Sabal Birmingham growth thread 1 2

Picked up a couple of 3yr old Sabal Birminghams and put one in the ground yesterday. Looking fordward to the slow progress on this one, but also great cold tolerance! I'm using this as a progress thread over time. I've got two others that went into 1G pots in the event some of the other palms around my yard don't put out new growth this year from the freeze.. Looking forward to growing this one! Anyone already growing one of these? Thoughts and experiences with them thus far?

Sabal Minor Recovery - June to October
by PalmTreesAreCoolYes- 0 replies

In the top photo, it was newly transplanted and looked sad but now it looks good in October. It looked pretty bad in it's old spot too probably about the same as the top photo. I think it was drying out in it's old spot close to the house foundation. So I think most of it's sulking was from it's old spot but also a little from the transplant. It definitely likes it's new spot better in the woods where it can soak up rain. tt

Hi guys I’m fairly new to tropical gardening started this year in may and I have fallen head first into things and have learnt an awful lot already . I've already got 2 x Phoenix canariensis - 5x Washingtonia robustas and a trachycarpus fortunei which are doing really well but I want to branch out abit and see what’s possible to grow in my area! I live in the coastal village of Braunton in North Devon - south west England zone 9b and I’m around 10 meters above sea level . I'm wondering if anyone has tried to grow syagrus romanzoffiana santa catarina (supposedly hardy queen palm ) and Phoenix sylvestris (silver date palm) I’m the south of England or even Engl…

Sabal Mexicana survived 0F

It looks like my Sabal Mexicana survived 0F. The DFW area. Night temperatures were 10, 5, and 0F. Today I did the surgery and I cut off 2-3 ft from the top. Finally I reached healthy and firm tissue. You can see lines of young fronds. Now we need hot days and warm nights for it to start growing. S.

So I noticed this mutt of a palm today had a dead spear . I’ve had no luck with just H2O in these situations. I did pour some down the hole and it fizzed. I pulled 3 spears out. Then decided to cut into it. @Laaz is well versed in this so hoping you can chime in. Should I go deeper?

Newly planted Bismarck Palm

Hi all, I planted a 30 gallon Bismarck palm in my front yard a week ago. Some of the fonds are turning brown. What can this be a sign of? I have read that the tree needs a lot of water the first week, and that’s what I’ve been doing. Every day about 30 gallons. Any input would be great! thanks

I've heard of rumors of Silver Queens making it through the teens for several hours. Their USDA Hardiness zone is 8b which is the same as Myrtle Beach. So are they really THAT hardy?

What Survived Texas Worst Winter in 30 Years Update
by Collectorpalms- 5 replies
Several palms that initially survived to see spring died by fall. Most notably almost every Washingtonia Filifera and Brahea Armara… my very tall Phoenix Sylvestris. I have a map view of the before, and I circled what survived that was over 20FT tall. They were 2 Canaries, 1 Washingtonia Filifera, 1 Washingtonia Hybrid, 1 Sabal Palmetto, 1 Sabal Mexicana. Less than 2 dozen smaller palms survived out of a total collection of over 100.

Is it bad to plant bamboo by windmill palm tree?
by PalmTreesAreCoolYes- 18 replies

I've had a phylostachys vivax Chinese Timber Bamboo planted behind my house for a few years. I thought the south side of my house would provide a nice shield from northern winds in my 6b/7a climate. Recently I planted a windmill palm tree and I want to plant several more cold hardy palms in this area. My question is will the bamboo basically suck up all the water and nutrients and kill any palm trees around it? It is a runner bamboo. I am barely within it's growing zone and so far it hasn't been much of a runner only putting out 1 or 2 culms per year and also it's shaded. We get ample rainfall like 56 inches per year but recent years we have gotten more like 80 inches. Al…

Dark Green Fronds
by BeyondTheGarden- 5 replies

I planted this Trachy earlier this summer, the fronds have turned very dark green. The Mahonia x media next to it has exhibited the same thing. Thus is under the canopy of some big Doug firs, and was getting watered daily by a lawn sprinkler (how I water the entire garden). I'm assuming it's a nutrient deficiency, the soil here seems rather void of organic material. If that's the case, I also assume it's too late in the year to apply fertilizer?

Cycas guizhouensis in Myrtle Beach?
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

I know I've been making a lot of threads about how well certain plants would do in Myrtle Beach... This one is a little bit different. I want to try something that isn't a palm but looks like one here in Myrtle Beach. Yes, I know about the Cycas revoluta, they are just everywhere here. I realize that Cycas guizhouensis is cold hardy to 8b which "technically" means I could do it, but I know that isn't always the case. Since there isn't that much information about this Cycad, it is hard for me to get any information about its true climate, not just USDA hardiness zones. So does anyone know if it could live in this type of climate? If it can't, is there any other Cycads that…

Winter protection for Pindo Palm in 7b
by knikfar- 13 replies

This will be my pindo palm's first winter in the ground. I've planted it in, what I think is, a nice microclimate. It's about 10' away from the east wall of my house, 5' away from the west wall of my greenhouse and about 4' away from the south side of a large willow oak. The oak is at least 50' tall but I've had the lower canopy trimmed up to allow sunlight at the base. It'll get full sunshine from the early morning until early afternoon in the winter. That being said, I'm in Raleigh, NC, zone 7b. I'm planning to have to protect my pindo a few nights every winter. There will definitely be some winters, like the past two, where I won't but I can't count on that. So I'm won…
