I have searched the forums for bonetti, but haven't found much. I want to try zone pushing the most cold hardy Butia - which seems to be bonetti. On the greater web, I find one shop in Brittany, France that says that they will notify me if they get any in: Butia bonetti (achat-vente-palmiers.com)

Princeps hardiness ?
by WSimpson- 5 replies

I thought Trachy princepses were as hardy as regular Fortunei but I don't remember my Princeps having what looks like winter damage on it in past winters . The newest spears look fine but 2 fronds and 1 spear has damage . My lowest low last winter was 16F and after that I had 5 lows in the lower 20'sF -25F . A mild winter for here . How hardy are they ? Thanks

I lost everything in the Texas freeze, save for some pups on one of my chamaerops humilis var. cerifera that started pushing green from right near the ground. There was one main trunk which was rotted, smelly, and pulling fronds. In preparation for my replacement palms coming in, I dug it up today and moved it to a new spot in the yard. When I cut away at the old main trunk, I started halfway down and was surprised to see all clean white tissue, which was firm. I split the top part I had removed in half and it was that way up a bit further, where there was a divot in the center that was mushy and was clearly where the fronds were pulling from. Not having ever seen…

In my location, In east Tennessee, where would be the best spot to plant a needle palm? In zone 6b/7a. It rarely drops below zero in a winter within the last 10 or so years. We have moderately hot summers. Cold but not frigid winters. Precipitation is 56 inches per year. 13 inches of snow. I know it needs some amount of sun but my yard is limited to mostly shade but there are some small spots with more sun but they are a bit exposed out in the open. I don't know if it would get enough heat in the shady spots but I also don't want it to be out in the open.

Small Sabal with papery ligules

I have a young palm in front of my house that was labeled "Sabal texana" when I bought it (at Smithfield Gardens in Suffolk, VA?) a few years ago. I assumed that it would turn out to be a 'Brazoriensis." It has (slowly) developed papery legumes, similar to Sabal causiarum. It is growing among bamboo roots and is holding its own. Hardiness at this young age is similar to S palmetto. Any guesses as to which Sabal this really is?

Tips for Sabal "Louisiana"

I potted these sabals about a month ago and they don't seem to be doing too well. I ordered all three of them online from a palm nursery in Florida and they did arrive with a few wilting/discolored fronds. What worries me is that there has been little to no improvement in their condition since. I water them once every 1-2 days, make sure they get plenty of sun, and I potted them in well draining, palm specific soil. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but any tips would be greatly appreciated. (BTW: I plan to overwinter them inside in pots and then plant them in the ground next spring if they're still alive) Here's a few pictures of them:

Serenoa Repens in the Pacific Northwest
by Chester B- 8 replies

I'm not sure if anyone has tried Serenoa repens "silver saw palmetto" in the Pacific Northwest, so I thought I would share my experiences so far. I think it was 2 years ago (possibly 3) I bought 3 strap leaf seedlings from Mail Order Natives along with some needle palms. I wasn't sure what to do with them or what sort of care they needed at the time so planted where I had space. Two were placed in a very hot dry area and the third in a more shady wetter spot. Year one they didn't get any care and I hardly even watered which I think may have slowed them down. Very little growth occurred. Last year I started to water them more frequently and slowly they grew. I think…

A flower appears? My first time.
by ColdBonsai- 3 replies

It's still kinda hard to see, but is this a flower spike developing on my needle palm? The other side of the trunk has one as well. The plant just had its second winter in the ground. I was under the impression they don't flower until they're a bit older, but I have no experience.

Where is This Windmill???
by Alex High- 0 replies

Hello everyone It's been a while since I've posted but a couple of weeks ago I saw a photo of a huge windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) in front of an apartment building in D.C., and since then I have been obsessed with trying to find it. The photo was definitely taken in D.C., I can tell by the buildings, and it is likely in or near Capitol Hill because the townhouses on the left-hand side of the building are the kind that are mostly found either in Georgetown or Capitol Hill, and the apartment building itself is definitely not in Georgetown. I have searched on Google Maps but to no avail, there are just too many apartment buildings that look like it. I will cont…

Protecting from cold: hand warmers
by smatofu- 7 replies
Hi, here is my idea that I want to patent (kidding): using hand warmers to protect palms from cold. A few hand warmers + a blanket should work very well. Big advantages: it doesn't depend on electric power, no thermostats, no extension cords; hand warmers never overheat. Cost: on amazon, $20/50 count. Well worth it if you are protecting a few thousands palm investment. A sample item on amazon: Tundras Hot Hand Warmers 11 Hours Long Lasting - 40 Count - Natural Odorless Safe Single Use Air Activated Heat Packs for Hands, Toes and Body - Up to 11 Hours of Heat S.

Hi, I'm considering whether or not to purchase a Mule. One consideration is trunk size. I see some of them are "fatties" like the ones shown here (about 1/5 of the way down the thread) and then there are more slender trunk Mules like many shown in this thread. Is this variation just genetics, like maybe the slender ones are more "Queen-heavy" in their genetics? Any way to ensure I can be growing one of the more slender varieties? Thanks

Hey everyone, I was curious if this was an old inflorescence on the way out or if this is how the new ones start? The brown tips make me think old but I’ve never had a flowering minor. Thanks! Nate

Mule palm BxS has a lot of queen in it and the lower part of the trunk is really thickening up. Makes me want to try a real queen palm in this area. lol. So far it has been fairly hardy for me with very little damage. Get around 5-6 hrs of sunshine. What I like about this one is the droopy leaves.

Street View swipe. I know the winters may be getting warmer but... If you're going to plant palms for the season, you might as well go for broke. Just skip the Sabals entirely.

Windmill problem
by EastCanadaTropicals- 27 replies

Ok, so when I first uncovered my windmill, it looked fine. It was raining alot when I uncovered it in April, and I thought windmills liked wet weather so I left it. But the spear and emrging frond began to look worse and worse after every rainstorm. The emerging leave and spear are fully browned, but they arent completely pulling off. What can I do to help? Is it still alive? Should I get an older palm next time? No other leaf on the windmill looks that bad, but the other leaves have some winter damage. Any advice? If it's dead, next time, ill plant the largest sabal minor I can find, place it on a south facing wall, and protect the leaves every year.

Pindo Palm shedding it's boots
by Ponds & Palms- 12 replies

My brother in law has a pindo palm he got about 3 years ago from a local dealer in North Carolina so we don't know how old the palm is. We live in zone 7b and for the most part the tree has been fine. He wraps the trunk and bottom fronds in burlap in the winter to keep it warm and with a pretty mild winter this past year all the fronds were still green unwrapping it ! Now it appears that the bottom boots are falling off (see pictures) the trunk exposed is rock hard so it doesn't seem rotten, so what is going on? There are no signs of bugs and the center spear has put out about 4 new fronds this summer.

Landscaping my pool area and looking for two palm trees about 6' tall to plant. I like the type with a smooth trunk. I am not very familiar with palm trees. I just planted two Pinda Palms and want something taller behind them. Any suggestions? Also advice on soil amendments would be helpful. I live in Section 8A. Thank you in advance and may God bless us all...
