Saw this label at a big box store. Is this just the result of them not having a clue, or is it possible it is actually a hybrid of some sort. If so, why not list both species in the cross (like fortunei x wagnerianus)? The plants may have had stiffer leaflets than windmills of the same size I have bought in the past, or I may have just wanted to think that. Either way I added one more Trachy to the mix in my yard. the "Trachycarpus x fortunei"

Cycas pectinata
by ESVA- 6 replies
Wondering if anybody has tried Cycas pectinata far outside its natural cold hardiness zone. I've got 4 plants that I raised from seed (think I bought a pack of 5 seeds and 4 survived). Now they're around 6-inch caudex size and have outgrown indoor areas. Usually I put them outside for the summer and drag them back indoors for the winter with the first frost and winter them on an unheated enclosed porch which usually stays around 30-40F (which is good for inducing clivias to flower) but temp;s can go down to 20F if teens or single digits outside. Usually the leaves get burned off / turn brown, but once temps warm up I put the cycads back outside. cut off the old ragged lea…

Hi I have always wondered why do landscapers/homeowners in Virginia not grow hardy palms like trachycarpus fortunei or sabal minors and needles maybey even filibustas and palmettos with protection. I know one of my neighbors grow bananas(I think thats what it is) and elephant ears. another has palms in pots. Thanks.

Newly defibered Trachy trunk :
by WSimpson- 2 replies

I could clean up this Trachy trunk a little more but all the fiber I have just pulled off was without using any tools ; I just pulled it off by hand . I pulled on it till it became harder to pull off . It still has more dead petiole bases so I may continue defibering higher up using sharp hand clippers . Here's what I did in about 10 minutes by hand : Untitled by william simpson, on Flickr Here's my Washy trunk where you can see its clear trunk also only pulled off by hand over the years : Untitled by william simpson, on Flickr Overview of both ( anybody see the dog ? : Untitled by william simpson, on Flickr

Washingtonia in zone 7a with just wrapping?
by siege2050- 24 replies
- 3.5k views
I originally started some Washingtonia Filibusta seeds to grow in containers (Still waiting on Filifera to germinate). But after seeing how fast they are growing for me, and looking around the web, is it possible to protect a Washingtonia with just wrapping the trunks heavily in a zone 7a down to 0F? I am not too crazy about making mini greenhouses so would prefer to wrap. If so what kind of wrapping, would heat tape be necessary on the coldest nights with a thermostat? Also if I remove all the fronds, will new ones grow back in time to make the palm look okay each year? What is the cold hardiness for Filibusta as compared to Robusta, and Filifera and is it increased a lo…

Newest palm from indoor box store. This will be the last one for this year going in the ground. I’m guessing I could get two clumps out of it. Not root bound at all. All planted and was very easy since the roots where not that full or deep. Was able to make, two clumps. Same palm clump different angle. Second clump. Should be hardy to 15F with protection, but the taller leaves will slowly die off in the next few years. New leaves will be much more shorter, wider, stronger than this greenhouse grow one, but with only 3 hours of sunlight I may be dreaming.….below 15F it curtains!

Will green sabal birmingham seeds sprout?
by knikfar- 2 followers

Hi all, I collected a bunch of sabal birmingham seeds yesterday. They are all green but were already falling off the tree and the ones I pulled came off with almost no resistence. They're soaking in water now. About half sank to the bottom and the other half are floating at the top. Is there any chance these might germinate or should I throw the bunch out and try again next month when the seeds are black, assuming there are any left.

McCurtain Slow Grower

Update On the McCurtain...the leaf I thought might be a more mature frond is another two leaf strap...at 62, I need it to grow faster but I think I’ll chalk this one up as a lesson in patience. It’s not going to be what it’s not...but it’s a good candidate for my zone....
