part of Hatteras. The first 4 big ones are confirmed to have been planted over…

Medjool in Mobile?
by Manalto- 4 replies

In May, I put four date seeds in a pot that were left over from the end-of-the-semester pot-luck picnic I always have with my students. (I have a good percentage of students from the Middle East, who always bring the best food.) Three of the four seeds sprouted, the largest has two straps about 18" long. Today I planted the biggest one in a spot where I imagine (probably long after my demise) a stately date palm will stand and look fabulous. I was surprised at the length of the root. It's late December in Gulf-Coast 8B Alabama, meaning that we could be in for some chilly temperatures in January and February. (The three seedlings have already come through the high 20s (F) …

Afternoon everyone! I found some very tall, full-figured T. fortunei in Portland, OR when I was driving by recently. Well ok, I took the photos in the fall of 2019 so I'm a little late (my apologies). I've attached some photos and the google maps street-view link (which, arguably is slightly dated) here: https://goo.gl/maps/afhGzkTjNrYzEUPQ6 Can anyone guess the height of them? I would love to know. Its inspiring seeing palms this size this grow here. IMG_6999.HEIC IMG_7001.HEIC

My Needle Palm went from smaller fronds to big fronds over the summer, look at the size of them, and they'll get much bigger! I had to hold the camera way up to get the whole frond in the picture!

Odd Cocoid Hybrid

So I have this cocoid hybrid that's supposed to be a Buju or Jubu. It's been in the ground for 5 years or so, shady area, slow growth. But this bad boy is different. There are two odd characteristics that suggest Syagrus blood. Check it out. From a distance, it just looks like a robust Butia. On closer inspection all the fronds show plumosity and the fine point armament of a some mules. The pinnae are actually a little wider like Jub. It's fascinating. It lost its spear with the 8F low this winter, but fairly unharmed otherwise. What do y'all think? My best guess is Buju X Syagrus.

NW Louisiana Butia
by John Derek- 1 reply

Today while out and about I found these around 12 foot tall Butias. These are probably the largest I have found locally. They are in front of a closed down Sonic drive in. I collected 56 plants from around the base of it. We had an 18 degree night already over late fall, but these girls are obviously tough as nails.

Hey everyone i have sowed these 3 species. Actually and a bunch of fortunei. But the other 3 the info isn’t as available There in baggies. Should they be outside in the shade so they get cool nights and warm days or in the house at room temperature? I’ve had them on some bottom heat for a week but think maybe that is wrong for these. Also chime in on fortunei I had them in my palm room but it is always 77 to 80f so today I put them outside in the shade. Too date have germinated everything g pretty much but a trachycarpus of any kind. Thanks everyone.

I recently saw this palm on Belews Lake, NC while fishing. It's pretty tall (the picture doesn't do it justice) and looks like it's been there for quite a while. I figured it was a trachycarpus fortunei but I may be wrong.

Rotting Queen Palms
by HtownPalms- 1 follower

I have 4 Queen Palms planted in front of my house. The other day I noticed that 2 of them were rotting in the trunk. Other than the trunk rot they look really healthy. I just bought the house 4 months ago so I don't know much about these particular palms. From what I can tell all the other palms in my neighborhood look very healthy. What could be causing this? Everything missing from the trunk is what I very easily pulled off by hand once I noticed the soft part on the tree. I'm not worried about saving the tree. I think they are too close to the house anyway. I just want to know if it is something that I need to worry about spreading to my other palms? Can I plant a new …

Temperature inside windmill protection box
by Tom Ace- 4 replies
Hi Folks, With guidance from users of this forum and some videos I have seen, I have prepared my 4' windmill for its first winter in the ground in zone 6B Connecticut. Current setup was made using stuff I had already - scrap lumber, some 1" R5 rigid foam insulation on 3 sides, and a tarp covering the 4th side for now. There are openings on the bottom of the box for air to get in, and the tarp is old and worn out so it has some holes for ventilation too. c9 lights inside with a thermocube ( I left 12 lights on the strand at 7 watts each). I'm curious about the temperature inside the box. My sensorpush is showing frequent temperature swings in between 35 an…

I have had this palm in New England for years outside during the summer and inside during the winter and after having it outside when it was really wet. It seemed to have damaged it. It looks to be getting better but really slowly. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to make it get better faster. In the next week or so, I am going to bring it to FL(10b) and was wondering if I should keep it outside or inside.

Central OK update
by Dave_OK- 19 replies

Quick update from my garden in Central Oklahoma. My Sabal minors continue to thrive and my largest minor gets bigger each summer. It produced three large seed stalks this year. I believe this is a "Louisiana" variety, but I'm not 100% certain as I bought it nearly 10 years ago at a local nursery. I've potted up numerous seedlings to give to friends and transplanted to other areas of the garden. It's quite a plant! My Windmill Palm is in a very protected micro climate and you can see it's growth rate below. I've wrapped it up anytime we see temps drop below 10 or so, which is fairly rare, maybe once or twice a winter. Other than that, I just pile up leaves around it a…
