Cactus, Palm and Citrus Potting Mix

I've seen a bag of of this stuff (by Miracle-Gro) at the big box stores and been tempted to try it on young palms and even citrus. I asked a friend of mine about it and he said he'd tried it before but didn't like it because he thought it dries out too readily. Thoughts on this?

La Niña Officially Forecasted (Again)

Hey All, I know this is technically climate and weather but it definitely is something zone pushers pay attention to! https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/7902196002 First official prediction is another La Niña this fall/winter. Our low in central Ohio last winter was 5F and 2 weeks below freezing. The precipitation La Niña brings to the Midwest is something I’m not looking forward to. I may have to protect all of the palms with my burlap/clear tarp structure to keep moisture at bay for them. Picture of my favorite minor to ward off any thoughts of cold associated with this post lol

Is Brahea armata hardy for the Austin, TX area? It's zone 8b. If not, do you know of any other blue or silvery palm that grows there? Thanks.

Juvenile Trachycarpus wagnerianus at 50°N 1 2 3

I planted a juvenile 4 years old Trachycarpus wagnerianus, which I had grown up from seed in 2003, on 28 April 2007 outdoors in Heidelberg/Germany at 49.4°N. The following pics document the very limited growth and its struggle with long and hard freezes. Here are the photos of the first 4 years outdoors from 2007 to 2011. (1) first day in the ground (2007-04-28) (2) first winter outdoors (2008-02-03) (3) after the 3rd winter (2010-03-12) (4) the 4th summer (2010-07-19) (5) the 4th winter (2011-01-01) (6) the 5th summer outdoors (2011-08-20)

Water your minors… Then do it again!

I think most already know this on here… But I just want to confirm that my minors LOVE water. We have had some consistent heat (90+) in Ohio the last week so I watered my palms every morning, then we had tons of rain yesterday and today and this frond has 100% opened more in the last week because of it.

I am thinking about buying a male/female pair of Phoenix dactylifera for my yard near Austin. But will our cold winters keep them from thriving enough to bear fruit? Would another date palm do better? Or do I need to forget about growing dates?

A Cycad for South Central Texas

Good morning Palmtalk Friends, I've been tracking this gorgeous cycad in the King William area of San Antonio for the past few years and was curious how it would do following the complete defoliation that occurred in this past winter’s freeze. Yesterday I got the opportunity to walk by for the first time in a month and was happy to see that it had completely regrown its fronds. I’m not sure why they are not more available in the trade in this area, they are drop-dead gorgeous and much more interesting looking, in my opinion, than the ubiquitous Cycad revoluta. Here is Dioon edule in all its glory:

Rhapsis Help

Yesterday, I bought a Rhapsis from a local nursery for $20. He has several healthy plants, but he wants more than I’m willing to pay. Does anyone have any advice on getting this thing healthy looking again? He had it in full sun, and I’m not positive it received enough water. I added some liquid copper Fungicide to the stalks that the spear pulled to try revive any potential life that remains in them. You can see where some of the stalks are starting to push new growth. The roots were exposed, so I covered them with potting soil. I also put it in a shady spot, and sprinkled some slow release fertilizer on it. I believe it’s Scott’s 8-6-8 Palm Fertilizer with nutrie…

Palms for Zone 9a Japan
by RuJPN- 8 replies

Hello Palmtalk! New member here living in Japan and I need some input on palm selection. I'm not too familiar with USDA zones, but from what I understand I'm technically in zone 9a. A little about the climate; Last time we had a record low under 20F was in 1985 when we had 19F. The coldest ever recorded temperature was in 1919 when we hit 11F, and 13F in 1954, so I think those days might be behind us. Hopefully. As I said it's zone 9a (if I understand correctly) but it's not a warm 9a, during last years winter which was fairly typical we had 11 nights with freezing temperatures in december, 19 in january and 8 in february. The freezes are typically in the lo…

New to Palmtalk
by Saltydog- 13 replies

I planted a Brazoriensis, Trachycarpus Takil and S. Minor here on the lower Eastern Shore of MD (Salisbury—about 20 miles inland from Ocean City). They’ve been through two winters thus far with nighttime lows bottoming at 15 degrees and all daytime temps above freezing. They were purchased from a grower in Pungo, VA (near Virginia Beach) and were about 2-gal. size when planted. So far-so good with no winter freeze damage whatsoever. This is a zone 7B with mostly mild winters but the potential for an occasional cold winter remains. Winterization has been limited to piling up pine shats around the bases and wrapping the center spears with burlap on a couple of cold nights.…

Mercer Botanical Garden, good and bad
by necturus- 9 replies
Visited Mercer Botanical Garden today. It doesn't look as bad as March, mostly because the tuberous plants have come back. However, it's now clear a ton of palms and trees died. Probably only a quarter of the mules show signs of life. They have already cut down some big stuff. Most Livistona look dead. Rest in peace, bunya bunya and hoop pine. People are amazed that palms can get tall in marginal zone and then die in a bad free, but these pines were gigantic. Best looking palms are the Sabals and Brahea armata and clara. The Braheas are weird because they've never looked very good before. There's another Brahea that's barely hanging on to life and has trunk damage. …

Sabal blackburniana odd spiral growth
by LivistonaFan- 4 replies
I bought this nice Sabal blackburniana online and was quite surprised when I discovered that there are three growing points on the same plant. I don't believe that these are three different plants grown from seed in the same pot. It rather seems like the growth point has been damaged at some time and now two additional spiral growth points emerged. But that's just a guess. What do you think?

Here is damage from 15F (~-9C) on my largest W. filifera... Several snow events less than 2 inches each AND several nights below 20F. The emerging fronds that haven't opened yet appear ok.. but if there is any damage there it might show up later.
